AMVs (Anime Music Videos)

I looked and could not find a forum for AMVs on here so I decided to start a thread . . .
DOes anyone here make AMVs? I just made my first one and it went over pretty well I think. I submitted it to one of the conventions and didn't win, but I got alot of positive feedback. Let me know if anyone else is into AMVs! They are a great way to use music and anime to support eachother and get either the music or anime recognition. I have seen some really excellent ones! If you want, most of you probably know, but here is the biggest site for AMVs:
animemusicvideos.org
Go and watch!

Another AMV'er! I am an AMV'er also! I have made approx. ten. Not all of them are listed on animemusicvideos.org, but some are, and one is downloadable, with more to come. Yet I digress.... Anyways, I will definately check out that AMV!

I've been making AMVs since 2002. I've only made 3, but 2 of them have made the finals at Anime Expo 2002 and 2003.
I just finished my 4th video, Shamanic Princess to 'Imaginary' by Evanescence. I almost didn't want to do it because Evanescence videos are becoming like LInkin Park videos; way overused. But I had a unique idea for it, so I decided to.
I've been collecting AMVs for a few years now. I liked AMVs before I even liked anime (or got big into it). I have aprox. 200 AMVs on my computer. If I was to keep every one I download, I'd have close to 1000. But I delete all the ones I don't feel are good.
It was after I went to my first anime convention, Anime Expo 2001, and saw the AMV contest that I was motivated to make my first, which made the finals the next year.

That is my AnimeMusicVideos.org Profile
http://www.orangekitten.com is my website that has all my AMVs plus all my other videos that I make, since I'm a film student ^_~
Nice to see some other AMV creators on this site.

I haven't made any AMV's but if I ever got a chance to I would...It's funny because I'll just be listening to music then anime scenes will pop into my head and I'll make an AMV in my mind...I don't have the software to make a real one though.
Here are a tiny bit of ones that I've thought of.
Chick Magnet by MxPx--Nadesico
August Winterman by Dead Poetic--Evangelion
Running From Me by TrustCompany--Evangelion

You can find AMV's for download on P2P or at anime conventions, it's probably the last legal thing to do on P2P...
Well, that and homemade vids and game previews and movie trailers, but mostly just AMV's...
About Chop suey: Every big anime has probably had that song for an AMV at least once, some more than once...
Also, every song has probably had DBZ for an AMV at least once... I don't watch DBZ AMV's anymore, or Chop Suey AMV's... Both are way too overplayed...
Even though Eva is also overplayed, my fave is the Mentos Commercial and Asuka the Black Knight... You ALL have to check those out!

If want good videos, but don't know where to start, click on the top 30 or any top videos list on the right side (you have to be logged in) to find the most "popular."

What do you need to make an AMV?
PostPosted: Wed Nov 19, 2003 2:43 pm

Anime footage in some form, a capture card if it's not captured allready, editing software such as premiere and/or aftereffects (after effects is more for, well, effects... Which are usefull for making better AMV's like some people have been doing (Check out the Jerry Springer one or "Help" set to Tenchi Muyo to see that one...)

Yeah, even attempting audio in after effects can be a nightmare.
I got an idea for a Princess Nine song to go alone with a Super Chic[k] song this morning. Not sure if the idea will actually go anywhere *pokes it* but we'll see.

While I don't like some of the anime or fanservice clips that you use in your AMVs, (gee, I bet you didn't see that comment coming, huh?
) you have a great deal of talent. Doing the special "hack" on Ed's computer was excellent. Also, you've got quite the edge going on with After Effects. I was really impressed because when I was learning the program, I did the same thing you did - hig res photos & effects set to music. Amazing how you can change a handful of stills and a song clip into something cool, isn't it? Anyway, just though you should know how good they are. (I only had time to watch "Young Felicity" and "A Strange Case of Anime" and your AE learning video.)

That song is sorta depressing, though...

