I was surfing animemusicvideos.com when I came across one on Last Exile. The animation looked really good, as did the review, so I watched the first dvd, which, consequently, was also pretty good.
What Im trying to ask is: Is the series good the whole way through?
I don't want to spend alot of money on something and then find out I don't like the ending (which has happened previously; :bang: )

Well, what other title(s) have you been dissapointed in the ending?

Last Exile is a spectacular show! I own the entire series, and it's definitely high quality, both in its art and it story! The content is great in that there's no sexual content (not even fanservice type stuff!- save for a couple dresses that show cleavage, but nonsexually), the violence is mainly between the airships and vanships, and the language is also at a minimal. "Epic" is one word that describes Exile. The characters are well developed, displaying emotion convincingly and making you care about them. The story is grand, twisty, and emotional. I highly recommend it! In fact, should the person have the time, it's also a great "conversion" title; in other words it's a good series to show someone that you'd like to try and get interested in anime! Best of luck to you! Get the series!

Last Exile is an awesome series! I got the box set on Christmas and my cousin and I loved it! The animation is excellent, the storyline is really good, the characters are awesome and if you are a military buff (like myself) who's fascinated by large ships and epic battles with cannons going off this anime is for you!

I just finished the series a little while ago. Let's see... epic, beautiful, emotional... I can't really think of anything to say that hasn't been said already. At seven volumes it's not too long either, unlike Rurouni Kenshin or Inuyasha which seem to go on forever - and before the Kenshin fangirls/Kagome fanboys beat me down, let me just say that they are good series, they're just long .

My favourite anime series, although I haven't seen many at all. The animation is great, the characters are life-like and the setting is full of steampunk goodness. There is some violence (vol. 6 has the most), very little language, one or two clevage shots. Overall, its a pretty clean anime and very good to boot!

I'm with all the others but I do warn you that the ending can be a bit confusing...I've seen the series through twice and I don't really get it.

I just finished it (hee hee thanks Zipo!) and I abosutely was blown away by it. 5 stars out of 5 is not enough to justify how great the series is.

everyone's writing such well thought out comments, so i'm just going to say something fan-girlish. *grin*

I LOVE Last Exile. This the one series my bro and I are both chipping in to buy(btw...certain dvd's you can get at Best Buy for $14.99...pretty decent price.)

The music is good, the art is beautiful, the characters are endearing(but PLEASE watch it in Japanese! LOL. I dont consider myself a sub vs dub 'snob' but the English version annoyed me. so yeah), and the plot is intriguing. solid stuff.

Now I can't make any promises about the ending b/c in truth i've only seen about 16 episodes so far, but I imagine it will be good. ^_^

Oh contrare adoptive mommy.

I loved the voice acting. They had almost all my favorite VA besides Wendee Lee, Robert Wicks, Emily Brown, Steve Cannon, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Dorothy Melendrez.

Not only is Johnny Young Bosche (Vash - Trigun) as Klaus and Kari Wahlgreen (Robin from Witch Hunter Robin and Haru Haruko from FLCL) as Lavie voice but it also has Crispin Freemen (Hellsing, Ghost in the Shell, Witch Hunter Robin). Kari and Crispin have done alot of voice working anime and game titles. It also stars Michelle Ruff (Chobits, Rurouni Kenshin, Witch Hunter Robin), David Lelyveld (Ghost in the Shell, Witch Hunter Robin, .hack//SIGN), John Daniels (Cowboy Bebop, Gungrave), and quite the surprise...Joshua Seth who plays Dio in LE who also voiced worked with Johnny Young Bosche aka Vash voiced Knives in Trigun. So it was a Trigun reunion for the two characters that in a way reminded me of Vash and Knives - Klaus and Dio.

::head 'splodes from so many awesome VA's::

^ LoL. nooo...now you've made me feel terrible.

I dont know why Lavie's voice bothered me so much, but then again I only watched part of an episode in English. I find that if I start a series in Japanese though(and I did w/ this) I can't watch it in English w/o being somewhat annoyed, and vice versa. lol. oddness.

but yes...*apologizes to all the well-praises VA's and backs away from thread*

I only watch about 45 seconds of the English dub, so I'm not terribly qualified to comment on it (though Lavie's voice irritated me too). But I would really plug watching it in sub, if for no other reason than that the original titles of the episodes are in English, so when you watch it in sub, you get to hear a Japanese woman saying the English titles, and her accent is the *cutest* thing ever (not to mention rather interesting, since every once in a while she'll say a vowel that sounds completely American. Very odd).

