One of the major reasons for the outrageous hair/eye colors in anime characters is for ease in telling them apart. Let's face it. If all five girls from Sailor Moon all had shoulder length black hair and dark eyes like regular Japanese people, would you be able to tell them apart? Probably not.

There's probably a few other reasons, but this is one of the big ones.

It may also have to do with certain steriotypes about blondes. I don't know if they're universal steriotypes, but if some of that "blonde bombshell" menality is universal, then it might be that many anime characters have blonde hair and blue eyes because there's a certain personality (And I'm not talking about being stupid) and build that people most commonly peg as blonde.

hmm I think it is cause many people have the view that blondes stand out more so they make the main char a blonde....

I can tell all the characters from Azumanga apart, and nobody is blonde.

Japanese people find blonde people pretty and attractive. Who wouldn't want to see pretty things? Even some Japanese fashions are based off the blonde beach girl.

Or even, the blonde + blue eyes people are lessening because their traits are recessive. Their growing scarcity makes them spayshul.

one of the main things about hair color is that it also represents personality type. green tends to apply to more spunky/mischievous/obnoxious people, blue is heroic/loyal, red is temperamental/fiery, gray mean they sorta "walk the fence" between good/evil, etc. do a google search for an academic article called "Cartoons From Another Planet". It's written by a Japanese woman, for a magazine I believe, that totally explains anime, it's origins, symbolism, history, uses, etc. It's rather lengthy (like 17 pages I think) but very in depth, and is actually a pretty good resource for to use with those that don't know what's up with anime; I used it with my parents (at least my dad), and he found it quite informative. The hair color thing, I believe, was one thing covered in there. Good stuff! :-)

So what did it mean in Silent Mobius after Katsumi was possessed and turned
temprorarily evil and her hair turned from Black to Red?

I wonder if fiery/tempermental applies only to red haired anime girls,Kenshin as
red hair and he's as calm and relaxed as they come when not fighting.

In Wolf's Rain, I recall none of the main characters having blonde hair and blue eyes, and I can say the same for Rurouni Kenshin and Inuyasha as well, but I see what you mean.

Blonde hair and blue eyes is considered an ideal. And since it doesn't occur naturally among Asians, giving a character those traits automatically makes them "unusual" and "distinctive." Same thing for red hair.

LOL!

Cher in Wolf's Rain had blonde hair and I beleive blue eyes, HoS.

Isn't long blonde hair supposed to be cool in Japan? If it is the "cool" thing then naturally it would be frequently depicted in media.

I think in Kenshin's case his having red hair was probably a way of indicating his
half-Dutch ancestry.
