I saw two episodes of it fansubbed. It struck me as an extremly poor rip-off of Mahoromatic meets Girl Bravo. It was crass and actually rather sexist. Wasn't worth continuing to watch and I had no interest in the manga.

Can't believe someone thought it was worth acquiring the rights to.

I saw it once because I thought the character designs would be incredible cute! And although I've gone through such series like Chobits and Elfen Lied because of the good storylines, after watching one ep of DearS I was really bothered and thought "This plot isn't going anywhere -_-" Oy... horrible... Too bad the manga-kas did this and yet have pulled off real good stuff like Rozen Maiden.

It doesn't matter if something is "worthy" of being liscenced, companies will pick up any trashy series if it has potential to become popular. I saw a list of the top ten best selling Tokyopop graphic novels a while ago, and the whole chart was dominated by DearS, so I suppose it's turning into quite the cash cow.

I was unaware of that. If it was a big moneymaker it makes sense I guess. I guess the old saying is true: Nobody ever went bankrupt underestimating the taste of the public.
