noob anime list to not watch
PostPosted: Mon May 29, 2006 8:11 pm
by spooon
so, i found this site and wanted to know which anime shows I should NOT watch. about 10 years ago I watched everything from some hentia and stuff like vampire D, vampire princess miyu?.
I have since reformed and am trying to find anime that do not have Demons and devils so much. I rent movies online and wanted to know which ones I should stay away from. I have looked through the reviews section but wasn't very helpful.
i consider something like naruto which is on cartoon network but it read has some demon stuff in it.
is there anything out there anymore that I can watch?
my next list i'm thinking about hitting is
1)samurai X (kenshin stuff)
2)full metal alchemist
3)samuria champloo
4)trigun
5)outlaw star
6)fushigi yugi
i might be at a lost and have to give up anime all together except for what "my neighbor totoro?"
thanks in advance for any input.

You might want to consider taking off Fushigi Yugi from your list (it has some serious stuff in it--like god/goddesses, and a plot line relying heavily on rape/sex/gender-bending); there's a thread floating around here somewhere for more info on that.
As for titles to try, Full Moon wo Sagashite's an excellent one that's mostly clean. The only slightly questionable aspect would be that Takuto and Meroko are "shinigami" or "gods of death"--grim reaper figures. But the series overall is very cute and clean; there's a review of it in the database.
There's also Last Exile; I'm not through with it, but so far, it's devoid of demons and squeaky clean.
Cowboy Bebop is a bit on the violent side, but has nothing religiously offensive to it; unless you count Faye's wardrobe. ^^;;
That's about all I can think of at the moment, but if I think of more I'll come back. Hope this helps!

if your trying to stay away from just demon stuff then i think taht list is ok. however...i might warn you that samarai champloo...cusses a lot and has a few....sexual inuendos. full metal alchemist was also good but if your wanting geared more towards the christian side...its main character is an atheist and he shows it. lol. either way i have seen most of those series and i loved them. personally i would recomend 2,3,4,and 5 but i cant say anything for the others cause i havnt seen them.
i would recomend also eureka 7..i just started watching it myself on CN but so far it has been pretty good. also ghost in teh shell is pretty good. its got a lot of political stuff in it tho if your not into that. you might also look into one of the many gundum series. some of them arent to bad
fruits basket is also a wonderful series but most of the people turn into animals...so thats prolly not what your looking for. however it is a really good anime

One Piece (the original, not the dub). There's a few things I may have to explain, but you can PM me if you want to hear more about it. Trust, the true series is great (like LOTR meets DBZ, but better XD ).
Also, FMA is good, but the anime (I hear) kinda veers off like crazy in the second half. Stick to the manga.

I would say you've picked out some good ones, minus the ones people have told you to avoid already. I'll add that Outlaw Star has some language and a few innuendoes. I see that you have Samurai X on your list, too. Do you mean the OVA's, or the series, Rurouni Kenshin? The series is quite good, but with some bad language and a little blood (a 12 year old could handle it, though), but the Samurai X Trust and Betrayal OVA is quite bloody and much more serious than the series. Both are very well done, however!
Anyways, hope that helped a bit!

A "few?" Actually, if that's one of his problems I might suggest avoiding it. Or, at least, the spa episode (I made the mistake of watching that episode... @.@ ).

Good Clean Anime with no demons, magic, or 'service...'
Top of the list: Trinity Blood
Last Exile has only one slight 'service' scene, good stuff otherwise.
Next you might also enjoy:
- Pani Poni Dash
- Avengers
- Azumanga Daioh
- Glass no Kantai (looks good so far - nice costumes, no magic.)
- Suzuka (romance, sports)
Avoid:
- Basilisk Kouga Nippon Cho,
- Ayakashi Classic Japanese Horror,
- Hundred Stories,
- Kyo Kara Maou,
- M.A.R. (aka "Marchen Awakens Romance")
and you possibly might want to steer clear of 'Otogizoushi.'
'Ginban Kaleidoscope' also has some kind of 'two souls possess one body' theme.
'Bleach' spends a lot of time in a spirit world halfway between this life and a final resting place of souls called 'Soul Society;' kind of like Charon and the river Styx in Greek mythology...
You might also want to avoid MAI Hime / MAI Otome because combat using supernatural powers, high levels of 'service,' and some girl/girl relationships get UNCOMFORTABLY close... Otome in particular uses combat powers which are unlocked by a kiss on an earring. However, in Otome the effects are more clearly explained as technology than magic, the fact that the combat outcomes affect the combatants' partners aw well implies a "linked spirits" or "life-force" thing - which isn't really indicated in Christianity.
fantastic reponses!

i guess i should have gone into what i have seen
i'm old school robotech which started it all off like 15+ years ago and have hit the major ones like berserk, ghost in the shell, akira, record of the lodoss wars, tenchi, ranma 1/2, princess mononoke, cowboy bebop (only on cartoon network and dubbed)....
i have started to fill up my que and was digging around and was thinking about trying my best to steer clear of the demon stuff as much as possible.
This list you guys have complied is very nice and helpful and i will be adding those suggested to my que.
i have since taken off fushigi yugi from my que;)
i guess i should clarify what is okay.
blood, guts, foul language and a little bit of nudity is okay. like gunbuster was okay from what i remember seeing it like 6 years ago. stuff like lord of the rings with D&D elements are fine. different religions i am acceptable to and atheists are fine too.
stuff to avoid.
I am trying to be a little more picky about what i watch and stuff like the remake of the omen started me thinking that i really shouldn't be watching stuff like that (didn't see the remake but i did see the original when i was younger). I have since banned all movies from julia stiles ( not like i'm missing much). blood worship, demonic stuff is a no no I will try and avoid as much as possible.
any take on
1)excel saga
2)scrapped princess
3)record of the lodoss wars ( saw this a long time ago, i think they came out with a new series)
4)escaflowne
again thanks for the input!

