For the longest time my favorite anime has been trigun ... ever since it was on tape in english! first volume mezmerized me and the rest is history! But finally earlier this year an anime rose up to challenge Trigun's supremacy in the realm of Yama's anime collection!!!
This anime is a mixture of hip-hop culture and ancient Japan (hence my terrible DJ onimonipeas in the topic title!!!)
Samurai Champloo is an excellent anime (has some violence though lol) and I am completely transfixed by it!!! The opening battlecry has some sick lyrics (in a good way) and its beat is psycho (also positive xp)
So I suggest you see it as soon as possible if it seems like your cup o tea. And if not, give it a chance anyway!
And don't worry Trigun lovers ... it hasn't completely won yet!!!

I thought Samurai Champloo was a pretty decent anime, but I can't say I became terribly enamored with it. When there were episodes with fighting they were generally pretty good (it's nice to see something with a decent budget), but most of the episodes intended to be lighthearted fell flat, in my opinion. It definitely has style though, with the exception of some of the last episodes where it seems to me that the writers were running out of ideas.

It was Psycho Ann that pointed out to me a very interesting truth: if you watch the first episode, then skip to the last three, you get a coherent story without really missing anything except some character development. If the entire series was more like these episodes I'd probably like it better.

I like it alot. Despite the fact I dislike rap/hip-hop, I like this style of it. I especially like the ending theme song (the name forgets me). I was actually just listening to it in my car.

Samurai Champloo has sexual inuindos in it, and homosexuals. That's why I don't like it. I started to watch it, but the above mentioned things I couldn't stand, so I stopped. It bothered me, and though there were some episodes where none of that was present and the fighting totally rocked, it would just pop up every once and a while and ruin it. And some perverted guy was always trying to rape Fuu or lure her into his (pardon my bluntness) bedroom.

The fighting was pretty cool though, however, I wouldn't recomend this anime. But, that's your choice.

I just don't like it because, frankly, I think it sucks.

Kari Wahlgren is one of my favorite female VAs in the dubs.

Actually, I thought the dub was done pretty well. Nice effect using the DJ-scratching to remove the swearing.

How great is that! Love it. I wish they could have done scratching over the SUBS! I would have enjoyed it more! :)

At times those elements are rather creepy, yes. Due to the ridiculous amount of sexuality (not that there isn't worse, just that it felt out of place) I definitely have no intention of watching Samurai Champloo again. However, for the first time through, I was able to ignore such things.

Some of that swearing was actually added, then scratched out. For example, in the first episode:
Jin (Japanese): Even if that master is trash?
Jin (English): Even if that master is a piece of (wikka wikka).
But actually, I don't mind it, really. The dialogue in the English version is generally much better than the literal translation from Japanese.

I've seen two episodes of it, and I have to say that I like it so far. Pretty humorous in places, and it seems obvious from the get go that they had a budget. That always tends to help things. I usually go for the sappy stuff that isn't as violent, but this isn't bad. So far.

Actually I do like Jin better than Mugen.I think Mugen's just a lazy slacker
who lets Jin and Fuu do all the work.I hope Jin let's him have it. :cool:

Ah, so I take it you haven't seen the entire show?

Jin was the closest any character came to being my favorite, though the more his personality was explored the less I cared. Overall, I would say that characterization is one of the show's weakest aspects. Most characters appear for only a few episodes, and generally such characters are unique or colorful, but this was generally not the case. The only one I really liked was the samurai in the last three episodes.

AS has been rerunning the early eps.They did the one with the hip hop samurai who was searching for Jin yesterday.

That is one of the better ones, in my mind. It has the unusual style, some random humor (the hip-hop guy), some character development, and what is actually a real plot (which I have no intention of spoiling).

i love that episode ... the guy beat-boxing on a sword hilt was hilarious
as for the innuendo ... i must admit im a sucker for a good sex joke and the episode where mugen was beating the crap out of a group of guys while yelling "I want my nookie!!!" had me rolling on the floor literally
Mugen is definetly my favorite character (I got him on a personality test)
I have seen the first 20 english episodes and none of the japanese ones (although i only need press the 'audio' button on my remote to watch them -_-')
I also loved the graffiti competition episode ... any time they bring the hip/hop culture aspect in is usually my favorite.

While I don't expect to get this person on a personality test, my favrotie would be Fuu-chan.

I've seen about half of the series on DVD so far. I find it interesting so far. And I agree with Yamato, I love when they bring the hip-hop aspect into it. I wouldn't buy the series but I did get the soundtrack.

I liked this show a little bit. The sexual stuff gets on my nerves though. The fighting is cool and the hip-hop aspect of it gives it a type of humour you don't find very often, but the story seems to wander off somewhere and gets lost for awhile. I kind of lost enterest after a few episodes where they just ran around.

I found a site where they had characters listed according to the Meyer Briggs
Temperment theory.
Interesting both Jin and Ryuho were listed as INTJs along with Sango.
I=Introverted
N=iNtuitive
T=Thinking
J=Judging/Justice
I seem to be a mix of INTJ/INTP and a bit ISTJ.
So I am a bit like Jin and Ryuho in that part(and Sango as well).

Would you care to link to these sites? It is fine for you to state such things, as they relate to the show, but members seem to enjoy taking quizes or comparing any number of things.

It wasn't a quiz as such it was a list of anime characters sorted according to the
Myer Briggs Personality typing.And if I can find it again yes I will.

ok this is what I was talking about:

Please keep in mind though that this is one of those dating services like
Okcupid and if you do take the test on their site at the end they ask you to
give them some personal information.

Hm, thats a .php link, so it probably won't function when isolated (it doesn't on my computer, anyway). Thanks for linking it, but I think a link a few steps back would probably be necessary for proper results.

Meyer-Briggs results for anime characters... I wonder if they tried to fit characters to one of the types, or if they took the test as they thought the characters would?

I'm trying to understand how you would give any fictional character,let alone an
anime one the Myer Briggs test as well.
In any case Saturday was one of my favorite eps thus far,the one with the field of
pot that makes everyone except Jin and Fuu high because they're being hung on
crosses to punish them and thus above the fumes.Unfortunately I zonked out before the end and woke up in time for s-CRY-ed.

Oh yeah. I've seen that episode. It just goes to show that you shouldn't do drugs kids.

That is a really trippy episode. The only part of it I really liked was Fuu's questions followed by Jin's "Hm." This was the only episode of any anime that an older friend of mine saw, and I'm sure his opinion about the entire medium is now terribly twisted.

:lol:
I wish I hadn't zonked out though as I think that was one of the funnier
endings so far.And yeah,I do have a somewhat warped sense of humor.
But think of the entire irony of it,Fuu and Jin are hanging from crosses so that they're above the smell of the pot burning,as a consequence when
they're finally brought down they're the only ones(including Mugen)who
aren't high!
btw:So far my other favorite ep. is the one with the gay Dutchman in it,mainly for the food eating contest at the beginning when Fuu looses
for swiping at a fly and the judge thinks she was signaling that she quit!
