Before you make a thread, be sure you browse around to ensure that you're putting it in the right forum. I know choosing a forum can be a little tricky at first, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. With that said, I went a head and moved your thread to the anime forum. :P

Whoops, thanks! I thought I did put it in the Anime Forum. Dang. I keep forgetting to sign up for my own threads!

Is this FLCL, or the related? I'm not really familiar with either the anime or the manga, but I've only heard of it.

I've only read the FLCL manga. I could never understand anything of what was going on and the art was horrible. I assume the anime is a lot better?

Most people I've talked to loved FLCL, at least in my community. Generally people can't understand a thing that is happening, although the extra features of the DVDs explain a lot. I thought the anime was okay, and the art seemed good to me. It was rather fun to pick out references to other things too, for some reason I just loved the Lupin III opening.

btw, it's 6 episodes

I liked the art in the manga. The anime in my opinion is much easier to follow than the manga both of which are still very hard to follow, but if you watch the directors commentary it's much easier to understand.

It is but you have to watch it over and over again to understand parts

Ok. I have the boot-leg version from Hong Kong (my friend gave it to me), so while I can't answer any extra's questions I'd be glad to answer anything about the Anime. *its kinda cheep though, I want to get the special edition 3rd cd*

I hated the art in the manga....so I agree with you , ST! I was like "what is going on?! A child could draw better than this!"

the anime...is stilll confusing to me, and i never have gotten the point of it....not to mention...a few scenes..just...plain freaked me out!

This is one of those animes that's just unlogically enjoyable. You can't really tell people why you love it, you just do or don't. There's never an inbetween, it seems.

Personally, I think Fooley Cooley is more fun to say.

If you go by which name is most fun to say, I'll always go with "Furi Kuri" in the same way they say it in the commercial break one time. Meaning I mimic their tones and such.

Well, as far as I know it doesn't actually have a meaning. But there are of course multiple meanings implied/derived from it. Also, I think it tried to explain the sound effect of kneeding (I have no clue how to spell this) bread dough. I think that was "kuri kuri" though I'm not sure.

I love FLCL as well - both anime and manga. I just felt I needed to defend the artwork in the FLCL manga, while it may not be as "professional" or "clean" as other manga-ka as some of you have suggested. It is nonetheless art in itself and therefore holds merit. It's kinda like the painting that are scribbles. To you, it may look like a paper with scribbles but to someone who might actually get something from it; it may be life-changing - even if it's for that one specific person the artisian doesn't know.

So in defense of that art style, it is a type of art in it's own right.

As for what Furi Kuri means, it is the sound of kneeding bread dough like Doe Johnson said but from a perverted/sexual perspective.

There is actually many meanings. In the beginning of the show in the hospital Haruko says "FLicktonic Kliptic waver syndrome". After that she says "FL. CL" Also if you have the subtitles on and are looking at when Haruko first comes to Naotas house his dad says "Fondling around (furi furi), Fooling around (furi Curi), Fooly Cooly!"

By this argument, then, anything is good art and there is no difference between a child's scrawlings and the work of a master. I believe there has to be some standard to which an artist is held for his or her work to be considered good. And there is certainly something admirable, IMO, about virtuosity.

I would also debate the value of paintings that are just scribbles, but that would be an entirely different discussion.

I would have been willing to overlook what I believe to be sub-par art, but my real issue was that it was nearly impossible to understand anything that went on in the manga. I read both books and I honestly still could not tell you what exactly happened. That, in my opinion, is not good writing. Art of any kind is meant to be expression. If it is an expression that is so obtuse and confusing that most people have difficulty understanding it, then I do not think it performs its purpose well.

The phrase "furi kuri" (in any of its variations) doesn't mean anything. All the explanations offered through the course of the show are jokes and straw men. It has no meaning, it just is.
