I agree. I have the first two volumes, and I read them, I thought FB was OK, but I had a hard time really getting into the characters and the plot.

I'd say the overrated anime are InuYasha and FullMetal Alchemist. It's not that they're bad shows, I love both of them (especially the latter). But they're talked about SO often, and almost everyone says they're the most amazing things to touch the face of the earth. It's just the hype that tarnishes it, I guess.

Underrated? Air. And Whisper of the Heart. :3

[quote="MomoAdachi"]-The DIC version of Sailor Moon(has it's problems, but I don't think it's as bad as some hard-core fans say)... I hope I'm not offended anyone]

It IS as bad as some hard core fans say.

Changing Names (for americanization, read further)
Changing personalities (Rei is much more 1 dimensional in the DiC version, and not as protective, and her grandpa isn't nearly as much of a jerk in the DiC version)
Removing episodes for no reason
Removing major plot points (The Sailors get "captured" instead of dying, Mamoru just "disappears", Metalia completely disappears, and beryl goes from a lonely woman who got tricked into following metalia and being her vessel because of her(beryl's) feelings toward Prince Endymion into mindless villainess who just wants power for no real reason, and the Endymion thing seems a lot more tacked on)
Americanizing it and hiding the fact it takes place in Japan (I can't believe how many people have asked "Why is there a red and white Eiffel tower in there?" They thought the show made it up.)
Changing the music (the original opening was a decent romantic song that never once said the words "Sailor Moon" (although the Stars Theme DOES actually say "Sailor Stars" in it, but that's a bit different), the American Opening was just... stupid... That, and they got rid of the end theme and added rediculous "Eat your vegetables and do your homework" messages after all of them.

I'm not offended, I just strongly disagree with you.

Overrated

Trigun
Kenshin
Perhaps FMA
Inu Yasha

Underrated

Piano (though this may just be "underwatched" rather than "underrated")
Sailormoon (After the anime flood, it became chic to bash Sailormoon... It isn't the most intelligent thing out there, but it has a decent story and earned the fans it did for good reason.)
Onegai Teacher (At least it's underrated here... It isn't a mindless fanservice fest, there is actually some intelligence to it, and some heart... The spinoff, however... Not so much)

How about anime that are rated exactly perfectly?

Lain
Boogiepop
Cowboy Bebop (perhaps a bit overrated, but not much)

I'll start with my underrated picks:

Spriggan: Yes, it's a mindless action movie, but a darn good one. Some of the most impressive animation I've ever seen in my life (all hand-drawn, too) and spectacular action sequences.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam: Yes it is awesome, and people fail to realize it is intentionally very cheezy and over-the-top. One must make their way through all of it to enjoy the whole thing.

Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV series, not movie): It's too bad no one talks about this much anymore. What a great series.

Giant Robo: My favourite, that hardly anyone has actually seen. It's good through and through.

The End of Evangelion: Perfect ending that a lot of people just didn't take the time to understand.

GaoGaiGar and GaoGaiGar FINAL GGG: This is one of my favourite shows. It's just great, and that's all I've got to say.

Astroboy 2003: An unfortunate victim to the 4Kids attack.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: Just came out in japan, so it's hard to say just yet.

GunBuster: Hideaki Anno's first (and arguably best) work, a fantastic shoujo/mech anime from the late 1980s.

Overrated:

InuYasha: As many have said... it's just boring and repetetive.

Gundam SEED: I'm not even going to bother with this one. It's just too easy.

Fullmetal Alchemist: I admit I think the manga is one of the best out today, but the anime, while starting off well, just ends up being one of the most negative and plot-holled series' I've seen. Plus, it's one of the first anime I've ever seen that was really good at tricking people into thinking it was good.

The End of Evangelion: To those who got it, it is not some life-changing experience. And yes, it is still awesome.

Tenchi Muyo Anything: Meh, I never liked this one save the first movie. That was cool.

FLCL: I like this show, but it's not that funny, at all.

Excel Saga: AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!1!!!!!!!!111111111

Samurai Champloo; Yeah, it's okay, but totally NOT the magnum opus everyone was expecting.

Trigun: I love Trigun, believe me (except for that emo Legato), but most of the episodes are poorly-animated filler. I guess in the end the good episodes are worth it, at least.

AHHH ! Thank goodness I am NOT the only one with the over-rated stuff XD !

