So, the first subbed ep of Death Note just came out. What's your impression?

I thought it was interesting... they're sticking to the plot well (it would be hard to deviate from the manga plot without screwing it up). I like Light's voice for the most part.. his giggling is slightly annoying, but otherwise I think they casted him spot on.

I still don't think this will make a very good anime. DN is a very dialogue based manga and long extended dialogue in anime can get very boring very fast. There also tends to be alot of eye shots, which is a pet peeve of mine when watching anime. It screams low budget and I don't find it very tasteful. Unfortunately, DN already has lots of eye shots and still screens. *sigh*

Still, it's fun to see everyone in action. I'm interested in how Kappei Yamaguchi is going to do L. It might be weird for me cause I'm so used to him as Inuyasha, but he's such a good voice actor that I know he'll pull it off.

I've seen part of this raw. I thought the animation and background music was great. But that's all I can really say about it until I can see the whole thing subbed. ._.

I did like the music! It's very nice and I'll have to get the soundtrack =]

I have the same reservations as you, kneko, I don't see how this anime is going to work given that the manga is all about dialogue and writing stuff. Watching an anime of a person sitting down writing sounds boring to me, but...that's assuming the storyline is going to be the same as the manga, which it might not.

Well, at least since the manga is over, there won't be crappy filler eps.

I think the success of this anime will depend on its voice acting, due to its dialogue-heavy and psychological nature. However, the source material rocks [with the exception of a certain event in vol. 7 <_<], so they have good stuff to work with.

If I remember correctly there are 11 volumes of the manga. Though I may be wrong on the exact number it's pretty darn close.

The manga ended at Volume 12.

I didn't realize this was out already, though I should have known with people discussing the first episode of D. Gray-man. Perhaps I'll have to find a sample of this online, as I'm sure it's out there. Many of the reservations mentioned here I also share, though I hope that due to the lack of movement the anime will have stellar animation/art.

At least, we can hope not. Companies also have filler in order to lengthen a series and earn more money, after all.

i beat death note'll only go up to like episode 26.

It's going to be 37 episodes, and the manga has 108 chapters, so with 3 chapters per episode (as is common when weekly-manga is adapted into anime), that fills 36 episodes, and I assume we'll have a recap episode for the remaining episode.

I wish it was 39, though, so we can have two filler episodes of absolute randomness.

But I don't see it getting boring. Not all anime is driven by people punching each other in the throats.

I think it'll be pretty good. Monster is VERY dialogue driven as Death Note is. The Monster anime is also a great sucess.

So I think it'll pull off well.

I agree to the fullest extent. I perfer drama over action. Action is good you see, but good dialogue keeps me going. I like good dialogue.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. My only issue is the opener and ending. It feels like it's some big "action anime" with the fast paced music. But that's forgivable

Amazing "cinematography", amazing animation, music, and sound. I absolutely loved the camera angles. And I loved the part with the latin music and it shows all the people dying.

Seems like that's the general opinion. I was really hoping for Dani California, like the movie. It's so completely random and has nothing to do with Death Note, yet it fits so well.

When I referred to it not working well as an anime I was merely referring to the long dialogue. I thought that Naruto had the same problem transitioning from manga to anime. What I could read quickly in the manga dragged on FOREVER in the fighting scene monologues, becoming merely annoying. I'm all for drama and intrigue, much more so than action anime.

I half enjoyed the killing scene, and half thought it came off a little cheesy. Light waving his pen around like a sword just didn't seem like Light. Though, as I mentioned, I LOVED the music. So pretty...

I also liked the opening and ending. Didn't think it sounded like an action anime at all... The series, despite being dialogue based, is a very intense series. =]

Edit: I just noticed that I've been sounding very cynical about this... I really did like the episode! It's so cool to see everything in action and color. Plus they did a great job with the camera angles and the art style. I love how the style looks similiar to the manga. The movement isn't top notch, but I've been spoiled by Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, so I'm a little biased <.<;;

i guess i'll watch this anime during my SPARE time. but i wasn't really into the manga. mainly because the main character sorta ticked me off with his "cleansing the world" attitude.

Ditto.
It appears they are trying to "make up" for the lack of action, with animation and cinematography.
Consider me impressed.

Light is actually the antagonist, not the protagonist. That is why I love this series so much. You don't often get shows that follow the antagonist.

Or for that matter, give you any decision as to who the antagonist is. Some people might argue that the antagonist is L... I love the series for all the questions is brings up. It's much deeper than many anime/manga out there.

In my mind, "protagonist" has no moral connotation, and that as the main character Light is by definition the protagonist. Thus I do feel that L is the antagonist.

However, that is a technical argument. I agree with you in principle. Part of what makes Death Note interesting is that the main character is evil. If it started with L and had the same plot, it wouldn't be quite the same.

Here's hoping it's translated soon... and that it does well enough so that we get the movie over here, too.

yeah. he's the type of character you start off rooting for at the beginning but slowly begin to hope that he gets caught. the story's good in portraying how light slowly becomes more and more insane and caught up in his goal. but it's still jacked up how he takes advantage of people and kills innocent people.

Really? I think the author made him so creepy and evil, it was hard to root for him.

Heh. This topic again. It seems to come up in every discussion of Death Note (though legitimately) and I always end up saying similar things. But I hope it will benefit someone to repeat it once more.

To be honest, Light never seemed very creepy to me (though he does manage some serious evilness later on). However, what made me care about the series enough to read beyond the first chapter was that it casts the villain as the protagonist. Yet time and time again I see people who seem to approve of Light's original plan and think that he fell from his mission (not that I'm implying anyone has said that in the current discussion). That strikes me as an odd sense of morality, especially coming from a Christian.

I think it needs to be addressed that "Protagonist" does NOT always mean "good guy". It defines the character that is attempting to acheieve a goal (Light wanting to kill people off). An "Antagnonist" is someone who is attempting to stop the Protagnist. (As in L trying to stop Light)

It's just that most stories and works of fiction have the protagonist a good guy, thus why we assume protagonist means a good guy.

With all the talk of the series, I decided to start BTing the first 2 eps... yeah this site always seems to talk about a show long enough to get me to watch it^^ Happened with AIR... Full Moon... now Death Note.

Finally got around to watch episode 1 and my oppions are.......

Pros:
They did a good job following the manga
The scene of with the operatic music and criminals dying..was done perfectly

Cons:
Opener as mentioned was way to upbeat for the series.

Final thoughts: I can't wait to see more and i think they are gonna stretch the series to at least 50 eps see the length of the Manga. Then again they put 7 vols (so far) of hellsing into 13 eps of anime

I believe they are planning it to be around 37 episodes.
