Anyone actually LIKE/PREFER DiC Sailor Moon?

Postby MomoAdachi » Sat Apr 29, 2006 8:42 pm

OK, I'll say right off the bat that is NOT, by any means, by intention to start a nasty sub-vs-dub debate, but merely for me to see if I really am the only one out there who's watched some uncut, subtitled Sailor Moon and prefers the DIC version overall.
Here's why I prefer DIC(just my humble opinion)
(1) the theme song is catchier, although I do really love Moonlight Densetsu too
(2) the dialogue is funnier.
(3) I love Sailor Says! I miss it on the Geneon episodes.
(4) I like most of the names better, other than Serena/Usagi.
(5) I like the characters better, especially the villians. I think DIC's Queen Beryl and Zoycite are a riot.
(6) There is less religious imagery/symbolism.
(7) With episodes skipped, it's a bit faster-paced. When watching the entire series in order, it doesn't take as long to meet the Inner Senshi/Scouts.

Now, keep in mind, this is all coming from a person who loves Sweet Valley High, Saved By The Bell, and Jem and the Holograms, and collects Barbie dolls. If anything, I like that's it's more one-dimensional and superficial! ;)

Here's where a mod will post a warning - if this turns into another mindless (generally speaking) sub vs. dub fight, I'm going to shave Zilch's head when he's sleeping ... I mean ... I'll close this thread.

I prefer the sub but I don't hate Dic's dub either. I did go through the trouble of buying all the dub-only DVDs afteral. I do think a lot of the dialogue was very funny, some of the voices are good, and some of the dub music ROCKS!! My Only Love, Starry Night, Rainy Day Man, The Power of Love; all of those were great songs.

Ok...

So, someone can like Uwe Boll's movies better than, say, Christophe Gans because Uwe's movies are much easier to make fun of.

0_x Wow... Well, I disagree with you 100%

1. The DiC theme song was stupid, but you did say you like the cheesier, more 1 dimensional stuff, so this fits right along with other cartoon songs at the time. I think the original music was better. I'm one of those strange people that LIKES Ai no Senshi.
2. Some of the dialogue wasn't supposed to be funny. Like, in the ep where they faked "kicking out" Usagi from the group, in the DiC version, they made it sound like Rei betrayed Usagi by taking the crystal out of jealousy, but in the original she was protecting the crystal because of the trick they were trying to pull, they didn't want her to have the crystal with her. Why does Rei have to be a 1 dimensional petty brat in the DiC version? She is just a strong personality who actually does care for Usagi and the rest of them...
3. They were entirely unnecissary.
4. FILTH AND LIES... Er, sorry, just got back from watching Silent Hill a second time... What I meant to say was there is NEVER a reason to change names. Never. It was only done because DiC was afraid kids wouldn't watch something about Japanese kids.
5. Well, to be honest, the villains weren't really supposed to be funny. And Beryl in the Dub was really combining Beryl and Metalia, two entirely different characters, into one. That will always annoy me.
6. The only reason the crosses and relics were taken out (crosses from DiC's collection, relics from the S season) were because they were afraid of backlash, probably from a lot of Christians who thought it was sacreligious and anti-Christians who would have thought they were supporting Christianity.
7. Most of the eps they cut out weren't really important. 1 very important episode, however, that filled in some of the blanks left in the Sailor V story (since there was never an anime version of Sailor V) was cut out for pretty much no reason, and 2 very important episodes (the last two of season 1) were chopped to little bits and barely anything in them remains. Instead of there being real sacrifice, it was just that the Sailors were "captured" and Endymion just backed off somehow and let Sailormoon fight Beryl... In the original, they all died trying to protect Sailor Moon, and Endymion died after finally remembering who he was. Sailormoon, knowing that using the crystal kills it's user, used it to defeat METALIA, a character entirely left out of the DiC dub, the real force behind the evil there. In the history ep, they cut out the story of metalia alltogether, and instead just said Beryl was trying to rule the world. The truth was Beryl was a sorceress who watched Endymion and fell in love with him, but endymion loved princess Serenity. So, Beryl summoned an evil force named Metalia and Metalia basically gave Beryl power provided she did exactly what Metalia wanted, which was destroy and take over the earth, and when they did that, they moved on to the moon. Major major chunks of story were left out.

I undersand you like shallow, 1-dimensional things, but there are those of us who like the story the way it was in the Anime in Japan, and because of DiC's rights on it, it took forever for us to be able to legally see it the way it was originally. Even the Mixx Manga was drastically altered from the original Manga (funny they became tokyopop, which is a very good manga company for the most part, despite translating Sumomo's name, and apparently altering one manga to bits before they became one of the most faithfull translators in the business) So there was no way for fans to get the original story (and no way for us to get Sailor V, which never got a US release) So the fansubs were all we had... All because DiC decided to play Author with the show... And, now, with the license disputes, and ADV losing their rights to the subtitled version, it isn't really available to anyone in any form except buying used. And the DiC version is the only version available for rent in most places (including rent anime and Netflix)

I don't mind your liking the DiC version, but I hate DiC for making it legally impossible for me to really enjoy it the way it was made.

It's a wonder that a anime production company hasn't tried to do a updated verison of Salior Moon like some are doing with other series like Asto Boy or Ah My Goddess. Acourse everyonce and a while you see a anime charactor in another series that has that Salior Moon hair and face.

Wait and see what happens, Ashfire.

Takeuchi Naoko is currently in a legal battle over the rights of Sailor Moon. If she wins, then there's a good possibility it could go to a new company and the rest could be released in America.