Thanks for the compliment ^_^ Always appreciated!
inkjet1987 wrote:What do you need to make an AMV?
The basics and cheapest would be
. DVD-Rom
. Ripping software from doom9.net
. Editing software - Windows Movie Maker is free but is cuts/dissolves only and fairly cheasy. Premiere is the the most used on the PC (has a slight learning curve). You don't NEED After Effects, you can easily make a good amv without all the fancy effects and manipulation A.E. gives. Plus After Effects has a larger learning curve than Premiere. But once you become an experienced editor, A.E. becomes a very good friend of yours. All you really need to make a good amv is to be creative and know where to place your shots.
For mac users, you can use Imovie which is just like Windows Movie Maker. Final Cut Pro is what I recommend. It is by far much better than Premiere.
You can use a capture card if you want. A decent capture card (ranging from $400 - $2,000) will let you capture analog and digital and can give you certain RealTime effects, eliminating lots of rendering time.
You can use your video card if it has an input too. The only problem with that is sometimes they don't let you capture at full 720x480, and they also have a tendency to drop frames during capture. And many times they will capture with some proprietery codec that your editing software may not know, forcing you to convert them and causing problems.
Then after it's all done and over with, you get to have fun trying to export with the million different compression methods out there. And always export a DV NTSC copy as a master copy. Or export to a mini-dv tape (which is what I do, and that's how I submit them to conventions)
Good luck

I have had a few ideas for a while about using "Suicide is Painless" from M*A*S*H and scenes primarily from "Grave of the Fireflies" I had big plans for it... I need to make a list of all my wild ideas, so I can start prioritizing them... I mean, I doubt I could ever do all the things I wanted to do... But, that is something I'd like to do, anyhow...

If AMV'ing is anything like converting a DVD into a (S)VCD, count me out. It took me maaaany hours to encode a DVD into a usable MPEG, and I had to do it over again because for some reason, it didn't encode the whole thing despite getting the frames right--when watching the MPEG, it gets "cut off" in the middle and starts playing a part closer to the beginning so the first bits of video you saw were completely useless. Hard to understand, but....
So, Orange Kitty, does AMV'ing take hundreds of hours + trial and error? Or am I just using all the wrong equipment? I used DVDx.
o.O Haven't used DVDx, and from your experience I don't think I want to lol
I use Smartripper to rip, DVD2AVI to convert, and TMPEG to encode to mpeg. It usually takes only a couple hours tops. The encoding to mpeg takes the LONGEST
http://www.doom9.net has guides that will guide you through the process. Plus, when making an AMV, you don't have to rip the entire dvd (unless you want to), you just have to rip the scenes that you want. And you probably don't want to convert to mpeg for editing. You'll leave it as an uncompressed avi.
Personally, I usually capture my scenes through my DV 500 (
http://www.pinnaclesys.com ) capture card. I bought that for my pc before I got my mac. The process of getting the scenes onto my computer is faster capturing than the ripping process. Even though ripping a dvd will give you higher quality scenes, the slight generation loss in capturing doesn't matter to me.
Bottom line, Ripping can get very confusing but you can reach a higher quality end result (and it's cheaper than buying a capture card).
Capture cards let you rip anything analog (like from your vcr or s-video from your dvd player), it's quicker and depending on the card, will allow some Real Time effects
No, AMVing shouldn't take hundreds of hours. But when exporting the final product to a good file for web distribution, it can come down to trial and error.

In case anyone cares, I've made several AMV's, one of which is downloadable on thelastcookie.net/akane
However that's not the best one of the two. My best *completed* video would be my Kenshin AMV, putting footage from the kenshin movie to Sky Flashings by Earthsuit. It turned out quite nicely for my first completed project, and recieved the compliments of several professional AMVers with whom I brush shoulders. ^_^
I also have so many incompleted projects it's sickening. But one project I am (or was) doing that I think will fly is Water, which uses Saikano with some techno song I found on mp3.com a long time ago. It's really sweet except since it's a techno beat, synching is of the utmost importance... and must be accurate to the exact frame. And it needs to be resynched. I definitely have a good vision for this project though.
Thanks for listening.

It's because I've got no index page there. It's kind of sad, but I don't even keep a real website up there except for that one fan shrine at /akane/. I mostly use the host for storage purposes and to disseminate files to large groups of people easily. My hosting plan is actually about to expire and I don't think I'll be renewing it. I might renew the domain later and host the website on my own connection. But my cable company r teh nazi
so I don't know if that will work out.
