His and Her Circumstances

I fell in love with this anime from the first episode I saw! It's funny, thought-provoking, dramatic, and just overall great! The relationship between the two main characters is just so interesting to watch develop!

It has the random aura of FLCL and the complexity of Evangelion -- It could have something to do with the fact that is was created by Studio Gainax and directed by Hideaki Anno! I only got three DVD's, but you better believe that I will finish this series out come heck or high water! DATTEBAYO!!

It would have been great if they didn't start cutting corners and started making the art look junky!

When I say this about Kare Kano. I don't mean that it turn from great to bad. I still think its good, but from where it started out great. Ended up just being good after a few problems.

Fun fact: they played one music piece from Eva in the first ep, but it was played very softly.

I disagree with you there, winger. The show tried to be avant garde in the end, which I can see would be a turn off for many, but I don't think that necessarily translate to a lack of production value. Of course, I guess you could still say it looks junky.

The show, like many anime, turns more serious to the end, but I was pleased with it through out. There was only one thing I did not appreciate, and it is very common to modern romantic stories involving teenagers and seems to be unfortunately mirrored in our society.

(This may be a bit of a spoiler, so I will tag it, although I don’t think I give away any plot elements)
The teens, of course, take their romances way too seriously. As if the person you choose to date now at 16 should be considered based on what kind of life-long mate he/she could be. Maybe I’m off base here (read: old-fashioned), but does dating have to be so serious? Is everyone you date a potential mate? Ah, well, I digress. This seriousness is fitting to the circumstances of the story, so it fits better here then in most stories, but it does lead to the scene that ruined the series for a few on this site.
Yeah, I was really liking the anime until:
Right around the 4th DVD, they slept together. I loved the show when it was more innocent than that. I don't like it when they become just like every other teenage drama out there.
Just too serious. I liked the manga, but only got to book 5. The money to buy manga really adds up after a while. (I rent my anime from Netflix, so the cost is minimal.)

I might still finish watching the anime - IF Netflix ever gets the rest of it. (They don't have disc 5.)

So far, I've only gotten up to the 3rd DVD, and I hope to finish off my collection by next week! From what I've heard, I'm either in for a big let down, or a pretty cool conclusion...

I mean, if I can survive Neon Gensis ____________ (insert forbidden anime name here) freaky and confusing ending (Both of 'em!) then I can handle Kare Kano!

Speaking of Eva refrences, according to Wikipedia, during one episode, you can actually see flash pics of the main characters of NGE. It's really quick, so you'll have to use frame-by-frame, but when I saw it, I was like "WHOA! I see 'em!"

This is probably one of the most stolen videos on Netflix... Or, at least, that's what I'm guessing because one by one the discs have gone to "very long wait" and then to "Saved" list... *cries* Oh well, there's always youtube...

Yup, that's exactly why I haven't finished the series yet... XD
THere IS always YouTube, but I hate hate HATE watching stuff on my computer. Although thanks to the other post about the Tokyo Pop Rocks podcast of Jpop, that same site has some fansubs too, like NANA, Aishiteruze Baby, King of Fighters: Another Day and Ouran High School Host Club. They have some live action and music videos too. I started watching the live action NANA movie yesterday. But again, I hate sitting at my computer watching stuff, I'd rather watch it sprawled out on the couch. XD

Back on subject-- my favorite scene in this anime is when they're all playing Uno! It's so suprising and so unexpected! Even funnier is listening to it with the Japanese audio track on! I didn't know that the phrase "Draw Four!" is the same in Japanese as it is in english!

One wonders if they had to get permission to use the card game "Uno" in an anime?

BUMP! I'm not letting my thread die!

Anyway, I just finished the entire collection, and I must say, I have a lot of mixed opinions on the ending--it's kinda like FLCL and NGE's original ending, open and up in the air, but there IS an ending, and if you know what to look for, it's a pretty clear ending.

The one thing I did have a problem with was:
The parts of the show that were done in manga frames with the two narrators--it was cool at first, but it got annoying after a while.
I saw the infamous 4th DVD Episode that dyzzispell was talking about--
Right around the 4th DVD, they slept together. I loved the show when it was more innocent than that. I don't like it when they become just like every other teenage drama out there.
I must say, it was very tastefully done and not as bad as I really thought it was going to be. Quite beautiful in my honest opinion.

Sooooooo, that being said, on the African American Anime Grading Scale, I'll have to give Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances) an A!

I really loved the anime..despite the flaws that it had... I had only seen the first two episodes when I found the fourth dvd on sale for only 5 bucks and bought it. With the help of epi summaries... I made it to disc four...only to find what everyone is worried about..

I agree it was tastefully done, and while I don't condone what happened my best friends are involved in those sorts of things and I haven't come out scathed...

However the one episode that caused my eyebrow to raise/really made me laugh was episode 19
STICK PUPPETS?! PAPER PUPPETS?! I thought it was a total joke at first..but the entire episode!!?!
I jsut find it funn that after the infamous episode 17...
their relationship kinda dwindled....it was a bit odd...to see that.. lol
Episode 17: "His Return" was when Arima first came home after being gone all summer. I think the episode you're talking about is Episode 18: "Progress" --
True, they were too young to really take it to THAT level, but all can agree that the whole episode and that scene especially was done very beautifully. And the lines Yukino delivers whilie they were in the rain (Before they start kissing) really speak to the audience, showing them that they both love each other.
Heh. It was around this time when, like most projects Hideaki Anno works on, the budget was running out, so they had to save any way they can! If you notice during that episode, they actually have a video camera focused on a TV screen playing the cafe scene with Yukino, Tsubasa, etc...

Yes, since they acquired the rights to show it on TV and will start airing it in January.

3 DVD collection?

Unless they reformatted how the DVD's are laid out, the original DVD's are spread over 5 DVD's...how you pulled THAT off is beyond me!

They didn't. The new thinpack is the 5 dvd set.

The very first box set had 5 dvds in it as well.