And yeah, Last Exile is awesome. I think there's one flaw in the worldbuilding (the whole water thing doesn't make sense, IMHO), and one annoyingly pointless character death (the one who falls from the ship--those of you who've seen it know whom I'm talking about). So go watch it! Now!

I enjoyed the series a lot. I'm not sure it deserved the RAVE reviews some people were giving it, but it's definitely worth the time to watch it. The story's pretty good, and the animation is flawless. If that's enough to interest you, watch it.

The only obviously problem with the show was that
ALEX DIESS!! WHY!? WHYYYYY!!?? *sobs. repeatedly.*
Am I the only one wondering if the guy in the white catsuit, Lord Deo, was gay? I thought he was.

I don't think he was "gay". It was just how he was as a person. His personality was a bit flamboyant. I think they were trying to touch his innocent and niave side because he didn't want to grow up.

I found Lavie's voice irritating at times but I still love Kari.

Michelle Ruff also did (points to avatar)Mitsuki Sanada on Dual!(using her mother's name Georgette Rose)and Elie on Ravemaster and you can hear her on Gungrave
as Maria Asagi.
Joshua Seth is probably most familiar for the voice of Tai on Digimon.
I always thought the race through the caves was better than a certain pod race on a certain prequel to a certain movie series with the initials SW.
I also love the way that Lavie and Claus interact like brother and sister from the
very first.

This was the series that brought me into the world of anime in the first place. I highly recomend it.

As for Dio, we had a discussion about him in the review thread, and I think that the general consencious was that he was just emotionally disturbed and hadnt been taught to behave normally.

About that spoiler:
Honestly, while I didn't *want* Alex to die, I think it did make sense. Have you ever come across characters that just seemed "doom-ridden"? Alex struck me as being like that. He was obsessed with his past, with revenge and guilt, to the point that he was willing to kill Sophia to get at Delphine. So while it was really sad, it made dramatic sense to me that he would accomplish his mission but, in doing so, self-destruct. It would have been great if he had lived, and if Sophia had been able to make him happy...but I don't know if it could have happened.

Now, if you want to talk about problem--I think problematic death was Dio's. There was this huge, dramatic build-up about Oh no, Dio is kidnapped, Oh no, Dio is brainwashed, Oh no, we must save Dio, Oh no, Luciola died so Dio could be free--and then he randomly goes insane and falls out of his airship. HUH??!! was my second reaction. (My first reaction being, "Nooo!!! DIO!!!!!)
About Dio being gay...I second the comment of whoever said something about him being "innocent." Dio seems in some ways really childish, and honestly the thought of him romantically involved with ANYONE just seems so wrong. It's true that he's obsessed with Claus, but I think that's just because he's a freak who's obsessed with Claus and loves to drive him nuts. ;)

Dio had this mad fascination with Klaus' skills as a vanship pilot and also how he handled situations. Concerning piloting skills, Klaus was the first as far as Dio was concerned that was anywhere near his match. As the show much later insinuates, Dio is in fact very childish in nature due to the relationship he has with Delphine

How do you create a click n drag spoiler box to type in? Haven't done it before, and I have something else to say 'bout Dio and one of the previously mentioned spoilers (I own the whole series)

I get vertigo everytime they show the scene where Lavie and Claus land
on the ship and Lavia chases the toy goat down before it falls off.
Personally Sophie was my favorite of the characters, even though she
was a Princess she didn't act any different from anyone else or expected to be treated anything else than like the officer she was. :jump:

Wow I never expected so many answers! I think I will be getting the series (although I had partly already planned to before now  ) About the whole dub vs. sub thing, I'll probably end up watching them both. I've noticed that the slight difference in dialogues can sometimes make a difference in the storyline.

(also, question like eva-boy: how do you create an "originally posted" box? Never did it before...)

ermm..well someone can correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe by 'originally posted' you're speaking of quoting? You can either choose 'REPLY' on that entry or type <quote> writing here </quote> (except replace the <> with brackets [] )

lol, however that's probably a lousy explanation.

also...spoilers are
tags if i'm not mistaken. the same as quote.

I'm rewatching it again and I'm starting to realize how good the music really is (loves celtic music).

"Over the sky" by Hitomi (ending theme song)

That's the ending theme song.
