I just saw Akira, and the ending is confusing. Could someone explain it to me from the last scene and on? Where did Tetsuo, Akira, and the three kids go? Just that whole last scene in general, when Kaneda holds the ball of light that was Tetsuo and on. Thanks.

Because only 2 of the 6 manga volumes were done, and he needed an ending. I recommend the manga over the anime...

Well could you explain it? I really don't want to have to buy the manga to understand the ending. ^^;

Beware that the manga is much more graphic, but the story is also good if you can get through it. Fair warning.

My limited understanding is that
Tetsuo and the kids converted into an existence of pure energy, not really dieing, but ceasing to be human.
That makes enough sense, thanks.

Soory I left you hanging. CDLViking pretty well got it right.
I saw it as evolving into a higher form
Also, my comment of the manga should be clarified: Katsuhiro Otomo seems to have felt bound to the anime ending, so he used it in the manga, even though it no longer fit (or seemed so to me). Still, the manga story is amazing and worth getting. If they re-released it unflipped, I'd buy it again.
