Don't know if anyone cares but the new Astroboy series (the one that got no love in the US) is coming to
DVD. It's a boxset of 50 episodes on five discs. I find it a bit strange that there is no Japanese language track though.

This was a good show. I saw this the other day at Bestbuy for $50. At a buck an episode, that's pretty darn good. It's a quality show.

Got my hopes up for nothing. If there's no Japanese language track, then it's not worth buying or even seeing to me. I'll wait to see the show when I move to Japan, unless I see it sooner via online or something.

I believe there are some import/bootleg region 0 dvd boxsets floating around the internet that ONLY include the japanese track. That's the best alternative to super pricey official imports.

Are they official DVDs or bootlegs?

Don't forget to add that the official creators/distributers also lose profits from this wonderful alternative, which is technically not legal anyways.
As for the region free DVD players... finding a good working low priced one off of eBay is a snap.

The show was all right by the dub. It's kinda like just a distorted shadow compared to the Japanese version. The editors cut out a whole slew of stuff. A lot about how Atomu acts human. You know, character development. They also cut out an episode in the English version and replaced it with a clip show... >_> I wish I could watch more of the Japanese version but then again... The Japanese animators asked advice from an American animator. They shouldn't have done that, even if the Japanese wanted to make the series as acceptable as they can to American audiences...
Well... The Japanese version still takes the cake though...
But, I would take the 1960's version any day. Humor and action. This version was nice but it just seemed... there was something... missing... Other than cutting out all of Tezuka's jokes, of course. ^^; The 1980's version was funny but I didn't really like the character designs...

And on that note, I'm sure alot of us have already heard that the original 1960s series wil be on DVD in the near future. Though, I'm sure there will be no Japanese language track, in which case it means nothing to me. >_<

The only DVD release that I know of is the Madman Entertainment version that they will probably release this year.

It seems as that Madman only has Region 4 DVDs, so that doesn't help much to most people without a Region 4 DVD player.
The dubbed English version of the 1960's Astro Boy wasn't all that bad (specially the uncut versions). The voice acting was awesome. They really got into character. Billie Lou Watt's voice was the best Astro Boy ever. A second place goes to the French dub's Astro Boy of the 1980's version. B)
