I was surprised that I ended up liking
Paranoia Agent as much as I did and still do now! I almost didn't watch it all because of the inappropriate parts that I had heard about. I watched the whole series at MSP's house in one day,
Talk about a 360 opinion change! XD There still were a few inappropriate parts... but it was worth skipping those parts to see that amazing anime!

Hmmm...
Well, I know that there are several anime I knew I would enjoy when I started watching them, but I didn't expect to enjoy them as much as I did.
These would be Full Moon wo Sagashite (rocketed to my #1 favorite title
), Haibane Renmei (my #3 favorite, after I finished it), and Sailor Moon (#6 on my top 10 list). (AnimeHeretic's post reminded me to let you all know that it was the sub I fell in love with...not the dub. XD)
As for anime that I didn't think I would like, but ended up liking in the end...Well, probably the only one I can think of is FullMetal Alchemist, but that's mostly because I wasn't really sure of the content at first. A friend of mine got me hooked with the first 2 or 3 episodes, though, and once I fully understood the premise of the series, I ended up really liking it.

Sailor Moon. When I picked up the subbed version I was mainly getting it so I could study it. I expected it to be lame... I did not expect it to be comedy

Gundam 0083 - It was the show that largely got me hooked on anime. Before that I didn't think I cared too much for sci-fi/war dramas.
Trigun - Initially I wrote it off as some western anime. Then I tuned in just in time to see the climactic scene with Wolfwood near the end. I thought it might be a show worth checking out, and indeed it was.
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Azumanga Daioh - I didn't care that much for the first ep I watched; not that it was bad, but it just seemed too girly. But I caught some later eps and actually enjoyed them.
Diamond Daydreams - Again, I figured it would be girly. And indeed it is. But there's some soap opera-esque compelling element to it.

As several people have stated, FMA because of the "overrated-ness". It's not one of my favorites, but I do like it.
And...Nightwalker. I read bad reviews but bought it anyway, and still liked it.

Definitely One Piece I thought it was going to be another DBZ type series and I was pleasantly surprised that I was wrong.
Another is Rurouni Kenshin. I had read the first volume of the manga and didn't care for it, but I decided to watch the anime just because and ended up liking it (even if I did only see 10 episodes).

I thought Nightwalker was pretty good. It actually got pretty good reviews from Anime on DVD back when it was first released if I remember correctly, plus it's got vampires and it's only 2 DVDs long. There really need to be more vampire shows.
I didn't really think I was going to care for Scrapped Princess that much after I watched the first DVD, but the more of the series I watched the more I started to like it, and upon more viewings, even my opinion of the first DVD changed. ^^
Also, I wasn't that impressed with my first viewing of Mythical Detective Loki, but now I think it's hilarious. Go figure.

Digimon Tamers.
And while I didn't think it was going to suck, I was surprised I liked Fruits Basket as much as I did.

I've had more anime I went in expecting alot from and came out hating. :/
Of course, I must say
One Piece. Back when I still watched 4KidsTV, they had this point where they let you vote on what new show you wanted to see (I discovered later that the votes didn't matter -_-; ), and I went with "Mew Mew Power" (
Tokyo Mew Mew; just cuz it had catgirls Xp ).
When they ended up showing
One Piece instead, I was kinda ticked off. It was also around this time I developed this kind of hate for, how to say, "flashy", typical anime (the kind with overexpressed stuff with the wierd, flying-colored backgrounds). When I saw the main character stretching, I thought it was just another one of the wierd effects and I hated the show before even seeing it.
Then it came, and I watched the first episode. By the Kuro Arc, I was hooked (though it wasn't my "favorite" yet), and had to know more. I went online, only to discover you-know-what happened to this series, so I started checking out more on it.
The rest is history. =D
Just because some others were mentioning it, I went into NGE not expecting alot. I came out pretty much thinking the same thing. :\
Rave Master......cuz the video game was fun as heck so I kinda started watching the show.
Are you referring to the GC/PS2 one? I hated that one. Xo

I never in my life thought I'd start liking Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar... but I do.
It's so cute and sweet that it makes my dang teeth hurt!!!

GantZ i still think it has way to much unneeded crap in it but I love the story.
Silent Mobious: I thought it was gonna seem to dated to me but I was wrong
Dnangel: It started pretty slow but once it gets going it is quiet good.

Gungrave at first seemed a bit too gamey to me.Then after the first episode when they started to show everything that had happened up to that point I started to like it.

(I agree with Tiny Snow Fairy [Faerie] Sugar. I got the first volume from the library because I read the review and knew I could watch it, back when I had zero anime okay for me to watch. Suprisingly enough, I ended up really liking it. I knew I would like it to some degree, because it has faeries, but not as much as I did.)
(I didn't expect to like Naruto all that much either - but I watched a bit last week and intend to watch some more.)
(Hikaru no Go for sure. I don't remember why I picked it up (it may have started here - but I don't think so), but I'm glad I did. Usually stories with ghosts of some sort don't appeal to me, but Sai is a good enough character to, ah, override that to some degree. Now, I've read all the manga currently released in the U.S., have volumes one and two of the anime, and play Go quite a bit.)

Genshiken. I read the first volume of the manga, and it was, at the time, the most boring I had ever read. My brother and I decided to give the anime a shot, though, but the first episode was right on par with the first volume of the manga - but after that, it got much better and has actually proved to be pretty hilarious.

Figure 17. I passed it up on the shelves many times. Then one day I was looking for something new to watch so I thought, "Why not." Excellent series.

Shaman King. My little brother watched it every Saturday morning and I would sometimes watch it with him and comment on why the Chinese guy had a British accent. Of course, I started watching it at the END of the series, but I watched more and more and really liked it. My brother didn't believe I liked it for the longest time. He thought I was playing a joke on him.

One anime I didn't think I would enjoy as much as I ended up was Colorful because of all the negative reviews that centered on the fan-service nature of the series. But when I saw it on AU I couldn't stop laughing as I found it to be really
hysterical.

Easy: Monster
My friends were telling me "zohemgeez Monster is amazing watch it". I didn't expect it to be some massively amazing show.
Through the first 3 episodes, I was getting really bored. On the 4th episode however, It sucked me in... I was stuck.. immersed in the show. Addicted
