from ANN...

"4Kids Licenses Pretty Cure (2006-02-24 17:01:31)
Al Kahn, CEO of 4Kids Entertainment, announced at the ICv2 Anime & Manga panel New York Comic Convention that 4Kids has licensed Pretty Cure, Bandai's long-running magical girl series. The show will apparently run this fall on TV; no further details are available at this time."

Huh, after getting rid of Pokemon, and not even being able to get the second season of Tokyo Mew Mew, I was surprised they had a budget to do this :/

Looks to be a typical younger girl mahou shoujo series.

What are they trying to do?

Are they going to turn 4kids TV into a magical girls network?

In a word, yes. I'm glad I stopped watching this crap after One Piece left.

Yeah, no kidding! WOULD IT KILL THEM TO LICENS A MECHA SERIES FOR ONCE IN THERE LIVES??!!!!!!! I mean, yeah, they'd definitely butcher it, be it'd still entertaining. But oooooohhh nooooo, it has guns in it. Ahhhhhhh, 4kids sucks.

*eyebrow twitch* Oh, no. I can see it now: screechy, valley girl accents, ludicrous script edits, inexplicable dialogue changes, and (oh, I hope not) entire episodes missing. Grrr.

Well, no...what I really meant was that 4kids seems to be going overboard trying to attract more of a female audiance. Futari wa Pretty Cure is their next target after Mew Mew flopped(which apparantly got decent ratings for the new episodes but no one was watching the reruns.)
Pretty Cure gets as high ratings as Naruto does in Japan so the only ones who could really afford it would be 4kids and perhaps Funimation.

4kids is scrounging around for another franchise that they can turn into another U.S. phenomenon like Pokemon and Yugioh considering they no longer do the former and the latter is ending soon. And One Piece wasn't exactly "the big success" that they were hoping for, doing better on Toonami than 4kidsTV.

At any rate, they are probably going to go for something more shonen next, like Beet the Vandal Buster.

Well that's what happens when you take an awesome series and strip it of everything that made it awesome in the first place.

G.I. Joe has guns and 4Kids MADE that. o.O

Can't these people just choose NOT to sell it to certain companies or what?

I don't know if the companies know which American companies are good or not...

This is getting ridiculious! Why are they buying all this sparkly, glitter-crusted stuff when they have perfectly good anime out there ripe and ready for the picking with no cuts needed whatsoever?! Don't we have enough witches, yellow stars and moons on the air as is? WHY?!?!

Excuse me...

Yes, I think that the Japanese companies have a choice of who to sell things to. Remember Kojima's comments about Uwe Boll doing a Metal Gear movie? "Absolutely not! I don't know why Uwe Boll is even talking about this kind of thing. We've never talked to him. It's impossible that we'd ever do a movie with him."

Given that, I'm pretty sure that companies have a say in who gets the rights to their properties. Perhaps the company that makes Pretty Cure was hopeful that it wouldn't be destroyed? Or maybe they're not familiar with how 4Kids does things. I dunno.

I don't think ANYONE in Japan knows what 4Kids does. If they did, they would have stopped having any connections with them long ago (unless they're just as greedy as 4Kids is...).

Of course they are. Anime is a business, it's about profit.

I hope not. That's the last thing we need. I just saw your website about the "One Piece" cuts, and if 4Kids got their hands on another anime like they did with "One Piece", heaven help us all!

Finally someone notices that!

Unfortunately, yes, it seems that many Japanese companies could be quite as greedy, but at least they make something WORTH our money...

Considering what they did to Tokyo Mew Mews we can probably expect the same sort of result.Let's just be happy that at least they never did Sailor Moon!

Actually, Toei hasn't generally made very competant decisions regarding the American market. Last year or so, they completely flubbed up the R1 releases of Air Master and Slam Dunk when they attempted to release those two series themselves. I'm not sure if they really care who gets their properties as long as they make money off of it.

Well, I don't deny that there are anime companies that are purely interested in making money, but I think there are some creators out there who do feel that their work has integrity, and would not want to see it ruined. Again, Kojima is a good example of this. He knew that Uwe Boll doing a Metal Gear movie would bring shame to his franchise.

If memory serves, Tokyo Mew Mew was quite girly in the first place! What could you cut from an anime like that?!

It's not so much that they cut it, but they wrote bad dialogue, they used entirely too many puns, and the voice acting was sub-par.

Don't forget changing all the character's names and otherwise removing all the references to a Japanese setting. At least they didn't call it Hollywood Mew Mew like the early reports said they would.

One wonders if the original creators are insulted by the american edits and changes the producers in the US impose on their creations? I would imagine they would be pretty ticked off.

I would think name changes they would not be upset with, perhaps they wouldn't even be upset about "Hollywood Mew Mew", considering they called it Tokyo Mew Mew, it kind of has to do with nationalism. They probably wouldn't normally make something set in Hollywood, so I suppose they might understand changing the location, if it is not horribly critical to the plot.

But I think the creators would be most upset by the fact that their anime is being made into a laughing stock, deserving of mockery because of bad dialogue and voice acting.
