Avatar: Anime or Not?
PostPosted: Fri Jan 27, 2006 2:58 pm

Me and my friend got into a heated arguement in school today.
I said to my friend that Avatar was an American-Made show with Naruto influences.
He said that 20 year old kids on the Nickelodeon and IGN told him it was a full-fledged anime. He believed them.
Is it anime or fakime like IGPX?
If you believe its either, please post a link to back you up that tells it like it is. Please make sure this link is 100% rliable or he won`t believe me.

No, it's not anime. It's an american made show that is influenced by anime, like Teen Titans. It was produced in California and apparantly animated in South Korea if this
wikipedia article is correct.
And if wikipedia isn't reliable enough for you than
Animation Insider also says that it was produced in the U.S.
I don't have an opinion on the series as I haven't seen it, but it has been winning a bunch of awards and apparantly has actual martial-arts fight choreography, something rather rare in American animated programs.

Yes, it does. I put off everything to watch the entire 9 hour marathon. For a fakime kid's, it's pretty darn good.

"fakime". That's a new one on me. it must be a combination of the words "fake anime" or something similar to it.

I'm guessing shows like Dragon Booster are also 'fakime'? (what a strange word)

Yep. But
Dragon Booster 's style threw me off. I'm not that offended of this, but then, I'm not an elitist.

Sweet, I can finally put an end to this arguement.
Myoti, the One Piece dub owns Avatar IMO.
The Naruto influences are so obvious.

If the One Piece dub is better than Avatar, Avatar must SUCK.

Wasn't IGPX co-produced by Toonami and a Japanese company? If so wouldn't it be closer to real anime than avatar that was produced entirely in the States?

Seeing as how I'm a One Piece dub lover, you are incorrect.
Avatar is currently the best thing on TV. Period.

Fakime? That sounds rather elitist. If looking like anime gets a western production the label fake anime, let's go full circle and call anime "Disney Ripoff" (the anime style of Tezuka... who influenced Japanese anime heavily was inspired by Disney).
If American animators want to make a change so action and deeper stories takes precidence over animation, I say let them.

Although Avatar isn't authentic anime, I wouldn't discredit it as a great show. It has been greatly influenced by the japanese anime style, but I wouldn't call it an anime ripoff. Especially considering it is the best american show on any of the kids networks on tv (Nick, Disney, CN). Unlike most of the cartoons created nowadays, Avatar actually has a good plot, some interesting themes, and well developed charaters, the source of it's humor is not from underwear jokes, and the concept is fairly creative.

beau99: Now, if you said, you enjoyed Avatar, I would let it go but best thing on TV currently?! ).
I insist you go edit that post and say it was your opinion because that my friend, is a load of crap.
It`s not that top rated show. Period.
BTW, I like One Piece. The sub and manga are incredible. The dub is enjoyable but only okay. It used to me my favorite anime until I saw the real side of it.

Wow, let`s see you like crappy 4 kids dub and you like Avatar and your 19?!
That is pathetic, but hey, everyone has their own opinion.
Both of those shows are okay at best to me. The reason they are not phenomonal is because of their babiness.
Now, if you said, you enjoyed Avatar, I would let it go but best thing on TV currently?! You mus not like good anime or something because Full Metal Alchemist is IMO the best anime on channels 1-99 (All I have).

Gee, I thought the fact that I posted something under my name meant it was my opinion. I usually don't state other people's opinions in my posts. Oh well.

Tom, grow up and realize that people don't have to state it when they're giving their opinion. You're being horridly rude and that's a fact and not an opinion.

There is no need for you to apologize. It is Tom who should be apologizing to you. His conduct is reprehensible.

No he should apologize to me.
beau99 never said it was his opinion.
"Best show on TV. Period."
He`s stating it as fact. When he doesn`t mean opinion, I`m assumming he mean it has the highest rating.
I don`t think an apology is neccessary unless you give me a better reason.
EDIT: Actually GTF, I do aplogize. I was only thinking of one statement that I made, but I guess I bashed him because he liked it and he was 19.
Edited.

It goes without saying it's his opinion, virtually everything posted here is. And ratings have nothing to do with whether a show is even any good.

Seriously, if ratings dictated how good a show was, then Desperate Housewives is an awesome show.

good example:lol:
btw - if you want to get technical, it is never necessary in a written item to state that it is in the writer's opinion that .... it's just understood, especially if it's about a controversial subject in which the only right answer is one that correlates with your own opinion.
ex: just like in advertising - do they get on tv and say "in my opinion, this beer is the best around?" well, not that i've noticed, but i've certainly seen MANY advertixements that claim something is "undeniably the best" and they are merely stating an opinion.
all in all, I think everyone's getting a little bit snappy at each other over an animated tv show. Besides this thread was started to answer a question, not argue about who's anime/"fakime" is better than the others'.
that's my humble opinion in this matter, don't shoot me.

Okay, this is Tom Dincht under Monkey J. Luffy`s name.
I dislike the One Piece dub.
Monkey J. Luffy likes it but it`s under his username so therefore it must be his opinion.
BTW mods: i`m over his house, I didn`t hack into his username. He decided to let me make this post since I can`t log into his name.
Another, BTW, this debate is officially over unless you decide to PM Tom Dincht.
