CAA: Christian Anime Alliance

I know, I've read the review, but does WHR contain any nasty surprises? Could I sit down and watch this with my brothers without ANY fear of sex, nudity, fanservice, gore, or language(if the review is right about the language, then that's okay for them)?

hmm well i have only watched like one ep. but it was on AS for a while so it shouldnt have to many bad suprises. but then again i dont know. AS is almost capable of showing anything. sorry im not much help

There was no nudity to speak of, and I can't remember any real gore, fanservice of any type, sex, or more than mild language as mentioned in the review. That type of thing just wouldn't fit with the feel of the show itself. If you don't mind your brothers seeing magic used or seeing frightening situations that fit with an anime about someone hunting modern day witches, it would probably be fine. However, as I don't know how old your brothers are I think I should tell you this show is intended for people in their teens, so it probably isn't appropriate if your brothers are younger.

There was no sex, nudity, fanservice, or gore. People got shot and stuff but there was hardly any blood in it. It has mild language and that is about it.

When it was showed on AS, the thing ran uncut.

Wow, no sex or fanservice? This is a gem, lol. And it's interesting? Wow. They should be able to handle the magic. They're only 10 and 11(almost 12), but they can discern between fantasy and reality. The older one will probably think it's stupid BECAUSE of the fantasy in it. That, and it's about a girl. If there's not much blood, that'll be okay. They're allowed to play games with blood, so watching it won't be as bad.

WHR is one of my fav animes!

Puritan and WingZero pretty much said it all.

The animation, music, setting, and storyline is pretty impressive. Its an awesome show!

A must watch if you are a fan of Kari Wahlgren and Crispin Freeman.

I love WHR, so I feel I can criticize it fairly. As far as the listed concerns, totally in the clear except for
[SPOILER] Robin burns a man clean out of existance when she is struggling for her life. The scene is bloodless though. Also, some people mistake Robin for another characters lover and make snide comments and insinuations, but it is absolutely not true. [/SPOILER]
I would also reinforce the warning in the review about bad religion, it can mess with your head if you don't have a strong grounding in your faith.
The anime is a good anime for prompting thought, at least for me. It raises questions on how to treat others when it comes to human dignity, faith in chaotic situations, and how to deal with questionable authority figures among others towards the end of the anime.

Should be noted that the bad religion is directly against Christianity, so it is/can be disturbing.

I know this post comes rather late, but since there was already a "Witch Hunter Robin" thread, I thought I'd give that a shot instead of starting my own.

I've been seriously thinking about buying a volume of WHR. I understand that it starts off kinda slow and picks up about half-way through. I've never seen it (I can't rent it here) and I was wondering if there was a certain volume that would best represent the series (perhaps vol 1 doesn't?). Then I could decide whether I want to collect the whole series. I like darker anime with philosophy, but I like action too. I'm just worried that WHR might be too slow for my tastes. (I watched vol 1 of Serial Experiments Lain and was rather confused and, frankly, a bit bored.)

Any recommendations on a "sampler" volume of WHR?

Well, you COULD buy one volume of it for 20+ plus dollars - OR you could buy the whole series for thirty at Overstock.com. And if you don't like it, you've only spent 10 dollars more and you can give it to a friend or something(or donate it to your local library even).

Overstock.com sure does have a nice price for the complete collection! But alas! I live in Canada and it looks like they don't ship there...

Okaaaaay, well, Amazon has it for ten dollars more than overstock.com and they ship internationally, but still, $120 for all six DVDs... $40 for the whole series.... HMMMMMMM..... Lol. But, it's your choice.
But I mean, what if you find out you ABSOLUTELY love it, and you've spent 20 dollars on a sixth of the anime(no one correct me on this), when you could have bought it for only 40? I think you might die of a broken heart. [/Exaggerating]

I've never seen Series Experiment Lain, so I can't compare, but I wouldn't say WHR is a boring anime at all and I get bored with slow stories quite easily.

RightStuf International is having a Bandai sale right now and you can pick it up at 40% off or $29.99 + shipping. They do ship to Canada. That's where I'll be picking it up.

Which Is Witch?

I don't think it's really a spoiler, but just in case...

[spoiler]Something to bear in mind about WHR is that it tends to be somewhat sympathetic to witches and rather negative about the historic persecution of witches.

In short, if you have a problem with an anime knocking Christianity as the "bad guys", then this probably isn't the show for you.

On the other hand, if you can accept the fact that it's fiction and portrays "the truth from a certain point of view", then you might well find it thought-provoking.[/spoiler]

I don't get that... What is the difference (other than price)? I found these two "collections" on amazon.ca too - Anime Legends Complete Collection and The Complete Collection [6 Discs] The former is $51.99 and the latter is $143.99 but I can't tell why they are so different in price.

I'd take Majic's warning with a grain of salt, Kryptech. From what I've seen in the series, witches aren't usually portrayed all that flatteringly, and in the majority of cases it's a good thing the Chuch seems to have time and agents on its hands to try and capture them first (killing being secondary).

However, I've only seen part of the whole series. Definitely rent anyway, for quality control.

Witch Hunter Robin: Anime Legends Complete Collection is $51.99 and the Witch Hunter Robin: The Complete Collection $143.99 but I can't tell why they are so different in price.

The reason why you see two difference box sets is,


WHR: The Complete Collection came out first and was the first true box set for WHR and the price was higher.

Later, Bandai went back and release some of their box sets. But they sold them under their Anime Legends line and put a cheaper price on them.

Bandai did this line to compete with other anime companies that were re-releasing their animes in box set at lower price.

The anime Legends box set of WHR was relase on Oct 31, 2006. So, its your newer box set.

i am also interested in this anime. actually, i've been planning to try out this anime for quite some time. it seemed interesting, and when the review noted that there was no nudity or sexual content, i knew i had to try it. heard the second half of the series takes some major plot turns and gets real interesting. the first half is basically your typical "monster-of-the-week" thing...

Roy Mustang, thanks for clearing up the collection differences. I don't see any reason now why I'd be opting for the Complete Collection edition!

Yep, that was my thought too.

WHR is decent. Wasn't jumping out of my seat over it, but it's worth a watch. The only thing that comes close to fanservice is Robin's habit of sleeping in the nude. You don't see a thing though, and it isn't even drawn that provocatively or anything.

What I would worry about is how it certainly gives confusing views on Christianity. I haven't seen the show in forever, but I remembered being confused as to whether it was for or against Christianity. Kinda flip-flops and makes some uncomfortable references....
Another thing:
[SPOILER] I wasn't sure if the witches were just genetically engineered humans who pass the gene on to their kids, or if they were actually the type who sold their souls to the devil. (I remember some unnerving reference to "the first god", whatever that meant.) They seemed to imply it both ways....? But yeah...I haven't seen WHR in forever, so I could be getting this completely wrong. ^ ^;; [/SPOILER]

But, none of it bothered me THAT much... Stuff like FMA is probably more controversial, and I like FMA very much.
