Okay, I want to know why people thought the ending of Fullmetal Alchemist was good, or for a harder one, why anyone throught the movie was good.

I agree... just started for the past few weeks up here in Canada, and it's alright and different in all, but I scratch my head at the hype of it all :/

I first got into it before it was licensed and all, and I thought that it was a pretty good adventure series... then dragged on...^^ and on...^^ till finally I only really watched it for the new op/end songs :/ When I realized it ended on ep 167 I'm like "Finally an ending!" and was I ever wrong^^

I'm adding in Cowboy Bebop. Overrated non-stop talk about shows annoy me before I even get a chance to see it :/ Saw the movie which was concidered pretty good and thought "...this is what people were raving about?" Trigun I also haven't seen, but also don't understand the hype *shrugs*

This thread is an exercise in futility. If somebody doesn't get the appeal of a certain title, all the explanations in the world aren't going to change their mind.

i never saw the big deal about kenshin to be honest. maybe i just need to see more. i've seen the first 13 episodes and i thought it was ok but nothing spectacular. does it get better later on or something?

I bought the first box set for Kenshin...wow...back when it first came out, I believe. I haven't, or have rarely, watched it since then. It sits on my shelf collecting dust, and I haven't really had much of an urge to see the rest of it. It wasn't bad, but I can't understand people thinking it's the best anime in the world.

There are a lot of titles I never understood the hype to, especially the movies:
Akira
Metropolis
Blood
Ghost in the Shell
Cowboy Bebop the Movie (a big dissapointment after the series)
Vampire Hunter D
Spriggan (Let's rip off the Spoiler to Secret of Blue Water!)
Princess Mononoke
Jin Roh

These were all titles that were hyped as the epitomy of what Japan had to offer in terms of art, animation and storytelling, but they all struck me very substandard in all three categories and I think, were they American movies, would probably have been long forgotten.

Uh....virtually anything from Shounen Jump. I can't stand Naruto and such things,...yet there are tons of people out there that love it. I just can't bring myself to understand. :shake:

Fruits Basket is okay but people obsess over it almost as much as when Tom Cruise was on Oprah. I mean LOOK AT SCARY MOVIE 4!!! I find it well-written but it`s like cultic.

Also Kaemmerite, I`ve always wondered what was the deal with with "!!!111!!!"

Even missprints can get popular.

EDIT: FORGET FRUITS BASKET!

POKEMON!

I don't understand the hype with miyazaki in general! He's just way overrated. Yes he kind of change the views of anime in this country. But so what? His stories go too fast and just seem cheesy. Howl's Moving Castle was okay, just... so random.

Satoshi Kon is a MUCH better director than Hao Miyazaki. Perfect Blue was an amazing movie that was absolutely mindblowing.

Yes. I agree with that. And because of that Pokemon craze that hit back then, everyone thinks that all anime is all like that. When I said that I liked anime/manga at my high school, someone came up to me later on in the day and the talk went like this:

SOMEONE: "So...I heard you liked anime."

ME: "Um, yeah."

SOMEONE: "Oh! So you like Pokemon!? I love Pokemon! *obvious sarcasm*"

And then, back in 8th grade at my middle school, I had a pretend job interview with a professional for a grade. While we talked, anime was somehow brought up ( I think I said that one of my interests was anime on the fake resume  ). She then brought on a talk that went like this:

INTERVIEWER: "So...I heard you like anime."

ME: "Yes."

INTERVIEWER: "Oh. So you mean things like Dragon Ball Z?

Sigh. Most people don't know what anime truly is. It doesn't matter though.

I agree. Satoshi Kon's movies are better than Miyazaki. I think the only thing I saw that I didn't like was Paranoia Agent, but maybe I was expecting too much after the movies

Haha! I would agree with that. Lots of people who don't know what anime really is must look upon those Miyazaki films as a mindblower compared to what they thought was anime in general(Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh!, DBZ).

'And I've got to see Perfect Blue one of these days.

Akira: not sure :/ I didn't find it overly amusing (even if it WAS one of the earlier works)

Metropolis: ...not sure :/ animation was a big thing in it... but I wasn't overly impressed by the whole thing.

Blood (assuming The Last Vampire and not +): yeah it was very short, and and unfullfilling series :/ I just know that it was one of those landmark animation things.

