Looking for Recommendations

I’m looking for another series to try out, but just can’t decide on what to get.
I have read enough reviews to make my head spin and I’m still not getting anywhere. So I was hoping that you guys could give me a hand. What anime should I get next? I have already seen a great deal of what has gone mainstream in the US and a few others. I’m not really interested in any school-girl anime, nor those with questionable amounts of violence or nudity (or religiously offensive). Vintage doesn’t matter so much, but what I am interested in is a good story. Comedy is fine, but I would prefer that it was not the backbone of the series.
Well, I guess that’s it. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Oh, and you don’t have to worry about distribution, if its out there I can probably find it.
Thanks a lot everyone!

I cannot let this thread pass without my customary plug of Hamtaro.
(Incidentally, we've been missing you over at the Guild, guy... ^_^; )

Hey MM, thanks for the Hamtaro pitch, but that is one of the series I have already seen a lot of. Not that its bad in any way, Im just looking for somthing new. ^_~
Sorry about the Guild thing... I really should stop by. Maybe its time for a reunion.

Azumang-
oh...
*walks away sadly*
You ought to try Full Metal Panic. It has some school-type comedy. But it also has a LOT of cool mecha action. Some fanservice (Full Metal Panic: Fomuffu has a lot more)
But if you want story, go for Urasawa Naoki's Monster. Best series I have ever seen. It's only fansubbed though, so get them if you got bittorrent. But volumes 1 and 2 are out in the uS.
Monster is a must for all anime fans.

Thanks MrSP. I have seen most of Azumanga Daioh, and FMP (fomoffu too). I know what you mean about the fan service, FMP would be an awesome show if it werent for that... >_<
But I have never heard of Urasawa Naoki's Monster... I will have to check it out.
*goes to see what he can find*
Oh... I found it... It looks kinda interesting (and is rated pretty high) but it also says: "May contain sex, drugs, and extreme graphic violence." Which are somthings Im not really interested in... Thanks anyway. ^_^
Anyone else have some recomendations?

Final Fantasy Unlimited and Pretear are a couple of great series. I really enjoyed Pretear. Neither are of the school-girl genre, and Pretear has a decently good storyline. I've heard that FMA is really good...although I've yet to see it.

Thanks FaerieChica, I have also heard that Pretear is pretty good. But it looks... Well... Maybe a little to Shoujo for me... I had thought about trying FFUnlimited, but the reviews about it are really mixed. Perhaps that means I need to try it out and formulate my own opinion.
Thanks for the recomendations!

Gah! How could I forget?
Paranoia Agent! 13 Episodes long. And a GREAT psychological thriller with lots of symbolism. There are 2 instances of nudity, one being sexual. It's only the chest for about one second. Paranoia Agent is like somewhere in my top 5. And it's licensed! It's a must see.

Thanks MrSP, but I am still trying to lean away from the mature-nudity-especially sexual titles... Even if its only a little bit, thats more then I want, and Im not willing to compromise my morals for entertainment. Its just not worth it to me.
Thanks anyway (sorry to keep shooting down your ideas, no offense please). ^_^

Just wanted to say that's a very neat statement right there.
It'd be awesomely helpful to list the animes you've seen. lol, is it possible for you do that?

I recommend Bleach. ^_^ The only element of warning there is a bit of language. Great anime though.

I cant say that I have always tried to follow these guidelines, but in the last few years God has really been convicting me with the kind of stuff I pass off as "fan-service" or "but the story is really good" and allow into my head/heart.
Anyway, I can definately give you a list of anime I have seen that I think hold generally to this standard, but the reviews section here does do a good job a pointing out the potentially offensive areas in a variety of anime. It might be good to really read through what people write there instead of just taking the age recomendation as meaning its ok to watch. ^_^
EDIT: Thanks FadedOne, I also like Bleach. But you are right, it does have some bad language at times and some pervy humor/camra agles. I admit that I havent been as interested in it since the last story ark ended. Maybe I should try and catch up on whats happening.

Haibane Renmei is one of the greatest anime I've ever seen. There is a VERY brief scene of gore in the first episode, and some swearing throughout the series, but besides that, it is nothing short of amazing. However, I should note that it moves a bit slowly...

NARUTO! If you haven't seen it, well, YOU NEED TO SEE IT!
Umm, my only other suggestion is Genshinken, an anime about being an otaku. Freakin hilarious...

Thanks Orenji, I was actually reading about Haibane Renmei the other day. It does look pretty interesting, Im always up for those phychological stories (as long as they are not to creepy). Have you seen it through to the end? I noted that the main characters apear to be angle-like in apearance... Is there anything religiously offensive? I might just check this one out. ^_^
Yep! Gotta love old Naruto Jadepanther. I honestly havent followed it since about 10 episodes after it deviated from the manga... Has it gone back on track yet? These filler epidsodes are just killing me.
I actually started watching Genshinken, but in like the first episode the main character goes looking for pornagraphy or somthing in the clubs room. It just wasnt a good start for me, so I havent cared to go back and see if it gets better...

I'd recommend Heat Guy J and Boogiepop Phantom. The latter is more of a horror anime, but I've seen parts of it, and it's pretty good.

All of the Haibane have wings and (home made) halos. I have seen the series in its' entirety, and despite the Haibane's appearance, there isn't anything religiously offensive, save for some fan theories.

O.O Yeah...that's quite a few.
After looking at my list, and seeing what you might like, I've come up with 1:
Spiral ~Bonds of reasoning~ (Or Melody of logic)
I have this anime. The review here on CAA is really good. The language details when it's subbed are always depending on where you get it from. But I think the language is the biggest part of the anime that I didn't like.
I like this anime because it's a mystery anime, and most of the time the style of animation is Real type in serious animes, but this was more along the animation of Shoujo almost (Almost). I also thought the traps and stuff and how they figured them out were totally clever.
Also, as said in the Sexual details, the two male characters seem like they have a Yaoi relationships at times, but it's part of the "artistic" side of the anime. But I'd agree with the reveiw as far as that goes.
It's somewhat of a depressing anime, but I like it a lot because it's clever and there's no "powers" involved in it.
I don't think you'd like anything else I've seen. I'm a girl, so I like girl animes. *shrug* lol.

GIANT ROBO!!! EVERYTHING YOU WANT AND MORE!!!!!

It's licensed too. At Best Buy it's about $10 a disc, and there's three discs.

I second Mr. Smartypant's recommendation of Monster as well as Paranoia Agent. Also you could try Master Keaton since you're looking for something with a good story. You could also try the Black Jack anime.

If you can put up with Trigun, I'd suggest Gungrave. Content is on about the same level (although a bit more violent), and it's quite addictive.

One Piece (some)
Watch more (of the original). Trust me. It starts of as a seemingly simple series, but as you get further in (namely the Arlong and Alabasta Arcs), the story gets amazing.
Bloody, yes, but no gore, and only a small bit of nudity (from the back).

Was that just Gatekeepers or have you also seen Gatekeepers 21?If you haven't seen Gatekeepers 21 then I suggest you try it as well as it is something of a sequel to the original series.
Also I have found Noir to be satisfyingly better than Gungrave to watch.
