Do you read fanfiction?

I love the stuff, particularly when it tries to resolve a cliffhanger (like the Tenchi Muyo! OVA had until recently).

I particularly like to read romance fics (but no yaoi or yuri, obviously), as well as those with an epic scale (in other words, it's usually "the longer, the better!").

What are your favorite fics?

I personally can't stand fan-fiction. No one knows the characters like the original author, and I dislike it when anyone other than an original author tries to write stories with characters. That said, I have a lot of friends who are fans of it, and some who even write it. I just don't get the appeal.

I'm the same way. Fanfiction authors frequently write OOC characters, make ridiculous romantic involvements, and have Mary Sue characters. Given that, I can't enjoy fanfics...at least not in the conventional way.

However, I CAN enjoy fanfics when they are MST'd, in other words, using Mike, Joel, and the bots from the popular television show Mystery Science Theater 3000 to make fun of fanfics. In that sense, my "favorite" fanfics are anything written by Dr. Thinker, because his grammar is horribly atrocious and makes for amusing statements...I'll never forget the line "out pooped Sailor Mercury."

I'll also never forget the infamous Oscarfics. Those are travesties against humankind...and hilariously funny when Joel and the bots tear it apart.

I love fanfiction but I am very picky. If I'm not picky I end up reading a story that leaves me thinking "I just wasted hours of my life and it feels like my brain is rotting." I tend to stay away from the romance fics that drag on with no plan or plot. In my experience longer is not always better XD;;

I used to read a ton of Inuyasha fanfiction, and I still have a few that I go back and read every once and awhile. Unfortunately there's alot of bad BAD BAD TERRIBLE fanfics to wade through to find the good ones. Even if you avoid the yuri/yaoi and lemons, its sadly hard to find well written, well-though-out fanfics. I read one-shots alot now.

Did anyone read digimon fanfics waaaay back when? I have some fond memories of Digimon fanfiction. There were a few long chapter stories that I wish I could find again.

I used to write some interesting Final Fantasy crossovers.

Then I wrote "The Cid Highwind Show", a comedy crossover of FF and some kingdom Hearts stuff. That took the fanfiction sites I logged onto by storm.

(Seriously, The Cid Highwind Show did win some comedy awards. If anyone wants to read them, gimme a hollar, or I can post them on CAA.)

I'm not a fan :/ I used to write them and even read a couple of them, but now I'm just not into them anymore :/ Besides some are so looong and I'm just not into reading things like I used to^^ Too many words make me browse too much and miss alot (even in Bible reading I'm bad for that^^) Only a few novels do I even read nowadays...

i used to read some inuyasha ones but i stopped after they started changing the way the characters were. like they made inuyasha this love sick mushy guy that professed his love to kagome every chance he got. stuff like that that anyone who has ever seen an episode knows that its way off base gets a little annoying.

I love fanfiction...but I hate how you have to search high and low for a really good one..Fushigi Yugi had some good ones a while ago,but now,on Fanfiction.net,there's like,a whole page filled with stories with the same plot and usually Mary Sue is the main character.. -_-...Now,the only fanfics I read are from Rurouni Kenshin and Escaflowne

I read fanfiction for lesser known series. Usually there's less to wade through and more original plots.

What annoys me alot is when they take one characteristic of a character and blow it up so that its the ONLY aspect of his character. I mean, when authors make up their characters they don't make them so flat! They have more layers to them than just being mad or quiet... An ideal example of this is Kikyo from Inuyasha. I absolutely HATE it when people reduce her to "The dead clay-b**** who hates Kagome and wants to drag Inuyasha to hell". She's sooo much deeper than that.

I write some comedy fanfics, but I don't let anyone see the besides close friends ^^;;

I feel obligated to read my friends fanfics, but other than that, I could care less about them. I'd rather not dig through crap looking for gold.

I don't read Fanfic... I tend to like the charachters as the authors/screenwriters intended.

hm, once in awhile. However, there's so many lemons easily accessible that I always end up reading something perverted. <.< Better to just avoid fanfics all together.

Lemons are very scary things v_v That they are... I remember the time when I found out what the definition of what one was :/ Oh and basically 50% of fanfics is for shounen/shoujo-ai ideals, just because they can :/

Sometimes fanfiction just clicks and actually offers insight into the characters and events. Sometimes it can insightful, amazingly well written and a means through which to finally resolve unfinished plot points in the original works.

And then 95% of the time it inspires reactions ranging from 'meh' to 'WHAT were they thinking??'. And I LOVE Mary Sues, but not in a good way. I have an unfortunate habit of reading over all the LJ communities dedicated to sporking the worst of the worst sue-fics. It's so snarky and cynical, I really can't help feeling somewhat guilty about it. But atrocious sues can be quite hysterical ^^;

Random fics I've read and enjoyed:

Falling Feels like Flying (Doc Ock)
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1986026/1/

Shape of his Heart (FFX)
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2068984/1/

Don't Panic (LoTRs Anti-Sue)
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1690622/1/

Can't vouch for the content in the last one as I'm only just reading it at the moment. Still, it's pretty interesting thus far. I imagine the inhabitants of Middle Earth probably would stink pretty bad.

