So is this a reworking of a Macross title like before, or something Harmony Gold created itself?

It takes place after or during The New Generation.
It's a new story line.

I see ADV is finally releasing the Macross series as Macross, with the Japanese language tracks.

Hopefully they do better than that futility done by Animeigo...

The trailor looked good! I hated where NewGen ended and I'm hoping this wraps things up better. But it looks cool anyway

I think it is a pilot movie and if it sells are high they will start a series.