Ghost in the Shell: The animation was a huge thing when it was made, and the story was pretty unique at the time. I was expecting it to be different when I watched it, but it wasn't bad...

Princess Mononoke: This was one of my first non-TV animes, and it having things like wolves^^ and an intriguing story, and amusing characters... I thought it was neat because it was so different^^

Easy, easy...

InuYasha: Boys like Dragonball Z, and this is Dragonball Z for girls.

Cowboy Bebop: A great Western series about Cowboys versus the Galactic Indian Menace.

Rurouni Kenshin: A witty social commentary on dull blades? Perhaps some allegory for puberty?

Akira: Despite its horrid animation, the film got its success from the merchandising of the giant robots.

Metropolis: Duh, it's a Fritz Lang movie, you silly geese!

Blood: Um, because we need blood to live.

Ghost in the Shell: A good documentary about ghosts inside turtle shells.

Cowboy Bebop the Movie (a big dissapointment after the series): But you must admit the final battle between John Wayne and Sitting Bull was well drawn, despite the characters' flying through the air.

Vampire Hunter D: The name says it all, man. It's got a vampire who hunts down the letter D.

Spriggan (Let's rip off the Spoiler to Secret of Blue Water!): Because Spriggan is a pure, shut-your-brain-off popcorn movie with excellent animation, a great soundtrack, and Christian Bale stars as Howl in it.

Princess Mononoke: It's the anime equivalent of The Princess Bride!

Jin Roh: The followup to Samurai Champloo's Jin, as he learns what it takes to be a great baseball player.

Shounen Jump titles: Jumping is quite popular with tweens and video-game mascots, you know.

RahXephon: This is Hideaki Anno's magnum opus, in which teenagers battle evil invaders, angst, and listen to classical Beethoven music.

Fruits Basket: A healthy mix of healthy fruit and poor grammar.

Hayao Miyazaki: After doing Toy Story and A Bugs' Life, how could one not enjoy his films?

Pokemon: I have never heard of this, but kids DO enjoy poking.

Paranoia Agent: Oh yeah, I really liked this one because it had a lot of cool medical drama, and Tenma was a good protagonist.

I don't understand the hype behind the first VHD movie, myself. The second one was better in all respects. Oh well, got to be glad for the first one, or else the second one probably wouldn't have been made.

My other picks are Wolf's Rain and Witch Hunter Robin, which for some reason my sister and I both keep. I keep WHR for the box, personally.

Wolf's Rain: Vash was a good character. I thought he was pretty multi-layered.

WHR: Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven, and Beast Boy team up to save the world from witches!

1. That's Monster. Not Paranoia Agent

2. Monster is most certaintly not a medical drama :thumb: it has a lot of medical elements though.

3. There isn't much hype about Monster, seeing as not many people have even heard of it.

I also don't really get the hype about Miyazaki films. I mean, Howl's Moving Castle was a fun movie but I bet the book is better. The other ones I've seen have been nice visually, except the characters tend to all look the same.

Akira had some really nice animation for its day. You have to remember that it's like 20 years old now, and back then Japan didn't exactly spend loads of money and time on animated feature films. That's probably why everyone made such a big deal out of it. That and it was probably the most violent and bizarre animated movie of its day. (I still hate it, though.)

Personally, I don't get the hype about Perfect Blue. Maybe I need to see it again, but I just wasn't really that impressed.

Same thing with Ghost in the Shell. It didn't even get interesting until it was almost over.

I didn't notice any hype with perfect blue. A lot of people don't like it because of the nudity and sexual situations. I still love it though. It was an interesting tale.

I guess I am weird, I found the Bebop movie better then *most* the episodes of the series. I own both the series and the movie, and I just really enjoyed Vincents character. Then again, I had no hype going into it. I saw the movie before I saw the series.

I don't advise this movie for minors. It actually had to be cut to receive an R rating in America. The DVD is the uncensored version (I don't think the R-rated print is even available anymore). It contains full frontal nudity, sexual situations (though not pornographic) and graphic violence. While it is an excellent anime (one of the few I would call a classic), it really is one that minors should have their parents check out first at the very least (It's not one I would let my kids watch if I had any).

hmmm

I don't see the hype about FLCL...or Paranoia Agent, or for that matter most of the anime on Toonami..

Maybe I am growing out of shounen anime? hmm...
