Looks like Katsuhiro Otomo's gamble paid off. This was the most expensive anime movie to date.

I just finished watching it. I didn't know of the hype surrounding it. I did know it's been in development for years though. I really enjoyed it. Sure it didn't have quite the 'heart' of a Miyazaki film but for a sci-fi action, adventure film it was great!
I loved the animation, music, steampunk environment, story, characters and most of the voices were good also. Didn't really go for the main character's voice though, sounded a bit girly. Very fast paced and a complex plot I may have to watch again.
I noticed similarities with Metropolis, Last Exile and Nausicaa but I guess many anime have that nowadays. The imagination of the movie blew me away.

9/10

XD well the reason for that is that the lead chars voice actor was a girl. At least it was in the states i don't think it would been changed.

Yes, I realise that. But 13 year old boys still sound a bit more 'masculine.'

I loved this movie! I don't think the Bad Religion part is really that offensive though. You forgot to mention Otomo's other movies.

Obviously you haven't heard many 13 year old boys. ;)

Either that, or boys get masculine voices a lot earlier in Australia than they do in the US. o.o;;

I though it was really good but I thought the main character's voice was wrong-- the accent kept coming off as Scottish instead of English.

I always thought this movie is fearful. It not only has all times worst sound actor, but the drawing style is not amazing and the story asperity.

The animation was wonderful and the voice acting was pretty good, but those don't make an engaging story.
I've tried watching it a 2nd and 3rd time, but man... it was like... boring.

I think the whole concept of Steamboy was awesome amd especially when I found out the actress who played rogue in x-men was the voice of the main character I think it was awesome but that's just me

[quote="Nate (post: 875862)"]Obviously you haven't heard many 13 year old boys. ]

Don't joke, Nate, everyone knows cow's milk makes Americans go through puberty 10 years early... If I hadn't drank a lot of milk all my life, I would have ended up 25 before I started... Actually, it would have been a bit embarrassing, but my life actually would have been much easier until now if that were the case, but I digress...

Steamboy was ok. Still felt it oversimplified a couple things, just like a lot of anime do, and then over dramatized those very things, but it was well put together... I have to say, also, the narrative got confusing at places, particularly toward the beginning.

I actually enjoyed Steamboy, although many people in my college 3D animation classes were turned off by the idea that a female actress (Anna Paquin) was playing the role of a young boy. I also think my classmates were more of a fan of the classic Akira.

It's great to see there are some people out there who liked it just as I did because I have been made fun of because I said that I enjoyed this anime title.
