Question: Why does Network TV only show Action Anime?

Postby ChristianKitsune » Sat Jun 03, 2006 8:00 pm

I have noticed that most Network Television stations like AS, Toonami, Meguzi, AU and even Jetix have really only shown anime that has a lot of action in it....IE Shonen stuff...

Why is that? Does Shojo anime really not appeal to american Audiences? Have they ever really tried to show Shojo anime? Like Fruits Basket?

(and I am not talking about Sailor Moon...^^; )

I would imagine for the same reason most video games have combat of some sort ~ a predominately male audience. But that's just my opinion.

As for if Shojo anime does or doesn't have any appeal to american aduiences.

Yes and no. Most of your fans for shojo anime will go out and buy the dvd's and most people that watch AS are college age kids. Not all, but most want to see two things funny stuff or action in it.

Kim Manning, who is head of AS programing. She said that she would love to see love story animes on AS, but she said for now. They know that there wouldn't get good ratings for them. She said say at one time, they wanted to try one and test the waters at AS.

Since I live in near Atlatna. I get to read alot of write ups in the Atlanta paper about AS and cartoon network. Last year, there was a write up about a group of college kids that take one day out of the week to go to a late night eating spot and have a AS party. In the write up, all the college kids talk about was the non anime action or funny stuff and never said a word about anime at all.

This tells the story on why we don't see some or more anime on AS now.

From what I have read and seen as the group of people that mostly watch AS, there are ones that are not to much into anime and not into love story stuff too.

Hey they could show Shojo on the Soap Network because they would be like soap operas and I bet soap fans would enjoy them and you would have a whole new group of anime fans.

Hamtaro is an example of a non-action anime that ran on CN.
Also I wouldn't call Colorful or Cromartie High overly action oriented and they both ran on AU.So it isn't quite true to say that only action related anime is run on
tv(also remember AU also ran Serial Experiments Lain).