Excel Saga - The subbed version is somewhat crude with some innuendo (although much of it is somewhat obscure), however the dub is really raunchy. There is alot of violence, somewhat brutal, but it's intended to be more amusing than disgusting. This goes for episodes 1-25, I stopped watching episode 26 really quickly (not long after the credits) because it is terrible. Overall good, but on the mature side.
Record of Lodoss War - I liked both the OVA and TV series. The shows have D&D-type elements and violence with minor nudity (mainly skimpy clothing), but nothing extremely objectionable.
Escaflowne - The series is excellent and ranks as one of my favorites. The series gets gory at times with a surprising amount of blood at points, but nothing unusual for a typical fighting anime. There are some typical fantasy elements, use of tarot cards, and much discussion of fate, but no real demonic elements. I think this would fit your requirements as well.
If you have more questions, the reviews cover these series in more detail, but (aside from Scrapped Princess which I'm not familiar with) I think they fit your requirements.

I second on Azumanga Daioh. That series is a RIOT. You will have to pause just to laugh, your sides will hurt, and your lungs will bleed humor.

For new animes without any Demons, magic, service; would be Prince of Tennis, but you got to like Tennis to watch it. The characters are awesome though. I've seen it up to Episode 55 of 178 episodes and from what I've seen, this will fit your criteria.

oh, come on now. I guess I should go ahead and say i'm chinese soooo.
freaking A, tennis would be in!
thanks.
(not saying all chinese people love tennis or ping pong but here in texas it's like girls learning to play piano or violin)

yep. i'd recommend mainly any good sports anime since it probably wouldn't have any demons or that much violence.
hajime no ippo
slam dunk
prince of tennis (i second starwarsboy90)
also, here are some other good animes w/o a lot of demons, 'service', or language:
samurai 7 (good anime.)
getbackers (no demons, but there is some religious stuff. mainly, questioning the betrayal or judas. not THAT bad though)
bleach (the hollows, aren't necessarily demons, since a demon is a fallen angel. but there is some spiritual content. refer to the anime review)
black cat (good stuff man. good stuff.)
one piece (yep. pretty awesome series there.)
what not to watch:
since you're 27, you're probably old enough to watch baically any anime out there, but that doesn't mean you should. here are some more mature animes:
berserk
ninja scroll
gantz
tenge tenjo
blue gender
elfen lied
and any HENTAI/ECCHI anime out there
P.S. i'm a boy and i play both piano and violin.

I HIGHLY recommend Scrapped Princess. It's all over very clean and its got a great plot, animation style, and cast of characters. No Devil worship either (at the risk of spoiling it, I'm really telling the truth. Just watch the whole thing).

i feel sad now. i think i'm the oldest person in here.
great stuff all around and haven't really thought about the sport anime group.
oh and i played piano until i out grew my body and picked up basketball and football. but anytime I can get in a good game of ping pong i'm down!
i've been trying to use imdb and other general review sites to pick and chose but by far this board has been the most helpful I have seen in any post.
off subject:
if any of u guys want to play in my nfl 2k5 league on xbox your more than welcome for a try out as we are in our 10th season. hookem

You're not the eldest, Mitsuki Lover's in his 40's (I believe). In fact, there are a good number of 20-ish people here that I've seen, although there are more teens.

you probably already know this site but, you could try going to
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com. i usually only go there to check out the animes' plot and how popular it is. it's a pretty good site though. it even tells you how many episodes, the theme songs, and the publisher of the anime. they do mangas too.

sweet, I'm not the oldest
thanks for the link.
let me see if i can stump some of you guys with this one cartoon/anime?
I was in hong kong as a kid say 1985? and they had this anime on.
3 guys.
one tall guy in a blue metal space suit
one short fat guy in a green metal space suit
main character i think was in red.
they all flew in space ships in outer space and everything was set in space. I can not for the life of me figure out what this was and would like to rent it again to relive my childhood.
I remember the short fat green suit armour guy could like shoot like a ball and chain out of his knee or something.
sorry it's not more descriptive and i'm not expecting much considerin how little information i have given you.
thanks for the help

Yeah,I'm almost dead!LOL!!!:)
Ok,to be serious I forgot about Dual when I made the list.*Shame on me!*
Also if you don't mind fanservice every so often there's always Neon Genesis
Evangelion. Then too check out lists such as The Parents' Guide To Anime at
the Anime Cafe that have titles listed according to the MPAA code something like that might help.

yeah, i was about to watch naruto but then the term "demon" i was trying to stay away from.
i'm currently watching prince of tennis and am pretty happy with that

Naruto's Demon really isn't a demon. It's more a big red fox with 9 tails, then they use spells and sutff (I have seen up to ep 200 or something) But there is some spiritual things in that show. Plus the quality of the series starts to decline around episode 130.

I dont think giving you a list of shows not to watch would do you much good, because there are many bad anime. And there are many good. Some that I have liked that were fairly clean are:
Trigun: Mild language, some blood/violence, maybe some male rear nudity (really quick)
Last Exile: see review
Kenshin: See review
hope this helps

true, i've been taking a little bit of both
from this post i got recommendations to watch:
azumana diaoh, prince of tennis, kenshin, last exile, excel saga

that list looks pretty good, it is really difficult to avoid magic/demons/inuendos in anime, if u happne to run across them, just dont take them seriously. it would be a shame to miss a great anime do to one of the above.

I highly recommend checking out Whisper of the Heart (be warned--VERY mushy!), RahXephon, and Metropolis. No demons in these and some of the best animation out there--period!
