Do you find yourself paying more attention when watching subbed anime?

Mel Gibson once said the reason he made The Passion in Arabic was because reading the subtitles would make you contemplate what's happening. Is this true for you with subbed anime?

I think it sorta depends on the anime. Like comedies i don't pay alot of attention either way but with Rahxephon i am gonna rewatch it with subs and i'll be paying more attention

Well...what exactly do you mean? When watching it subbed, you pay more attention to the actual subs. When watching it dubbed, you pay more attention to what's going on...so I'm going to say no.

I would essentially agree with that. But either way, if the anime is one in which things happen slowly, I tend to look away at times (because I've either read the subtitle long before the person has finished speaking or I don't need to watch the screen because nothing is changing).

[Mostly] yes. If I haven't seen a subbed anime before/often, I generally pay as close attention as possible, I don't speak Japanese, so am lost if I don't pay attention. If it is a dub that I haven't seen, I don't have to pay as close attention, because even without looking I can at least understand the language. heh. ^^;
I do find that I pay more attention to the words than the show, if there are subs; but the distraction is hardly ever worth mentioning.

Only as far as comparing the translation of the sub with the translation of the dub.
I have found so far that there isn't much difference,translation wise between a particulair dub or sub.

I always try to watch things subtitled. I always always leave closed captioning on my television. I also always turn on subtitles as much as possible. Yes, including movies in english. Incase I don't hear what someone says on a show, It'll be there for me to read

It really depends for me...
Using Spirited Away as an example I watched it first w/subs and was... pretty confused (think it might have been the translation though) but rewatching it in english, I picked up a lot more.
With stuff like RahXephon, simply rewatching it (both times with subs) is enough to get ALOT more than I did the first time. Watching it a second time, I don't even remember them saying "Ixtli" THAT often!
Still, whether subbed or in english, I have the dendency to miss stuff still and "daydream" etc :/ I do it ALOT more with reading actually^^

Well, I'm the only one who said no, because I find it hard to pay attention to everything when your eyes are glued to the bottom of the screen for the most part. I don't think this question is best answered to a simple yes or no. :/
