CAA: Christian Anime Alliance

From the Directer of Akira, comes a new movie called Steam Boy.

I saw it advertised in Shonen Jump, and it's rated pg-13 for action violence. Anyone know about it?

Well, looking at the title, from what I can deduce... it has to do with steam..
And a boy.

i've seen some ads on tv for it, patrick stewart (xmen, star trek: the next generation), anna pacquin (xmen), and alfred molina (spider man 2, Luther) do voices in the movie, i haven't heard any yays or nays though as far as how good it is, but the animation does look good

WORLD Magazine (the Christian equivalent of US News) gives it a 6 out of 10, I think, with moderate warnings for content.

A lot of professional film-critics gave the movie negative reviews...but that might be to blame on the fact that they saw the dubbed version which was 20 minutes shorter than the subtitled Japanese version which was released simultaneously.

So, how the crud did that happen?

I saw Akira and it was not a good one to cut your teeth on getting into anime. It's like gnawing on asbestos lined with glass shards. Akira paved the way for more adult anime, a mixed blessing since I enjoy more mature plots, but we probably have it to blame for the development of hentai as well.

As for Steamboy - the ads for it make it look tamer than Akira. I've got mixed feelings about watching it - as the voice talent is likely to be good and the animation is top notch. This could be a case of apples and oranges - Watch Hayao Miyazaki's Kikki's Delivery service and then immediately follow it up with Princess Mononoke for example, the two have a completely different tone to them. As I said, I'm kind of mixed over it; but at this point I wouldn't be against giving it a peek.

Just remember - if you go to the movies or rent - If it's too violent/gory/whatever - You CAN turn it off.

I did not like Akira. The nudity, violence, language (at least I know the subtitles used some strong words), new age stuff, etc. really bothered me. Not one I'd recommend.
However, I think Steamboy looks worth a shot. I haven't seen any reviews saying it was wow wow, most seem to think it was mediocre. But I still think it looks worth a watch, and the content looks alot better than Akira from what I can tell.
True, Kiki's and Mononoke are very different. Both fantastic movies, but very different in tone.

Hayao Miyazaki is my absolute FAVORITE artist/movie maker/person. XD

i absolutely ADORE his movies. all of them.

Most of the reviews of Steam Boy that I've heard have been disapointing as well, but you have to remember what sort of hype has been built up around this thing. Aside from the fact that it's "The Next motion picture from the legendary creator of AKRIA," the thing was in development for about a decade, and the studio made no seceret about the fact that they expected it to be the next Spirited Away. In the face of all that, Steam Boy's pretty much doomed to be viewed as a failure.

Still, I think it looks pretty cool. All the clips I've seen look fantastic and the voices rounded up for the dub are great. I'm definately gonna go see it when it finally makes it to a theater in North Carolina.

(oh, and as long as everyone is saying so, I haven't seen Akira either)

Steam Boy is awsome. I haven't watched the Japanese side yet, but the animation and voice acting is excellent. Oh I could go on forever about the animation. You have to see this movie. It was even true to it's rating.

I thought Steamboy was awful. And I can't imagine another 20 minutes of that overly long movie.

By the way, how can you blame Akira for hentai? O_o
Hentai's been there before Akira, believe me. If you want to blame one title for bringing hentai more into the mainstream, well, I won't say it here.

I found it to be neither good nor bad. It is merely average. It was however entertaining. The basic concept of the story was a little too far fetched for my tastes, but with the exception of maybe half an hour of exposition on the story, it is all action.

The animation was good. The style and designs of the machines was great. I, personally, wanted more plot and character development.

That's not to say I couldn't enjoy it, but I wanted more. And I wouldn't watch it over again, because the only thing I could watch it for would be the machines. And I already saw the machines.

Oh well, to each their own.

I saw it in the rental store. my first thoughts were "What the... what is a 'steam boy' anyhow?" I looked at it briefly, didn't read the summary on the back or anything, but it doesn't look interesting...

............... that's the word for it... interesting.

I was a bit disappointed after all of the hype, and I think they could have made it a little bit shorter... But overall not a bad movie. I still haven't watched it in Japanese.

Well, Otomo can put out good stuff. Look at Metropolis and Memories.

Metropolis is awsome.

language: a few swears here and there. relative to a mellow PG-13.

Sexual content: A spaceship crew member might have said one crass remark, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't that bad, if he even said anything.

nudity: half of a second total spaceship crew member(same one) looks at a nude photo of his girl friend. I swear, if you blinked you could miss it.

Other than that, it's an artsy, inspiring, emotional, sci-fi, very well animated, very recommended must-see Anime.

Like others have already said I too read from numerous reviews that steamboy is all action and no plot or character dev. If that's your thing then have at it. Sounds like they just spent too much money and time on effects to me. Oh well, here's to another 5 years of planning for that Akira director dude's next anime movie! *raises glass*
