How do you pronounce anime


i usually go with latin animey

sometime i say animee

but never animeh or animah

An-i(as in him)-may

i usually pronounce it animeh.

that or the entire word, animation. that doesn't create troubles.

I just take the first part of anima tion. You know what? I think Ashley tried to explain this in the mission statement. I still like to think up of alternate explanations, though. I guess the closest I could get to a phonetic spelling would be ann-eh-may. It is pretty much identical to what Gypsy wrote, but with a few changes here and there.

This is the way I believe the Japanese pronounce "anime"..

the "a" as in "far"
the "ni" just as "we"
the "me" just as "may"

i believe there shouldn't really be any problem of choosing which pronounciation, as long as the listener can understand what the word is.

isn't language communication, and isn't the reason of communication (more like a definition really) is for 2 or more people or objects to understand each others' messages? isn't it enough when that's achieved?

I always pronounced anime as k OD fi sh. My half-cent...

speaking of pronounciations...I know it's wrong but I cannot bring myself to say mahn-ga. It sounds too weird to my tongue. So yeah, I stubbornly--wrongly--say main-ga.

And yet .. it doesn't change the fact that it's mahn-ga. You want people to laugh at you?:shake:

I am pretty sure that you pronunciate it mahn-guh. I got the fragmented pronunciation from Reiko-chan's Japanese for Anime Lovers to make sure that was close to being right. Just go to the Katakana section and look up 'ma' 'ga', and for 'n' go to the Hirigana section. Just listen to the wave file for each. This will definately clear up some mispronunciations. ^_^

yeah, I guess you're right. People say it the same way over here too. mainga.

Marng gah

manga sounds very close to the korean similarity called manwha. which is pronounced mwan hwa. something like that, it's almost impossible to translate it fully into english.

good thing that japanese ripped korean pronounciations and ripped the chinese characters off. bad thing that they did a weird job at it.

I try very, very, very hard not to let my "native twang" seep through. Ask Shatterheart or Ami...unless they lied to me neither one said I had a drawl. Hence why I avoid saying words like y'all and other "texas" slang. Resta you states should be happy; you have no misconceptions to live up to! Although sometimes those misconceptions are funny...in Germany people thought my family had a herd of cattle. They wanted to see my boots (which I don't even own a pair). :rolls_eye I just say main-ga because it's easier and sounds better to my ears.

She's piling it - she only says main-ga because she can't help her accent. But for the record, Ashley, I find your drawl charming. And are you going to post a picture of all your steer roping trophies or not? We'd all love to see 'em.

Hey, us "Okies" get written off as hicks too! Although I admit, the word "y'all" is freaking burned into me At least I don't say "warsh" instead of "wash" like my mom....

To get back on topic a bit, I think Japanese vowels and pronunciation make a lot more sense than English. Like, "a" is -always- "ah", "e" is always "eh", etc etc and so forth. It's the stinkin' -consonants- that give me trouble....O_O Other than that it came kind of easily for me...::shrug:: ^^;;

Personally I just pronounce em like they look:

Anime = ah-nih-may
Manga = main-gah

Not that hard lol. I'm going to ana Anime Fans Club right now & all the people there pronounce Japanese names differently. It drives me up the wall !!

Well, English is supposed to be one of the hardest languages to learn. Sometimes I wonder where English got all it's grammer rules from.

All over the place! The original English were comprised of three different Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons, and Jutes) who spoke a number of different dialects (albiet of roughly the same language). The Viking invasions saw both Danes and Norwegians settling in England. Of course, there was also the Norman Conquest (The Normans themselves being of French/Viking stock) who brought their own variant of the French language (along with their French and Breton mercenaries). Afterwards, Norman French became the language of the ruling class and gradually changed the grammatical structure of the English language. Greek and Latin loan words also likely played a substantial role.
