Has anyone watched it on FoxBox?

I have watched it. I must say that it is not the best though. The manga is much better. I do not really like the voice of Yoh, but we all have our different opinions.

I just watched it for the first time this morning, so I'm not quite sure what to think of it yet. My first impression was that it had the potential to be interesting, but not outstanding. Probably something I wouldn't mind watching, but not something I'd really get into that much. What about you, Sora, have you watched many episodes? What do you think?

I've seen only one episode, so my opinion is not as balanced as usual, and may be only evident in the one episode I saw and not representative of the series. But...

Of course, they messed around with the order of events. While I feel this is unnecessary, they actually didn't do a bad job of it, this time.

There was a fight, and there was fight coreography, not just alternating special attacks. Not the best, but far better than what I generally see. This alone makes me feel like giving it more consideration.

Ren's voice deserves a category in and of itself. I'm not one to get annoyed by odd voice actors, but this one did the trick.

Isn't Ren Chinese? Why in the world did they give him a quasi-British accent? I guess they think it makes the character more intimidating.

I thought it was an interesting show. I'm wondering how accurate the dub is to the original.

Yeah, Ren (or Len, I'll talk about this later) is completely Chinese. It might be more intimidating, but every time I hear it I can't escape the feeling there's a female voice actor speaking. That voice just doesn't seem normal.

I'm a bit annoyed they changed Manta to Mortiemer. Just because that name annoys me. Ren was changed to Len, but that's reasonable, as the character can be translated to R or L.

Actually, I find something rather amusing. Shaman King has to do with ghosts, death, and the Eastern concept of the spirit world. However, quite a few TV dubs generally try to avoid all references to death that they possibly can or at least tone it down. They changed kill to destroy in Gundam Wing, did the same thing in Digimon, and avoided all references to death in Yu-Gi-Oh by adding in "The Shadow World" and changing some scenes and skipping the entire first series.
I know the former two were done by different companies. Yu-Gi-Oh on the other hand was done by 4-Kids. They were most likely trying to make it another Pokemon and make it for younger kids considering how much it was butchered.

It is somewhat curious that 4-kids chose Shaman King...

Auron *__*

Yah cuz I read the Yu-Gi-Oh! Mangas that are out and they are from some series of Yu-Gi-Oh! we didn't see. In other words, it was more for teens-adults. (no porn but Joey did give Yugi a porn tape 0_o)

I've been watching it and I didn't really like them changing Manta's name, but the show doesn't seem too horribly done.(at least not yet. lol) I still like the manga better at the moment though.

Is the manga out in stores yet?

I don't know if the manga is available store wise, but Shonen Jump does have the graphic novel, I believe.

This in regard to death is somewhat interesting. If they're really trying to make this a kid's show, I wonder what they're going to do later on. Things get really dark at the later parts in the series, and we have a lot of unkidlike elements. Hmm...

yes the first manga book for shamanking is out in stores. And I hate the way that the compinies that bruoght the show always have to change the names of the characters like manta to mortameir :stressed:. But the manga is great :thumb: same with the yu gi oh manga. not the show, it sucks. :shady:

Very true, and also very likely. However, they'll have to cut out massive sections, or just seriously change the plot. People's souls get consumed (though that's changeable enough), a main character dies quite brutally.

A bit later on (both in the anime and the manga) Yoh fights Faust VIII. He has a weapon that looks like a large scalpel, and uses it to cut Manta's stomach open (while he's alive). Not exactly something for a children's show. But you're right, this can just be changed... some other elements, on the other hand, aren't as simple. It'd be a shame to see the plot ruined for the sake of a rating.

Interesting.

I can tolerate some edits but when they start changing aspects of the plot it really annoys me. I guess we can only see what they do to it although the fact that they butchered Yu-Gi-Oh isn't very reassuring in regards to Shaman King.

Question for UC: How graphic exactly was the Manta/Faust VIII scene?
Did it show a lot of blood? If so, the scene probably will be totally altered.

