I suggest Rurouni Kenshin. Very clean, a little blood, but nothing anyone shouldn't be able to handle. Since it was the anime that got me into anime, I highly suggest it! It's still my very favorite!! n.n

Cowboy Bebop is a classic, though it's got a lot of violence and some scantily clad ladies. >.>;
If you're looking for something to get into, I'd probably also reccomend Naruto and Shaman King. Longer series, and very addictive. XD;

Hey, RK got me into anime too ^^
If you're looking to getting into watching anime in subs, I would suggest looking into getting the Inuyasha dvds on netflix. I would also HIGHLY encourage you to stay away from the dub ^^ In my personal opinion they did horrible with it.
If you're just looking for something easier, you could watch FMA on CN. Unfortunately they're quite a ways in now and it wouldn't make any sense... so you could find that on dvd too. Its an AWESOME series.
If you like something more melacholy, I would suggest Gunslinger Girl. Its got its fair share of violence, but its very sad and deep. Since there's only 3 dvds (13 eps), if you end up buying them it costs less.
Last Exile is also good. There's tons of anime out there, so it really depends on what sort of things you like. Are you into fantasy, lots of romance, real life stuff, action in general? There's a anime in any genre, so there's a high chance we can find something you'd like.
Animenfo.com and anidb.net are both great resources for looking up anime btw. They have the plot synopsis and everything.
edit: I second Cowboy Bebop!! But not Naruto... personally I think that series just drags out too much and isn't anything compared to the manga.

Fruits Basket and Outlaw Star (in addition to Cowboy Bebop)

Just a note on Outlaw Star - you actually want to watch the cut version if you decide to pursue this series. There's a LOT of unnecessary nudity otherwise.

Monster.....

id say Naruto, Full metal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, or something

For the literary connoisseur, I'd recommend Gankutsuou, based on the one and only Count of Monte Cristo.
Cowboy Bebop is what got me into anime *shrugs* That, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
Trigun would be (slightly) lighter fare.
And of course, Giant Robo. For lots and lots of reasons.

my first anime was pokemon -.- but you don't have to watch that!
Sailor Moon, was what I watched next. A gundam series like Wing, or Seed, or 08th MS Team. Or a different one. I don't think I'd start with Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star, though. They are good though. Full Metal Alchemist is good, and maybe Inuyasha. sCRYed is pretty good. There's action in that but not too much. Its prettywell balanced between the talking, working through the plot, character development, and fighting scenes.
k, thats all.

One Piece!
I'm serious. But not the dub (for a billion different reasons). I showed it to my sis as her first anime, and she loved it (mostly for the way Luffy acts, which is also why I watch it
).

Yeah the only reason to watch the One Piece dub are the girls, especially Nami.
They're the only characters that have any decent voices to them in the dub.
As far as it goes can we ask what you like,i.e.Sci Fi/Fantasy/Horror,Msytery,
Western,etc.?
If you like for example Space Operas than I suggest:
*Geneshaft
*Gundam Seed
*Gundam Wing
*Crest/Banner of the Stars
*Cowboy Bebop
If you like fantasy then try:
*Inuyasha
*Escaflowne
For comedic Sci Fi try:
*Dual!Parallel Trouble Adventure

Last Exile is one of my conversion titles: a show I loan to other people with the hopes of converting them into anime freaks. So far it's worked with each person I've shown it to! Also, if you can handle rather hardcore violence, I would recommend the Samurai X OVAs Trust and Betrayal; in fact I would say you should see these before busting into Rurouni Kenshin due to the fact that they'll give you a greater appreciation for Kenshin the tv series. However, imo, wait a little while after seeing the OVAs before hitting the tv series; I watched the series the night after seeing the OVAs and hated it at first because the OVAs are definitely "darker", melancholic, or emtionally heavy than the series; thus when I heard Kenshin talking similar to a Dr. Seuss book in the series, I was like "oh my gosh! I can't believe they did this to him! This is crap!" So I turned it off, but checked out again a few weeks later after I'd given the OVAs a chance to settle, and then really enjoyed the series! Just my thoughts on the matter though. I also second Cowboy Bebop! Escaflowne is another excellent one for newbies in my opinion as well! And, for the more intellectual type, .hack SIGN :-)

You apparently haven't heard Robin yet, then. @___@

Like usual, I'm going to say Last Exile. It really depends what YOU like, though. I suggest Last Exile because it has action, it's not too wild, and has likeable characters. It's a good anime to start out with, IMO. And it's PRETTY!
Another would be Trigun. It's a more light-hearted action anime, and it's hilarious. Fruits Basket is, too! Maybe if you said what you were interested in, we could suggest some anime that are in that genre for ya. Yes-ah.

I suggest one of each of the major categories, and see what you like best. It's okay not to like all the genres, you know. ^^
Rurouni Kenshin, YuYu Hakusho or Naruto, Ghost in the Shell, Sailor Moon, FMA, Fruits Basket or Tenchi Muyo, You're Under Arrest, Pokemon (seriously, if you happen to like kiddy tournament things), Gankutsuou, Card Captor Sakura, Gundam Wing or SEED, Evangelion, Boys Be
Excepting hentai and shonen-ai, that should cover the major categories. ^^ If you're already 16, all of them should already be okay.

Start from the bottom and work your way up. Start with something like "Digimon" then work your way on up.

Or the original One Piece, like I said. It begins fairly simple and is easy to get into to.

How did you start your journey? Mine started with Pokemon, then moved to Digimon, then Monster Rancher...after a while I found Adult Swim and the rest is history!

Uhm, my actual first exposure to anime was with Superbook, a few years later I find out what anime is with Dragonball Z, Pokemon, and Digimon. Then I found REAL anime one night on Adult Swim (Cowboy Bebop). After exploring alot of action and mecha stuff, I decided to hunt down the classics from Akira to Wings of Honneamise (still working on that) and now I'm here.

I'd start off with Giant Robo, which is arguably the best anime ever made. Personally, I started off with whatever was on Saturday Animé on the sci-fi channel. I remember my first anime had a half naked woman and lots of mechs and tanks and people being ripped in half. I have no clue what it was called and I have never seen it since. Seeing as I was 8 at the time, I loved it and demanded more. I actually fell into the Pokémon and Sailor Moons AFTER I had watched stuff like Akira and Eva.

Meh, I started off with YuYu Hakusho. >=D Then Rurouni K to Gundam Wing, to -> Pokemon >__> Weird..
Pokemon should be a good start for ya.

I didn't start watching Pokemon until I really was into anime so I guess that makes me weird or something or at least different.

Nah, it doesn't. I like anime with good stories and characters, so the likes of Pokemon I watch only for laughs on a bad day. ^^V

Fruits Basket is a nice onw--not too intense.
or Gundam SEED.
Fullmetal Alchemist and Samuari Champloo may be a little too fast paced for newbie's...unless you're going in progressive order from easiest to more complex. In that case your list is right on the money!
