TCM To Show Miyazaki Classics

This came from the ICv2 News and Anime On DVD:

October 24, 2005
ICv2 has learned that in January 2006, Turner Classic Movies, a prominent cable and satellite network, will run nine animated features by the great Japanese anime director Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki's movies have received scant exposure on American TV so the showings on Turner Classic Movies should expose a wide audience to these masterworks.

A complete list of the films (and airdates) will be released next week, but ICv2 has learned that TCM will show such Miyazaki-directed classics as: Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, and Porco Rosso, as well as Whisper of the Heart, which was directed by Yoshifumi Kondou, though Miyazaki wrote the screenplay, drew the storyboards and produced the film.

Turner Classic Movies always broadcasts films in their original widescreen formats and typically airs subtitled versions of foreign films, though the linguistic format of the Miyazaki films is not known at this time.

Sounds good. I'm an Aussie but we are having something similar here on SBS. We has a Miyazaki Season. The ones shown were/are:

Porco Rosso (good), Laputa: Castle in the Sky (very good), Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind (excellent), Kiki's Delivery Service (very good), and Spirited Away (excellent).

They were my first exposure to his work (other than Spirited Away).
Enjoy them!

Okay, that's the most awesome thing I've heard in a long time. I now love TCM more than ever. Can't wait to see the air dates on these films.

We get TCM so it's good news for us.I would think they would air the sub version
since I remember some time ago one of the movie networks aired a Japanese
live action movie with subs.Although that is only a guess.

I can't wait for January to come! Miyazaki films on TV! I hope they don't start too early in January though. The only time I can watch cable is when I'm on campus at school and spring semester doesn't start until mid-January. I'll have to keep an eye on the TCM website.

Yeah, but alot of the those foreign films that they have shown, before didn't have a dub track at all from the start.

If TCM was smart, I would show, both the sub and dub format. Which makes me wondering if they will. TCM likes to make everyone happy when they show alot of the old flims. Alot of times, they will show a movie back to back, one in letterbox and the other in pan and scan.

I wonder if they just keep the flims in letterbox and show both of them in sub and dub format or the ones that do have a dub with it.

Hopefully if they do the dubs it will be the better ones.

I am really surprised that since Disney has the license to all these titles they are not showing them on their own cable channel. I noticed Kiki was not on the list and that is one they show on a regular basis. Totoro makes me wonder about the dub/sub aspect. They will either show the older dub of it (as I don't think Disney has finished theirs yet) or it will be subtitled.

I really hope it ends up being subtitles, I really cannot stand some of the older Miyazaki dubs.

The article answered my question. The English VAs are listed for all titles except Only Yesterday which lists the Japanese VAs.

The dubs wouldn't be so bad if they use professional voice actors instead of celebs.

I'm with you mitsuki, but I'm willing to give the celebs a chance. If they really do horribly I can rest in the fact that sooner or later the movies will be on DVD and I can watch them subtitled.

Personally, I like most celebritities better than I like VAs. It seems [a majority of] professional voice actors/actresses buy into the "Bigger is better" idea when playing a character. They make their voices as overtly energetic and melodramatic as is humanly possible. There are, obviously, may exceptions such as Monica Rial, Vic Mignogna, Shelley Calene-Black, and Laura Bailey. Actors and actresses, good ones atleast, have been trained in the art of subtlety, and they usually do a good job of not over playing characters. I truly appreciate that.

Yes, give me actors anyday!

FINALLY, I get to see Nausicaa and Castle of Cagliostro! WOOOHOOO!

It begins on Jan.5 according to what ANN had on their site.

One of the reasons why I think professional VAs should be used instead of
celebs is the simple reason that is what they do for a living.Let's be realistic
celebs don't need the money but professional VAs do.So when you have a celeb
take the place of a VA in a dub what you are doing is taking away the money that
the VA would normally have earned.

Whoever does it best should get the job, IMHO. I haven't really heard a lot about VAs not having enough work. I'm sure it does happen, but I don't really think that a company should be obligated to hire a certain VA just to make sure they have food on the table. . .

I don't have a problem celebs doing voice work for anime, but there is one thing that you have to think about.

A Celeb is not going be payed cheap to do any work. I know that VA don't do their work for nothing, but you know that celeb will ask for more to do any work or voice work.

Disney is the only one that can really pay that much to get Celeb to do the voice.

If ADV, Viz or Bandai tried that, they wouldn't make much money off the sales of DVD's and that would drive the cost up for having the flim put on DVD.

I think you find this argument of celebs over anime VAs applies mostly to the case of Disney releases. Naturally, whenever they have put out their own works they have used celebs who had name recognition at the time of release (of course the same can be said for productions like Shrek). It's pretty much a given that they are going to seek to do the same with Miyazaki's works because they have this pool and name recognition to pull from. Most other works from ADV, Viz, Bandai, etc. will always continue to use companies that have specialized in anime releases.

If they use the dub of Totoro (and it is indeed the older dub), this is interesting to me. Fox owns that dub, doesn't it? I'm no expert on copyright laws, but it seems odd to me that a Fox dub could be aired for a movie that Disney owns the distribution rights to.

Update on Miyazaki Movies that will be played on TMC.

This was posted at ANN.

Of particular note, the press release announces that each movie will be presented in English first, with an encore presentation in the original Japanese. The only exception will be Only Yesterday, which will be presented twice in Japanese

The times for these movies are sure... late though :/ Gotta remember to set my alarm early to tape then! . Well, maybe it WAS a good thing that I JUST got Turner in my cable since the channels decided to get switched around :/ I've been wanting to see Whisper of the Heart and several others... Half of them I own, so I can check out others I haven't bought yet^^

I wonder why My Neighbours the Yamadas and The Cat Returns didn't make the list?

Oh if anyone was wondering, Nausicaa.net said they ARE going to be subs^^ Joy! I'm soooo glad we got that channel when we did!
