The love of Fruits Basket

I've often wondered why people were so in love with Fruits Basket. Truth be told, I didn't really know the storyline, and all the pictures I saw of it didn't really make it look all that interesting. Well, thanks to mechana2015 and his introducing me to a webpage that has a ton of anime episodes that you can watch for free and not have to download, I have now become one of the many who love Fruits Basket.
I would have to say that I was hooked after episode one. This was quite interesting actually, considering it was subtitled, and if you ask those who know me, I absolutely hate subtitles. To me they just deter from the watching of the movie. I usually will not watch an anime at all if it isn't dubbed. But, for some reason, FB had me hooked. The art, the characters, the story, the dialogue, you name it, I loved it. Then the second episode was in english, and I got to hear that. Well, needless to say, I got hooked even more (if that was possible) when I realized that the voice of Shigure was the same guy who voices Kurama, who is one of my favorite characters from Yu Yu Hakusho (in addition to Koenma and Hiei). Then I find out that the guy who is the voice of Yuske is also the voice of Haru. So now I'm completely hooked. I'm quite glad that the website had the entire series, so I can sit down and watch it. Right now I'm on episode 10 and have no intention of stopping. Good thing KH2 still has a little over 5 days to go. XP
So now I have a feeling I am going to be adding another anime to my collection (definately not going to be telling mom... she thinks I'm weird enough already for being into anime
) Well, back to the show. Yuki and Kyo are waiting!

If you think the anime is good the manga is even better! But yes, the anime was good.

Don't tell anyone...but I LOVE Fruits Basket! I started with the DVD's at my library, then I moved on to the manga! You ihave no idea how embarrassing it is for a 20 Year old, 6'1 black dude to admit that he likes an anime like Fruits Basket!

I don't think that's anything to be embarassed about! I think it's acutally pretty cool. I mean, if guys only liked the anime with mechs and battles with no cuties stuff, how boring would that be?
You get a million kudo points from me for liking Fruits Basket! Go you!

Thanks! Now when I go to the library and slap down my massive pile of books, I'll proudly have my Fruits Basket Manga and DVD's at the top of the pile! Speaking of Mechs...I just watched one of the Gundam series from my library...the one with the "Shining Finger" Gundam...one question--WHY?!?!

I was scepitcle about watching it at first, but once I started watching (yes I know this is a weird way to decide to watch an anime) AMV's of Fruits Basket, I had to see it! So I found a site that allowed me to watch them, and I fell in love from the first episode I watched (got a little out of order, I saw episode four first then went back and watched episode one on). Now I'm currently purchasing the manga for my reading pleasure. My brother thinks I"m weird for liking it. I didn't expect him to like it though, it is a shojo... but he looked through one and said Yuki looked like he was on crack
_O: because of his large eyes. Now, I'll admit when I first saw Yuki I thought "Crap! Those eyes are HUGE!" but I've come to love that about Yuki. It just makes him... him!
Anyway, my brother is weird... so ignore him.

Actually, it was Tohru's eyes that kinda freaked me out...just go to the title menu on the second DVD and you'll see what I mean. But once you get used to it, they're really quite cute!
On another note...
::Jumps into Fantasy Dreamer's arms and grins:: MOMMY! I missed you mommy!

I think that question can be said for most of the Gundams. I think I stayed away from getting really into that series on purpose. Some of the Gundams are just, well, interesting to say the least.

I am also a big fan of Fruits Basket, and I also have the problem with my parents thinking it's a little strange. I still find it strange that I actually decided to watch the show in the first place. The only reason I picked it up is that a girl in my Japanese class a couple years back had a notebook with Fruits Basket characters on it and I was curious what Fruits Basket was because the characters looked cute, so I read about it and then watched the anime. Now it's a favorite of mine.
As for my parents, my sister and I watch the same shows, and my parents are fine with her liking anime (although my Dad thinks it's a little strange), but the idea that I like anime is a really odd concept for Dad. If my friends (for the most part) think anime in general is wierd and Fruits Basket is a massive overdose on cuteness and large eyes, I can't imagine what would happen if my Dad found out I like (and own) Fruits Basket.

There has been quite a few people saying that the manga is really good. Looks like I'm going to have to find a place close that carries a cool selection of manga. The stores that did just closed for some reason or another. Maybe I'll actually start the manga and finish it. That would be a first.

My mom is the one who doesn't get why I watch anime. My sister will sometimes watch shows with me and like them, but only after she complains for about five minutes. My dad just doesn't care one way or the other, since I don't watch any of my shows around him. Sometimes I wish my mom wouldn't get so weird about it, but I'm used to it by now.
I do find it a bit strange that she doesn't mind when I play video games at the house... she actually was getting interested and helping me when I was playing Kingdom Hearts. That was definately a first.

I sorta disagree. I am ashamed of liking Fruits basket because my social life would come to a crashing halt if people found out I liked it. So, I keep it quiet.
There is no small action aspect like there a small girly aspects in mech and battles. FB is COMPLETLY GIRLY! No male aspects.

I'm with Grubb on this one, Tom. We're already down in the hole for being anime fans and gamers, j00 know?
I'm an unabashed fan of Fruits Basket. Yeah, it's not exactly Akira or Princess Mononoke, or some blood-drenched guy anime, but heck if it ain't a lot funnier.

Ah another has come to find the joy of Fruba! I recommend the manga as well cause it goes deeper in the story and IMHO is better ^^

First of all, you don`t know a thing about my life.
Zilch, I don`t go boasting that I like video games. If people ask me if I`ve played one I`ll say yes but I`m not going to share it to the world.
And you guys completly misunderstood what I meant. People will get the hunch that i am a homosexual, not an anime/manga geek. Just look at the flowery, girl-usually-on-the-cover-and-if-not just-surrounded-by-fowers-atmosphere and not to mention the girly title.
I keep the books hidden so no one will think I am a homosexual. It makes perfect sense. I didn`t want to get to deep into it but I`ll say it here:
FRUITS BASKET IS OKAY AND I FIND IT ENJOYABLE BUT I AM IN NO MEANS A FAN!!!!!!!!

I think it more likely they would think you had a crush one of the girls in the manga or something. If all the manga had pictures of guys on the cover with the flowers, people might be concerned, but a guy looking at something with a girl on the cover is less likely to cause concern. They might think it's strange, but I doubt they would assume you were homosexual. Besides, most guys like something girly, just like most girls like some stuff that's considered "guy stuff", so you'd probably be OK.

Try being a 46 (at the time) year old male with a graying beard and taking Fruits Basket to the checkout. Fortunately, I had a very perseptive girl running the register who said, "Oh, your daughter will love this." I quickly agreed with her. While I have enjoyed it a number of times however, my daughter has yet to see it.
My daughter did come home the other night and informed me that she was looking for a new manga title to start reading. She said that she was choosing between Fruits Basket and Love Hina. Knowing what my wife's opinion of Love Hina would be, I quickly steered her towards Fruits Basket.

That would be even worse. A crush on a drawing?

Yet another reason why online shopping wins.

Yeah, 99% of my anime and manga purchaces are online now. Mostly for price reasons. Actually, if I'm not so embarrassed at my age to help staff and be seen at an anime convention, I shouldn't be too embarrassed to purchase titles from a store.
To tell the truth, I miss some of the interaction I use to get in the anime section at places like Best Buy. Just this past Christmas I was browsing and a woman about my age was trying to make a purchase for her son. She was buying the Evangelion movie pack and asked me some opinions about it. I then was able to point out some other titles her son might like. It's kind of fun to get that, "You know about this stuff?" reaction from people.
