What draws you into anime?

What i ask from an anime series is a good story with likeable characters some decent action and/or comedy and possibly some philosophical ponderings. Good artwork and music certainly doesn't hurt.

Good action, good humour, amazing settings and visuals help.
What I like is when characters have strong bonds of friendship that is more than just a buddy-buddy pairing by the author but a reasonable, plausible friendship. But that counts for not only anime but most fiction as well for me.

Atmosphere, character depth, good (and unique) animation, directing skills, unique art, and if there are action scenes, I prefer them to be pretty kinetic.

I like anime that has good artwork, deep and complex characters, deep and complex relationships, good and unique plot that makes sense in some way, has to have comedy in it somewhere and lotsa action never hurts

It doesn't have to be deep. Good characters and a fun concept is what draws me to certain anime.

Characters I can relate to... Oh and pretty artwork.
Kura, I've got to admit that your last paragraph made me a little nervous.

Good animation and good, continuos stories are what drew me in the beginning. I watch mostly comedies now with a healthy dose of good drama.
What will really draw me into an anime is the characters, though. If the characters are interesting and fun to be around, then I will be drawn in regardless of what type or genre it is.

Anime has tons of good artwork and insights into the Japanese Culture, including their myths and legends.

I agree with Mave...that last bit didn't have to be mentioned.
As for me, great animation and story. Fantasy especially, because there aren't enough fantasy comics, movies or shows nowadays. At least the kind I like. Also drama, because for me at least it proves that animation can be serious stuff and not kiddie stuff.

Maybe I should edit it out then?

I guess if it's clean and interesting, not too much of a "down" show, and something I can sorta get into. I.e. some characters I can like or identify with.
Basically: characters. Characters make the story IMO.

Usually the art style and animation is what draws me first (typically if it's more unique or if it has a sort of "cute" form to it, though not overly so).
Also, it needs to be fun and a good story is nice as well (though this tends to come along with by the time I find that I like it).

Yeah, 2 things: Pretty artwork (weastern stuff stinks to me), and characters I can relate with..dont have to have good realationships.
For example, I can really relate to Mamimi from FLCL...dont agree with most stuff in the show..but i can definitly relate with her..