The reason why I keep digging through pages upon pages of lame fics is definitely because I'm always holding out for that one diamond in the rough. *nods*

Basically never. That's somewhat ironic, because I've been known to actually write fanfiction. But the only time I ever read anything of this type is when I'm helping out some younger authors on their writing skills.

mechana2015 wrote:I don't read Fanfic... I tend to like the charachters as the authors/screenwriters intended.

For the most part, I like fanfiction intentionally writing characters as the authors didn't intend them. Alternate-universes and the like, though certainly not those that place characters in random settings completely unrelated to the original series, which I somewhat despise.

I used to read and write fanfiction extensively.

Now...most fanfiction makes me sad. While I do enjoy taking concepts/characters in a series and running with them in my own imagination, the extent to which some people do this in fanfiction is intolerable.

I'll read fanfiction every once in a while, but only if it pertains to a canon relationship or is incredibly well written (shout to AngelSakura--hers are some of the only ones I read XD). I hate it when people try to make pairs that aren't really there, especially when they're homosexual pairs...>_< Gah.

Also, I can't stand reading fanfics that are badly written. By "badly written," I mean bad grammar. XD Seriously, if you can't help typing "u" for "you" and "2" for "too," you shouldn't be trying creative writing. :lol: Besides, if you're writing a story that you want people to enjoy, you should have some measure of intelligible language.

Anyways, I've only read about 5 fanfics in the span of my lifetime, but I do read them every now and again when I'm bored. :thumb:

I really like fanfiction. I only read the fanfics about the certain things that I like (which makes sense... <_<). I pretty much have only been reading (and writing) fan fics about The Legend of Zelda games. I really don't mind people making the characters different... because they weren't really all that Living and breathing in the first place. Written fiction ads a deeper dimension than just the text dialogue that you read in the games. Well written ones can be very awesome and enjoyable. Of course there are writers who will create odd romantic situations, etc. But on certain fan fiction sites they will tell you what it is rated and for what reasons...

That's my two cents.

I have read some fanfic based on Noir, Tenchi Muyo, Trigun, and Princess Mononoke.
Some of them to me were like answers or continuations of some of the stoies.
The funniest story I read was a cross over of Tenchi Muyo and Star Trek the Next Generation.
I in a way started writing my own fan fic with a crossover and added a new idea for a series. Its sort of a Tenchi Muyo meets the US and Japanese Special Forces end up on El Hazard fight to save kiddnap victims with new gained powers and return with the new powers ready to take on freedoms enemies. I started another crossover with the same characters with the characters from Nadia Secret of Blue Water meeting by accident because of a rift in outer space but I got to a point where I couldn't figure where to go with a scene so I sort of put it on a long hold sitting in a paper notebook.

I have to really, really like the anime or whatever before I'll read the fanfic. FF7 fanfic tends to be pretty good, but too many people brought back Aerith's and Sephiroth's corpses from the dead.

Oh, the fanfic hate on this thread!

Anyways, yes, most fanfiction is very, very bad, though there are some gems out there. As for myself, I have several stories I've written:

A YuYu Hakusho one that sucked along with a sequel that was never finished;

An InuYasha short that is slightly AU but that I'm proud of as far as writing style goes,

A .hack// oneshot I'm proud of as well,

A Rurouni Kenshin/Trigun crossover/amalgamation staring Kenshin the Stampede... yeah, that one was written solely as a joke to amuse myself.

A Dead or Alive story I need to get back to...

Anyways, for better or worse, you can find it at http://www.fanfiction.net/~animusseed though I must say, all of the above were written long ago in a less...sanctified time of my life... don't even bother reading the Hakusho fics, as their "bad religion" content is off the chart. InuYasha... well, I don't watch InuYasha anymore because of all the reincarnation and stuff, but if it doesn't bother you, there's nothing in the story that will offend you either. The .hack// and Kenshin/Trigun tongue-in-cheek I still like, though. As for the DOA story... as planned, it was also going to have a high "bad religion" scale, but is incomplete enough at the moment that I have time to turn it around (as it stands, the main character has just been born :) ) I don't know when or if I'll ever get back to writing fanfiction... after all I've written before, I'd like to write something that glorifies God in some way. But inspiration has yet to strike.

I make fanfics and accompanying illustrations.

Although most fanfics that I encounter in ff.net have my fave charas severely butchered.

There is a couple of fics that I follow on ff.net. I have nothing against fanfiction in general but 90% of it is embarrassingly bad.

And I prefer my stories reasonably well-written...

I like fanfics alot, although it is often very hard to find good ones. My list of saved favorite fanfics on FF.net is only like 14 titles long. The only kinds of fanfics I read are romance and parody fics, and even then I usually only read fanfics for anime parings that are NOT canon in the anime. Other types of fanfics are usually really bring to me.

I've written 4 fanfics in my life; a short Tenchi in tokyo one-shot, a Ai Yori Aoshi one shot, a Silent Hill 2 one shot, and a really long 5 episode Pokemon series.

Don't ask me why but I really like to read fan-fics. Unfortunately it's so hard to find decent fan-fics anymore. I generally read comedies anyway.