Overrated:
1.INUYASHA : Sorry Inu-lovers, after episode 34,095,349,508,490,583 it got a little repetitive.
2.Evangelion : I know we're not supposed to discuss this, but I think it's ok to list it?
3.One Piece : .........Come on ?
4. Full Moon wo Sagashite : Good, but freaked out about too much.
5. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne : Cheesssyyyyy @.@

Underrated:
1. Flame of Recca : MANGA. NOT ANIME D:
2. Land of the Blindfolded : Very good clean manga that almost gets no recognition. It's drawn very well.
3. Kyo Kara Maoh! : Good anime, not many people talk about it.
4. Spiral :Very interesting anime, though doesn't end D:
5. The Gokusen : Hilarious XD
6. MAR : CUTE <3
7. Peacemaker : For Yeito >>;
8. x/1999 : <3 !!!11!!!11!112

OK, so far here are the top five anime/manga with the most votes for underrated and overrated:

Underrated:
(1) and (2) tie-Haibane Renmei and Flame Of Recca
(3) to (6)-I know there was supposed to only be five, but it was a four-way tie: Monster, Spriggan, Paranoia Agent, and Air

Overrated:
(1) Inu-Yasha
(2) Ruroni Kenshin
(3) Full Metal Alchemist
(tie for 4, 5, and beyond) Fruits Basket, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Trigun

Overrated:
-Inuyasha - same reason everyone else gave.
-Princess Mononoke/Spirited Away - fine movies, but not worth all the hype. I actually found "Castle in the Sky" to be much better (and it actually made more sense).
-FMA (anime, not manga) - same reason Josh gave.
-Naruto - fine at first, but then it reached fillers (and the manga keeps going up and down). Too many fans seem to worship this series.
-Nadesico - uh, I don't get the hype. The whole stretching-arm thing was cool, but that's all I see in it.

Underrated:
-One Piece - please explain to me how this is "overrated." The American version was trashed, so few are willing to give the true series a chance (which is surprisingly good if you give it time).
-Digimon - come on, people. I know alot of you probably started out on this, and there's no reason to just toss it aside.

Actually, I'm being reminded of a discussion on another site, how as soon as a series goes mainstream, alot of fans suddenly turn around and hate the series they liked. It seems that as soon as alot of n00bs get into it, they just don't care for anymore. Some of these listed as "overrated" are still good, but those that saw it had already heard so much they just didn't care for it anymore.

Aw, c'mon guys, Inuyasha was on nearly every list.... Stupid fangirls, making it seem better than it really is. You're ruining it! Anyways, I don't watch enough anime to really add my input.

Either way, still ALOT of people into the orginal. Here it's HUGE, and in Japan, it's even bigger... I mean I heard there were store FLOORS dedicated to selling One Piece merchandice @_@... no, of course it's not overrated.

All I can say is any anime that airs on TV = overrated. Any landmark movie (Akira, GitS etc) = overrated (at least with how they talk about them in mags like when I used to get Anime Insider :/). Anything else = underrated^^

I shall Edit my List as time goes by

OVERRATED:
Spirited Away

WELL RATED:
Howl's Moving Castle
Azumanga Daioh

UNDERRATED:

Yakitate!! Japan
Monster
Paranoia Agent

BobtheDuck made an interesting statement in regards to Piano (which I still have yet to watch) but I think it is applicable to all the anime we are discussing here:

Bobtheduck wrote: "underwatched" rather than "underrated")

A lot of the things which are underrated are just undewatched... because if more people saw them then they would become more appropriately accepted and rated.

These ratings also have to do with personal taste/background, etc.

NARUTO!!!! (Sure I like the show, but COME ON! It's not that great!)

Bleach (I never saw it, but if you go to an expo and most of the attendees cosplay as Bleach characters before the show is ever licensed, we've got a problem there.)

Uh, that's kinda seems like saying a bunch of Star Wars fans who sit outside a theater days before it comes out means it's overrated (well, maybe the new ones were, but...).

Popular doesn't = "overrated". o_O

Point taken... I hereby withdraw my comment about Bleach...

Although... I never thought the Star Wars thing you mentioned wasn't a problem, too... Granted... if I were allowed the time, I would have been right there with them. Problem? Maybe... but I'm okay with that at least. ^^