By the way, as Christians, what does everyone think of the show? The whole shaman thing and the ghosts and other elements of the show have the potential to be bothersome and offensive to Christians. Some Christian parents somewhere have likely already forbidden their kids from watching it. I was curious as to what everyone thought.

Shaman King was a great series. I am almost done with it. I am at the last episoide. But I do agree, I personally like the manga better. Otherwise, shaman king , in my option, is better then its rival, One Piece. :thumb:

To be honest, I don't really remember the level of graphicness. In any case, I really don't think they'd even suggest that. What annoys me about changes is that they snowball. If that doesn't happen, Yoh's motivation won't make sense, which means you'll have to change something else, which will mean you need to alter yet something else...

I agree that Shaman King is better than One Piece. By a long shot, in my personal opinion.

As a Christian, this series is right down the line as to what I feel comfortable watching. Obviously, I do feel that it is acceptable for me to watch/read it. However, I do feel that it's completely incompatible with Christianity.

Are you going from just the anime or the manga? Because later on in the series (where the anime hasn't gone yet) there are definite anti-Christian elements. Not anti, exactly, but it says that all the saviors of the world (including Jesus) are all merely Shaman Kings of the past. You see what I mean.

Man, this feels so much like a conversation I already had with Psycho Ann...

The manga is way better....I'm still mad that 4Kids got Shaman King, since they already ruined Yu-Gi-Oh, which is really good in the Japanese version (then again, that is my opinion) I don't like the name "Morty", nor do I like his voice. Ren's voice has to be one of the most horrible dub voices I have ever seen (aside from Malik's from Yu-Gi-Oh....it sounds like the Green Goblin!) Ugh...horrible british accent that Ren has, oh yes. I'll still have to watch a bit more, though....see if anything gets better...

I second that sentiment regarding 4Kids, though I've pretty much given up on watching the dub. If it's anything like Yu-Gi-Oh, it's not going to get better.

Well, the next two episodes are the Faust VIII ones and the first one is airing this weekend.

I'm worried as to how badly 4kids will edit it.

I don't even watch the dub anymore. I can't bear it. (Will they rename Faust?)

Of course, I have access to most of the manga published so far (I attempt translating for fun) and pretty much the entire sub series on DVD, so it's not like I'm missing much of anything. How many names have they changed in total so far?

Aka-chan wrote:I don't even watch the dub anymore. I can't bear it. (Will they rename Faust?)

I don't think they changed Faust's name. According to 1 or 2 sites, the english name for the episode is Faust VIII.
Of course, websites can be wrong...

Anyways, as I've stated before, I find the dub watchable enough to enjoy it.
The English SK voice actors aren't really bothering me. I can live with name changes although why they gave HoroHoro the very cheesy nickname Trey Racer is beyond me. His sister still calls him HoroHoro. HoroHoro isn't that hard a name to pronounce.
And since I don't have access to the original version, the dub is the best I can do. Plus, I read the unedited manga in Shonen Jump.

How many names have they changed in total so far?

They changed Manta to Morty and Ryu to Rio. Tao Ren/Len was kept as Len although everyone seems to call him Lenny. HoroHoro was given the "nickname" of Trey Racer as I stated above. Kororo was changed to Kory/Cory or however you spell it. Ryu's friends, Muscle Punch and Ball Boy, were changed to Magnet and B Boy. The others so far are kept about the same, I believe.

...although If you want specifics, I don't think they pronounce Amidamaru and Mosuke like they are supposed to.

*shrugs*
Typical 4kids dubbing job.

...everytime I see Kororo, I think Kokoro. o_o;

I was kinda disappointed they changed the names. I don't blame them for changing Jounouichi to Joey in Yuugioh (wow, would I LOVE to see an English VA pronounce that), but when a name isn't hard to pronounce, I don't think that they should change it.

Names changes also steal a bit from a series like Shaman King, where the characters come from all over the world to take part in the Shaman Fight. Names are a part of a charater's hertiage, just like it's a part of a person's heritage in real life. I know I'D be upset if people tried to change MY name, just because it's difficult for Americans (in general) to pronounce.
