I was at a movie rental place and saw 'Samurai Showdown' on sale. I looked at the back of it, and it was talking about the 'evil' Shirou Amakusa. Wasn't he one of the first Japanese Christians?

From Wikipedia:
Shiro Tokisada Amakusa (天草四郎時貞 Amakusa Shirō Tokisada) is a video game character from SNK Playmore's Samurai Shodown series of fighting games.
...
Amakusa led a Christian rebellion in the Shimabara region. The Bakufu army crushed his revolt and executed him. He made a deal with the demon Ambrosia, and returned to the mortal world 150 years later, possessing the body of Shinzo Hattori, the son of Hanzo Hattori.

Does that help?

Also remember that in the historical context the Shogunate was pretty anti-Catholic.
Most of the Christians that were marytred were Catholic.

Yep. Including, ironically enough, Japan's patron saint: Francis Xavier.
