Anime Trails

As someone who reentered the vast world of anime a little while ago it took some looking and talking to get an idea of where to start and what I might like. Even now, when I'm looking for something new, it can be tricky to find something I'd like. Especially when rentals can be few and far between, trailers are sparse and set are expensive to just buy.

It occurred to me then, that what might prove useful is a collection of Anime trails which can tie together various anime that would all appeal to the same audience. That is, just as Amazon offers - 'others who bought that also bought this', or 'you might also like', it might be nice to have some trails from those who know anime. The trick is finding the starting series which should anime which are typical entry points for people into anime, and then go from there. So then we might have - those who like Rurouni Kenshin might/should also like...

I suppose it could just be a simple table. Comparisons would have to be overall but I suppose there could be some based upon story, genre, or decency and overall 'feel'.

i go to http://www.animenfo.com and look at my favorite genres that are in the top 200. amazon is cool too, sometimes it hits you with lists at the side of the page, those are really cool too.

I'll check that out, but let's see if we can get something going here.

Those who like...would also like....

Rurouni Kenshin -

Last Exile -

Inuyasha -

Try to keep your selections as close as possible and the top few that come to mind.

This idea has merrit. Can you flesh it out a bit? I can think of a few ways to impliment it. I think it could really be useful. I'm guessing someone somewhere is doing it, but I don't see why we couldn't.

Okay, well, the simplesy way to look at this is to simply take some of the more well-known 'doorway' titles, those which stand the best chance of having been seen and liked by someone, and then from there suggest other titles which they are likely to enjoy. "If you liked Kenshin then you'll probably like..."

Where this might get really interesting though is if the trails were broken down into genres or types and do themed trails.

Something along the lines of - if you liked the historical aspects of Kenshin then you might also like.... or, if you liked the style of Samurai Champloo then check out...

People can then get hold of these handles and perhaps connect more with the trail provider relating to the specific aspects that grabbed them about a series. It can capture the nuances better than just a general review. The trick with reviews is to find a reviewer who thinks the way you do or likes the same things you like. Providing trails that run along these themes might be an easier way to make that recognition.

Or were you thinking something else?

edit: sorry mith >_> I totally misunderstood what Galant was saying

A lot of "shonen" which I have seen all seem to have the same sort of audience. A lot of my friend who love inuyasha recently god hooked onto Naruto, and it won't be long before they get hooked onto something new (Maybe... bleach? You could say im... attempting to convert them?)

When you look at things like Kenshin, Naruto, Bleach, Trigun, etc. They all have the basic flow of the story. Good guys, and bad guys, and random hilarious moments that we all enjoy.

MSP. This is considered SPAM. If you have something useful to say, please do it in a constructive mannor. The topic here is not "good anime" or whatever you're going on about.

Actually, this is kind of the problem, though. To make the trails reasonably coherent would require that the individual reviewers see the same kinds of facets in the component series as everyone else, and that's not going to really happen. We could use a ranking system to point out *commonly* viewed facets, however.

Yes, but the idea wasn't to have one single trail on any given genre but many.

I think it seems like Galant is saying that you could post show's that people who are fans of certian shows seem to like....For example.

If you like Cowbow Bebop try Trigun. I say that because many people who are fans of Bebop seem to like Trigun a lot.

It occurs to me that this wouldn't be that difficult to do automatedly. Essentially, you're asking a bunch of people what other anime they like, then building a list of the biggest links. You'd have to ask yes/no "did you also like this" for a LOT of anime, and use a large group of people, but it would work if you did.

Sounds good, almost like those 20 question websites where it will guess what you're thinking of in a certain category.

How does one set one up?
