Escaflowne (the movie)

Okay, so I saw Escaflowne, the movie. Personally, I don't get it.
I hear there's a series, but I've never really read or seen anything about it. Every so often I'll see the name Escaflowne mentioned somewhere on one of the anime sites I serf from time to time, but other than that, I know nothing of it. Accept, now, I've seen the movie.
Well, it started out kind of weird, I thought, and a little confusing. Then, it got weirder and even more confusing. At one point I thought it was going to smooth out and be normal like all the other anime's I'm used to, but then it got weird and confusing again. And the ending was like 'huh?', so I was even more confused by the time the credits rolled past my tv screen.
Can someone explain it to me? Maybe, tell me if the series is different from the movie or not, because I was thinking about giving the series a try sometime, but I don't know having seen the movie.
Oh, and I thought the plot, character development, and overall storyline was rushed. I mean, I know that they only had two hours to cram the whole thing into, but it could have flowed smoother, maybe. I don't know.
Help! Explain to this confused, anime fan! She's about to have a fit over Escaflowne the movie!

The series came frist. The movie is a retelling of the story, but they had to cut alot out and they change alot of things around.
I'm a big fan of series and I thought the movie is okay, but it's not as good as the series.
I pm you and tell you more about the series. I don't want to give away too much to the others that haven't seen it and don't want to know a whole alot about it.
Edit: I should have said that the moive is a retelling of the story and not retelling of the series. Sorry about that!

I've seen the series, and I saw the movie too, and personally I liked the movie better. It had a better ending, comparitivly. I thought it was drawn better as well.

Hm? I watched the Movie LONG before the TV series and wasn't bothered by confusion :/ Looking back, I guess there were werid parts in it like the psychic powers shown or whatever it was havign them go all Dragonball Zish!
I REALLY liked the movie and don't see why alot of reviews downsize it. Saw the TV series after and thought that they were both really good in their own ways.
Haven't seen the mvoie in a bit, but... if you wanna ask (WITH spoiler tags if needed) on certain parts I can try to help... or you can PM me.

Think of it like those Tenchi Muyo movies. They weren't connected to the OVAs or TV series either.

Tenchi movies 1 and 3 actully are connected to the Tenchi Universe storyline.

I have Tenchi Forever but haven't watched it yet.
As far as Escaflowne the movie,I kept listening to Hitomi's voice and I knew the
voice actress was familiar but I couldn't quite nail her so I had to go to the
Anime News Network afterwards and look up the movie.Turns out it had been
Kelly Sheridan.I knew there was a reason I loved Hitomi.

Oy! The movie is horrible! I absolutely adored the series, and knew the movie was a retelling, but it was just atrocious. They basically used the same names for completely different characters and a totally weird, abstract storyline. I was appalled. The manga isn't very good either, but the series is fantastic.

I like the series and I want to see the movie. Was gonna watch it on CN but somebody else got the remote, and, seeing how I'm the only one in my family who doesn't hate anime, I was outta luck.

...Shoot, I was looking forward to just buying the movie and not having to drop 100+ bucks on the series.

Lol that's what I do with most of my anime. I buy the movies 'cause I can't afford to blow a couple hundred bucks on dvd's. Although the Initial D box set is quite tempting.

Perhaps you can befriend someone who will let you borrow it? That's how I see 90% of my anime. ^^;;

The thing that I didn't like about the movie was.
They made Hitomi into a sad, suicidal girl that is not happy with anything. Where in the series of Escaflowne. She enjoys athletics and is very couragous, willing to sacrifice herself for others. However, many times she does what's best for her, in which she learns that she needs to change.
Van, I can't really stand Van in the movie at all. In the series Van is a bit shy, quite stubborn at times and doesn't always think things out, but he cares about the people of his country and his friends and will do almost anything for them. Van was never bloodthirsty and that violent in the series, but he was in the movie.

I saw the second half of the movie and I was a bit confused. Does anyone know who that
Singing woman was? She looked like an elf or something... Anyway, I assumed that she had something to do with Hitomi longing to go back to the Earth or something. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks
I'm thinking...
Sora was controlled under Folken to firstly bring Hitomi to Gaea for him. But... it hitned that she died with Folken because she wanted to stay by his side... But the singing started at the ending once again with her already dead, so maybe she was doing it "spiritually" or SOMETHING!
I dunno, I didn't pay attention to much on it cause I just liked the pretty song^^

Does it matter if you see the movie before the series? Will it leave alot unexplained?

Nope, not at all. Since the movie is retelling of the story and has no tie in with the TV series.

I got confused though. Maybe its just because I watched it late at night and had the sound down so I wouldn't disturb my parents who were in bed already, but nonetheless.
I would like to see the series, its just finding a way to see it thats the catch. I'll probably have to wait until cn shows it or something, or until I can buy it on dvd (which will be never). But the movie was interesting, despite the fact that I was confused and found it weird. The series sounds better than the movie from what you all have said.

I had checked the movie out for the library the first time I saw it, and it left me scratching my head (OR that could have been because I just had gotten my hair cut and it always itches after it's cut short) It's a great anime, and the animation is nice, the characters are cool, but I don't understand it at all. So if you would mind WingZero, could you send me a PM as well explaining this to one very confused anime guy?

Just to make sure, you are asking about info on Escaflowne the movie right and not Escaflowne the series, right? I just want to check first, before I seen any info on it. But the movie is not my strong point really as I love the series more.

I want AS to show the series now that we've seen the movie.I think if...HORRORS...
they ever cancel Inuyasha that Escaflowne would be the best series to replace it
with.

*GASPS* DON'T SAY THAT!!!!!!!! O_O
Mentioning 'cancel' and 'Inuyasha' shouldn't be in the same sentence. It should be a crime.
But, yes, I would like them to show the series. I wonder if they are. I saw a comercial or something somehwere one day that said Escaflowne was coming to Adult Swim. I wonder if they meant the movie or the series, or both. I dunno.

I have this feeling that maybe Escaflowne will be coming to CN and here is why. I thought about this after I saw the ad for Escaflowne the movie.
I said this a few weeks ago on my LJ.
The ad has clips of the movie and plays a piece of music as the ad keeps going. I started to feel that the music was out of place for this ad.
Then it hit me, the music that they are using for the ad is not even music from Escaflowne the movie, but from the Escaflowne TV.
The song that they are using is Shadow Of Doubt from Escaflowne TV OST 2 CD
Now, why are they using a piece of music that is not played in the movie?
hmmm!

I have a hard time beliving Esca is coming to CN, simply because they expressed interest in it years ago, and Fox snatched it up to spite them. I doubt their bitter rival would so easily give up their one selling point.

Sooner or later Fox's rights will expire.

HAH! Yessssss....
The movie was a decent B movie. I was kinda dissapointed, but at least the opening was cool.

Kelly Sheridan is one of my favorite female voice actors in the dubs.
Hitomi is some ways similiar to Kagome, which is why I think Escaflowne would make a good replacement if ever Inuyasha ends it's run on CN.
