CAA: Christian Anime Alliance

I'm kinda bored now (those last couple weeks before school starts) and was thinking I would like to create a flowchart of Anime Genres, before I actually get started I need to figure out what all the genres are, and how they all interact.
So if you all would not mind helping me out with this, I'd appreciate it (even if this is a kind of pointless task)

What I got so far is of course all Anime is split into Shonen and Shoujo, from there Shonen splits into Action and I think the term you guys use is Psychological thrillers? And Shoujo splits into Romance, and comedies. Action of course splits into like the Martial Arts stuff, Giant Robots, Space Ships, Gunslinging.

But I have no idea where to place stuff like xxxHolic, or cardcaptors, so if anyone could help me out with any corrections, or further sub-genres, and there is no reason to tell me this is stupid or pointless, I already know that, if any of you would like a copy of my chart when I'm done just let me know, thanks in advance for the help.

Psychological thrillers splits into mystery, drama, and horror. And Action can also split into adventure. Anyways, both xxxHolic and cardcaptors would definitely be in fantasy/??? and i think fantasy would go for both shonen and shoujo.

I'm pretty sure at this point CLAMP is prolific enough to qualify for their own branch of shoujo XD

As for the shonen side of things, I'd split that into echii (including harem/fanservicey stuffs; ie love hina, ichigo 100%), action (initial D, full metal panic), sports (touch, h2, slam dunk), mecha (macross, gundam), psychological (monster, lain).

I'd probably make comedy it's own genre on the same level with shonen/shoujo as it tends to appeal a bit more evenly. Jungle wa itsumo hale nochi guu is definitely not shoujo or shonen for example.

As for breaking down shoujo, there's the obvious magical girl genre (mahou tsukai tai, sailor moon, kamikaze kaitou jeanne), high school romance (kareshi kanojo no jijou), and fantasy (fushigi yuugi).

There will always be shows that simply don't belong in any one genre though. Escaflowne is a great example. It's definitely chock full of both mecha and shoujo fantasy themes.

the harem ones, I forgot about that, it was in the back of my mind but it eluded me, thanks, Jon all of your ideas were great too, thank you both, and things that don't fall into one genre I was thinking just figure what single genre is most dominant.

Cardcaptor Sakura belongs to Shojo.Sub-genre Magic Girl.

Most of the anime I watch are either Science Fiction or Fantasy based then they split off into Shounen or Shojo.So Magic Girl animes like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura would be Fantasy:Shojo:Magic Girl.

Cyberpunk, Fantasy and Sci-fi for me.

Anyone mentioned slice-of-life yet? I think that "alternate universe" can also count now with recent titles such as Futakoi Alternative and Mai Otome.

yep. there's slice-of-life: Azumanga Daioh, Only Yesterday, and some others.
You forgot sports! There's Speed Racer, Prince of Tennis, Princess Nine, Baki the Grappler (wrestling is a sport after all), and some others too.

What does slice-of-life mean? And sports was mentioned up above, and Alternate universe is a great idea

Slice of life is a genre that is always shoujo, and is basically just...well, it's just how it sounds--a "slice" of life. Some of them are also romance (like Whisper of the Heart) or comedy (like Azumanga Daioh), but they mainly deal with the day-to-day lives of the characters they follow.

I also forgot another genre: weird. That would include Super Milk-Chan, FLCL, and Bobobo-Bobo. But it wouldn't include Zatch Bell or Serial Experiments Lain, because those actually make sense.

As weird as it sounds I think Bobobo-bobo (is that enough bo's?) would actually be shonen-action-martial arts, and FLCL would be Psychological, prolly drama (whatever lain would fall under) and Milk chan I believe would be somewhere under comedy

Wanted to give you guys what I got so far, if I misunderstood your suggestion (some I reworded, and sometimes that changes the meaning) please just let me know I might change it up again, we need to split up comedy more, it seems mystery might warrant a sub-genre on the level of action and fantasy, and shoujo i'm sure there's some better ways to split up, but this is what I have so far. (doesn't look too good in here since you can't do spacing, or tabs or anything like that, but this is best I could do)

Actually, I'm pretty sure all three of those would fall under the comedy category. Sure, Bobo(etc) has action and martial arts, but the show is there for comedy, mostly. FLCL...Psychological? Hardly. Psychological would be something like Lain or Monster; something that has no comedy. FLCL is definitely a comedy, though much of the anime community finds it too confusing to be funny. Super Milk Chan is also meant to be comedy, though I don't find it particularly funny.

Bobo I never really watched (I think it looks pretty stupid) but from what I've seen it looked like a action, and FLCL does explore some psychological stuff, and Milk chan is primarily about comedy, we can both agree on that.
