Officially, it was Ranma 1/2, although as a kid I watched Robotech and Voltron and didn't really think of them as "anime."

I watched Transformers and Thundercats when I was younger, but the first real anime that I watched was Iria: Zeiram the Animation on the Sci-Fi Channel (they used to show anime on Saturday mornings; unfortunately, they stopped).

Yeah, that's when I got hooked too. I had really liked Sailor Moon before that, but really didn't understand the concept of exclusive Japanese anime. I liked Sailor Moon because it reminded me of the art that I'd look at inside the Zelda manuals.
But my first serious anime was Iria. Second was something like ... 8 Man something something (it was pretty weird) and third was Vampire Hunter D. Although all of those animes were gory and a little scary, they made me like anime even more (which is odd, because I'm not a big gore/blood splashing everywhere person at all.) To this day, Iria remains my favorite anime.

My "baby" sister is a Sailor Moon fan, but I suspect it's not actually her first either, since she and I watched much of the same television shows.
I keep telling her to sign up here ... but unlike me, she 1) studies and 2) has other things to do

Star Blazers... me and a friend of mine would watch it every day. That show ROCKED!
Sadly that came from a time when there was almost no Anime market in this country, I had no idea it was even from Japan.

Actually Gypsy, Iria was one of the first anime I really remember seeing. I wish I'd gotten to see more of it...-_- (last fifteen minutes, blah) It was on Sci-Fi (man, why don't they carry more anime movies? Grah...). Also, I saw a lot of Galaxy Express 999. I guess the first series I followed was 8th MS Team, followed closely by Outlaw Star (cut of course... )

Speed Racer, that was my very first anime that I ever saw. I would stay up all night on fridays when I was like 3 and 4 to see Speed Racer. Although I did not know that it was anime, I loved it.
Also one of my first was Transformers, knowing that it was an anime, it didn't really hook me at all. Well really got me hooked was Samurai Pizza cat's and Dragonball Z.

Heaven's Cloud, are you Moses now?
Nice.
I don't know if this counts as an anime, but I remember watching Speed Racer and Kimba when I was little. The first time I watched anime where I knew I was watching anime was probably Sailor Moon.

Technically, I saw a few episodes of DBZ, but I didn't consider it anime back in 7th grade. Nor was I all that interested. But my first true, addicting anime was Ronin Warriors. First I thought it was stupid, but for some reason it held my attention long enough to keep me coming back. After it went off the air (thankfully not before I made tapes), Gundam Wing...after that I was hooked.

If Voltrn counts, my first was Voltron, like others back before I even knew what anime was. Then I had a friend send me VHS tapes of Ranma 1/2 and Oh! My Goddess my freshman or sophmore year of college. I guess that would be the first "official" anime I watched.

My first anime? Hmmmmmmm.
Technically it was Pokemon several years back, although Digimon was what got me really interested in it.
Don't know if it counts as anime but I remember seeing some eps of Beast Wars too.

Come to think of it, I think Superbook was technically the first anime I ever saw but back then I didn't know it was anime.

Superbook is seriously anime? I didn't know that.
Animenfo has no info on it.
Anyways. The one anime that probably pulled me in was Gundam Wing which I saw on cartoon network several years ago. The whole giant robot mecha thing appealed to me very much at the time. As I became a more seasoned otaku, I began to like different things, mainly shoujo and romance titles. My favourite anime is probably Kanon, which drove me to tears the first time I watched it. I also thoroughly enjoyed Magic Knight Rayearth, believe it or not. ^-^

> Superbook is seriously anime? I didn't know that.
There's a Superbook thread around here in which I (believe I) posted an extract from the blurb in the Anime Encyclopedia, but to make a short post shorter, it basically states that the original wasn't made with any apparent religious impetus, merely to cash in on the Bible's unassailable status as a "worthy international bestseller" (in the reviewer's words). When bought and dubbed for the USA by Christian Broadcast Network, it was significantly rewritten for a more evangelical audience, and much of its actual origins were (probably intentionally) hidden.
