The cel-shaded future of anime....

Hey everyone. Just bought the special edition 2 disc set of Appleseed; I'd already seen it via bootleg ( a buddy bought it for me not knowing it wasn't legit). Anyways, just thought I'd let you guys know that this is a very impressive movie! The visuals are just........ gorgeous, and even that word doesn't do it justice. Just thought I'd put up this thread to get anyone's comments/opinions on Appleseed or the future of anime for that matter, as cell-shaded stuff is starting to take off quite a bit. There's another movie that came out recently that was cell-shaded I believe that had the word "blue" in the title I think, but can't quite remember what it was called. Anways, Appleseed is a great film, and it has a rather profound message to it as well (at least I thought so). Let me know your thoughts on this topic guys!

"and even that word doesn't do it justice"
no TV can do this movie justice either, so unfortunate that no digital prints made it to the >50 US theaters that showed the movie.

I'm not trying to be obnoxious...but isn't most anime already cell shaded?

Cell shading = the style of shading used on animation cells (ie no soft blending like in other forms of coloring/CGing). Or at least that's what I thought it was.

They mean that its CG graphics that uses cell shading to achive an anime look.

And yes this movie is absolutly awsome. Specially on a 17" high res LCD. Oh yea. Briarius just rocks. I loved it.

Yeah cell shading is basically CG animation with "lines" drawn over top of it to give it a 3D CG feel with a semi-2D cartoon look; video game examples, though not the prettiest, would be Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Wild Arms 3, and XIII. Btw, when I said the "cell-shaded future of anime" I wasn't implying that all anime will eventually be cell-shaded and drawing will be ditched, just to give some clarity to my thoughts.

I have to admit, I'm a little jealous. I pre-ordered my copy of Appleseed and I haven't gotten it yet. Now, I'm looking forward to it even more.

So does anyone remember the name of the other film I had mentioned? It has the word "blue" in the title I believe. I just remember reading a small blurb about it in Time magazine or something, but I believe it was another cell-shaded one like Appleseed, sci-fi oriented I think. It looked pretty cool from the pictures that I remember....

Don't forget the pretty good looking Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future, as well as the Dance Dance Revolution characters so far as I can see.

Just got this movie today. MAN, this movie has some awesome CGI. Sorry to say the pacing was a tad off and story was somewhat mediocre (dunno if I spelled that right). But everything else was just, wow. And the soundtrack was great techno stuff.

Dude, I saw the new Appleseed without seeing the old one. I really enjoyed watching it. It was really good and I'd watch it again!
