Fooly Cooly, I think. What does Fooly Cooly mean? That is the question.

Nothing really ever gets explained. Just accept it for the wierdness that it is. I think the closest you could come to assigning a meaning to anything is a coming of age story.

Yeah. That show is just surreal. I tried to sit down and understadn the story, then I realized that it wasn't worth the trauma to the logic center of my brain.

"Fooly Cooly was just the moronic way the American distributor transliterated "Furi Kuri" or フ] in Japanese. In Japan it is FLCL.

And I think it will go on Gainax' "Bad Idea" list

and I believe furi kuri is an onotopeia (sp?)

thats not true if your into a crazy world where alian girls go around hitting boys on the head with a guitar and a robot comes out and eats the boy. Over all it is pointless but its funny.

I'd have to agree with Mythmaster on this one...It's an interesting work...And it has good animation. I can't really justify it though because it has to much inopriate junk in it.

Here's a question for those of you who have seen the dubbed version of FLCL: what went on during the section of the first episode where the animation consisted of slightly altered versions of the manga panels? In Japanese, at least, it seemed to be some sort of lengthy, complicated word play, so I was wondering how this section of the episode would be translated for the dub.

It's still mostly word play, though most of that scene goes by so fast that it's hard to catch anything.

The reason FLCL makes so little sence is that Gainax just did it to blow off steam (and probobly to try and kill lingering post-Eva expectations)

Ok...::cracks knuckles:: (Note: the spoiler does have a sexual tone...though said in a professional manner, I do use a sexual term.)

Fooly Cooly, in eccescence (sp?) means kneading bread in a twsting type fashion. This is however taken out of context to in conjuction with the series main theme: Naota-kun sexual desires (or furstrations) as a kid his age. So when you take it in this context (and Fooly Cool is English's best translation to this) the Japanese word Furi Kuri would translate into
tweaking of the breasts
.

The mostly sexual themes are mostly subliminal and hardly comes across off in the Dubbed. Even the scenes that may appear sexual (Episode Brittle Bullet comes to mind) are not even sexual in itself in that sort of way in watching in it's orginal context. But the word play used is highly suggestive of the sexual themes when you look into the series itself.

This anime I would not suggest to someone who is highly sensitive to sexual themes however I enjoy it as a intresting pieice of work of good sub/dub, animation, music, and randomness.

It's a very wierd show, but it is very deep. It all starts to make sense after a while. The character development is awesome, and of course the insanity of it all is appealing too.

Personally...I'd rather hit one against my head just to see if a robot with a television screen as an head would come out...oh what a joy what would be. Then I could put a apron on it.

I am so glad I decided to purchase the DVD's. They have a nice booklet that explains alot about the series.