Postby Rogie » Sun Apr 30, 2006 11:40 am

I've never really enjoyed bashing DiC for their dub of Sailor Moon, simply because they are responsible for introducing anime to quite a few otaku in North America, including some here at CAA, myself included. Would I watch the DiC dub today, now that I have the original, subbed series? Of course not. But I refuse to say the dub is a travesty, because without it, Rogie-san would likely not be here today. The dub is certainly inaccurate, but for what it was "back in the day," it was all most of us could get. And I was happy with that.

So let's all thank DiC for being indirectly responsible for the wonderful presence of yours truly, Rogie-san, here at the CAA.

Thank you.

I've never seen the sub, so I really can't compare the two -- but the dub is quite cute and funny. ^_^ (By the way, Sailor Moon was once a Care Bear. *whistles innocently* )

Hmm... this could be BAD news for fans of the anime, because She hated a lot of the anime. It's sorta funny... She thought they treated Uranus and Neptune was very harsh (they weren't lesbians in the manga, and they were older girls for the senshi to look up to, rather than being the selfish jerks they were in the anime) but she did like to hear Diana talk... Oh well... It would be cool to see a new anime on Sailormoon, one based more directly on the manga perhaps, but I'd also like to see the ADV collection be re-released...

Actually, what I'd rather see happen than ANOTHER Sailormoon is to finally have a Sailor V anime. But, it's true, Toei really sucks...

You know it's the sad truth when it's actually the JAPANESE company that's the source of the problem :/

Truthfully, I prefer the orginal to the dub, BUT the dub was what got me into it in the first place all those many years ago^^ So gotta give the dub at least THAT credit, basically repeating what Rogie had mentioned^^

No versions of Sailormoon are being made anymore (except the live action one in Japan) so the only way you can get any sailormoon is via rental or buying used... The ADV subs are getting more and more hard to find, since there weren't that many made to begin with... The DiC dubs (and the Geneon dubs) on the other hand, are readily available (used or rental only) It's nearly impossible to find the ADV subs for rental...

Here's another reason I hate the DiC version. The Holy Grail was called the Purity Chalice. What kind of stupid, PC-influenced name is that?

Well, the fansubs of Sailormoon S I watched called it the Sacred Cup, which I guess could possibly be a more accurate translation of the words used, but given all the talk of the Messiah, it's obvious that Naoko meant it to be "Holy Grail."

Really? VKLL's fansubs called it the "Holy Grail" I didn't know there WERE fansubs other than the VKLL...

BTW, DiC didn't do the S and SuperS seasons... They did classic and R, and I believe the DiC staff was used for the dubs of the movies...

As for funny, no DiC or Geneon episode could EVER compare to the Japanese version of the "International Party" episode when Usagi gets drunk by accident...

"Nice ta meechuu, kuriimu shichu. Don'ta worry, Donburi karri! See you again! Nanimo agenai!" That whole episode made me crack up...

And, I still say, the last ep of R (89 in the combined count), where someone says "We weren't scouted, Usagi" that made me crack up... They're soldiers, not scouts. Although, not self respecting soldier would wear what they wear...

For one last note, look on youtube for sailor moon 45 and sailor moon 46... Compare those to the DiC episode (the one episode they made out of those two) and tell me... Still like the DiC one?

The only thing I have to say a bit negative about the Geneon version of Super S is that they gave Lita a dorky sounding voice.

I think DiC did do the dubs of the three movies, as the original background music was replaced with the English music, and the DiC actors were used. But Geneon (or Pioneer, at the time) did the S and SuperS TV series.

I'm mixed about who did a worse job, DiC or Geneon. To their credit, Geneon KEPT the original background music, which was a huge step forward. They ALSO kept Hotaru's name the same! Since Hotaru is my favorite character, this was a huge deal for me, and I was quite overjoyed.

However, they did a worse job of writing. The SuperS dub made me cringe in fear. There was so much outdated slang in those episodes it made me want to punch babies. Hearing Serena call something "phat" is just a crime against humanity.

By the way, another episode that doesn't compare in English...in one episode, Yuuichirou (Chad in the dub) sees Rei hanging out with Haruka. In the original episode, Yuuichirou thought Haruka was a guy, and that Rei was dating her. Then later in the episode, he saw Haruka with Michiru, and was angry at Haruka. "He's two-timing Rei!" He then challenged Haruka to a duel for Rei's honor, and was upset when he learned Haruka was a female at the end of the episode.

The English version, I never understood. He apparently knew Amara was a woman the whole time. Then he got mad at Amara for...God only knows. As far as the English dub was concerned, Chad got mad at her for no reason whatsoever. THEN, the English dub makes Chad look like a total jerk because KNOWING Amara is a woman, he STILL tries to hit her! Chad trying to punch women is not cool. Yuuichirou had an excuse...he thought Haruka was a man.

So yeah, that episode was not done well at all in English.

I like Amy's voice in Super S.It's nice and quiet and soft and fits her introverted personality.

Forgot to mention that the Pioneer/Geneon dubs contradict the DiC ones in some ways. In the DiC episodes, Amy's last name is Anderson, mentioned I think when she first shows up, and later on when Greg calls her house and she answers the phone "Anderson residence."

However, when Viluy (don't know her English name) corners Amara, Michelle, and Amy in the basement of Infinity Academy in the dubbed version of S, she says "Amy Mizuno." I dunno whether I prefer this or not, I mean, if they kept the last name the same, why not the first? Though I admit there isn't a whole lot of difference between "Ami" and "Amy" besides pronunciation. But at any rate it contradicts dubbed canon and it seems ridiculous for them to have English first names and Japanese family names.
