I'm in the mood for a good sci-fi anime.
Can anyone suggest to me a Sci-Fi anime that doesn't center around Mech battles and has a good, deep plot?

Robotech is a good one if you like oldies. Iria is also very good ... then there's Martian Successor Nadesico (it has *some* mechs in it), The Irresponsible Captain Tylor ... Nadia is also sort of sci-fi.

I believe he wanted non-mecha, Gypsy, which Robotech has in spades.

I would second Gypsy's suggestion for Iria.

Cowboy Bebop (series and movie)
Ghost in the Shell (movie and Stand Alone Complex)
Crest/Banner of the Stars
Nadesco (a comedy but still pretty good, ditto for Captain Tylor)
Akira
Patlabor I and II (they have mech, but they're more like SF mysteries that happen to have mech in them). Skip WXII. I haven't seen the series.
Infinite Ryvius.
Metropolis.
Voices of a Distant Star.

I'd recomend Serial Experiments Lain. Its somewhat esotetic though but its very intresting. I also thought Crest of the Stars and banner of the stars was good.

If you don't mind the equivalent of R rated content, Green Legend Ran was very good
Oh, and I forgot: Wings of Honneamise was also very good.

The Eva Monkey wrote:Aim for the Top 2: Diebuster, aka Gunbuster 2, which is like FLCL but with mechs. Very promising, available on fansub. Not really traditional Mecha, more comedy action.
Just a side note, if Gunbuster 2 is anything like the first one, there's quite a bit of nudity in it, so you might want to be aware of that.

I've been hearing good things about Planetes, though I haven't actually seen it yet, so I wouldn't know for sure.
Memories is pretty darn good too. Three short films for the price of one

I'd go for Nadesico, there is some mecha, but not a ton.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention a series, huh? Irresponsible Captain Tylor has almost no mecha at all...and it's a great series. I highly recommend it.

My recommendations:
1.Silent Mobius
2.Crest/Banner of the Stars
3.Geneshaft
4.Cowboy Bebop
5.Last Exile
6.Serial Experiments Lain
7.Ghost In The Shell:Stand Alone Complex
8.R.O.D.The Tv/Read Or Die
9.Gundam Seed(I know it does have mech, but also has a great storyline and
terrific characters...*cough*FLAY*cough*)
10. .hack//sign and .hack//legend
Besides Gundam Seed for mech(if you ever changer your mind on the
subject):
1.Dual!Parallel Trouble Adventure
2.Betterman
3.Zoids:Fuzors

Planetes seems like a good anime.
Trigun is really good.
Gundam 0080, but it has mechs...
