Has anybody seen Cat Soup?

I found it incredible. Very surreal and disturbing at many points. It felt "post modern" so to speak.

There is a review for CAA. I didn't know that. I didn't expect there to be one because it's such an unknown title.

After looking at how Scribs rated it. I must say that his ratings are inaccurate.

I thought I just killed an 1 1/2 of my life and will never get them back (along with my brain cells). It was disturbing and I really disliked it^^

I think I will end up watching this (because MSP will force me to, JK, ). It looks interesting, but I dunno about the religious irreverance part of it. It seems VERY post modern with there being absolutely no meaning in parts and the viewer is meant to make their own meaning. I think one of the creaters said basically just that: that the viewers have to find their own meaning.

It's not so much post modern as it was just random and weird.

The very definition of post modernism^^ It was a VERY experimental movie, but I have a feeling the manga-ka is on... well, SOMETHIN @_@ To come up with stuff like that... Alice in Wonderland was one thing... here's the next step up! *shudders at the whole pig scene* It reminded me of the movie Hannibal^^

I'm thinking of the philosophical movement XD sorry. I don't know where my mind's at right now.

And I thought Paranoia Agent was loosely attached to reality...

Okay, normally I just lurk and read but this topic actualy caught my attention...
I watched Cat Soup a while back, due mainly to the 'Hello Kitty on Acid' description and actualy thought it was kinda amusing... it has some rather interesting symbolic points in it that can be interpreted in many ways... and a lot of the strange subject matter can also be found in mythology as well (look at the average myths out there... chalk full of incest and cannibalism... *thinks of Cronus devouring his kids*) But of course its not for everyone... personally think the rating in that one review was a little off (not that I'm in any position to say much about that) but thats me and yeah...
I think I'll go back to lurking...

When they interviewed the director of the OVA. He mentioned that at points, he didn't even know what he was thinking when adding someting. You can look for symbolic meanings, but there isn't any.

There are a number of underlining themes of course. Including transcendence of man's existence and stuff like that.

Heh reminds me of RahXephon... watching "the making of" on the DVD, and they said how they came up with the story while the staff went out for a social drink one night @_@... and then I rememebered in a sort of Eva/Rah vs. thread that someone HAD mentioned that Rah was made while people were drunk, basically :/ Guess alcohol effects more than just the lower region of the brain :/

That's the main reason why I'm not interested in Cat Soup. It doesn't have a firm meaning behind it. But that's also a good thing I guess...because it's art.

That was somewhat of a turn off for me too. But the other aspects of the OVA were great. Such as the theme and the art/animation and it's uniqueness.

lol, Even if something wasn't originaly meant to be put in you can still find symbolism in things if they weren't intended. Like how people still look for allegory in The Lord of the Rings when Tolkien said it himself that the story wasn't allegorical and that he hated allegory in all of its forms. Or how you can often tell the religion or thought pattern of an author by the random things they write.
I suspect people suconciously put meaning into the things they make even if they really don't want to, don't care, or are on acid.

I guess that's what makes things good, if people can find a meaning in it even if one wasn't originaly intended which is why paintings done by people on acid trips can be apreciated as art (thinks of more than half the stuff her cousin paints...)

? Actually, I read that Tolkien said that when he wrote LOTR, the obvious allegories were unintentional, but intentional in the revision. I wrote a term paper on him back in my freshman year of highschool, so that's where I found out about it. Anyways, yeah. XD

As for this anime, I think I'll stay away. Not only does it look really weird, but the disturbing stuff in it doesn't sound like the kind of thing I'd enjoy watching. :/

That's how SO many movies are made. People look at something and they just start saying "oh this represents this and that about society" and blah blah blah; they're making it all up in their heads to what they want to see.

Anyway, I would never have understood the story had I not read the description on the Netflix cover when I saw it.
Very cool animation. Silent films are sweet :)

Well I watched the movie yesterday, and I indeed found it... interesting, to say the least. There were a few random parts, but I think I picked up on some of the themes/meanings... or meaning that I found in it that may not have necessarily been intended to be there in the first place.

A mix of Dali and pollock and "injecting LSD directly into your eyeballs"

I wasn't very fond of this one...

People kept on saying things like that, so I thought it would be way more crazy than it ended up being. I thought there would be flashing images of color and crazyness every second. Although the images always didn't make sense or didn't seem to have a meaning, they flowed relatively smoothly together and weren't completely random plot jumps from minute to minute.
I still think that flood was representing Noah and the Ark
This was a very... interesting movie. Not really bad. I don't even think the age rating should have been so high really. All violence was kind of unrealistic. It was definately weird. It also had a weird ending.
