Need a good lighthearted anime. Suggestions?

I've been looking over my anime collection (which is really not big
) and I've noticed that most of the anime I actually own is well...quite...deep and sad. March Break is coming up soon for me, and I am planning to get a good lighthearted anime that everyone can watch. I'm thinking about getting the four part OVA of You're Under Arrest and I've read previous reviews and there seems to be nothing really objectional. If you have any input or other suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

The four-part OAV for YUA! has very little objectionable in it, yes. I think there's one scene of Natsumi in less dignified attire in the whole thing, and it's very brief. It's a lot of fun, it has excellent animation, the dubbing is exceptional, and I think you'd enjoy it.
The TV series has some other concerns, although it's still enjoyable -- but it has a lot more fanservice and dodgy humour. I'll be writing full reviews presently. There's an even more recent TV series, but I haven't seen it (AnimEigo has not yet released it, although it's licensed); there is also a series of shorts, which are even more fanservicey, and then the movie, which is somewhat more grim.

i have watched some of you're under arrest at otakon. But i do not recall if it were an OVA or the tv series... i BELIEVE it was the tv series. Although from just a few episodes i've seen (around 4) it was very funny and i loved it.

Thank you! The You're Under Arrest OVA looks enjoyable and I hope to get it over the break. Any other lighthearted anime out there?

Azumanga Daioh is as lighthearted as you can get. It's extremely funny and it's main purpose is to make you laugh. I highly recommend it!

Urusei Yatsura is great comedy.
There are others, but appropriateness can be a problem: anime comedy can be ribald (stay far from Ping Pong Club and Mahoromatic..)
Incidently, with YUA, the OVA are technically counted as episodes 1-4 of the TV series, so it would be sold as "Disc 01" in the set from AnimEigo...

Yes, UY is great. Minimal nudity (only a couple times total that I can remember so far) and naughtiness.
Ranma is a favourite comedy of mine, but it does have nudity. For some reason it's never terribly struck me as fanservice (although this is not true of the OAVs), but this will still be a problem for some folks regardless. Avoid if it's is a stumbling block for you, because while it's not brimming with it, it's definitely there.

Well, for me, it never seemed so much as fanservice since most nude shots were of Ranma... and you knew he was a guy
I think with season 4, the nudity stopped...

I'll second the Ranma 1/2 suggestion, and its warning. I myself am more into deep or serious anime, but the following have a sort of blend of lightheartedness and deepness; Jubei-chan, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, and Trigun, in the order of seriousness.

I don't know if you'd like it or not, but the only other light-hearted anime I can think of is a new show on Toonami called Zatch Bell. it's quite funny, IMO.

Well, and also (I don't want to direct this into a discussion on what constitutes fanservice, but anyway), there wasn't any particular emphasis on his (her) figure. In the TV YUA! (not the OAV), when Natsumi is in her pasties, the camera lingers where it shouldn't, even though she isn't nude. Likewise, in Ranma OAV #1, when Shampoo is in the shower ... well, that was unnecessary.
There's a couple shots in Ranma season 5, but yeah, very little from then on.
Okay, I'm done.

"Ground Defense Force Mao-Chan" is probably as lighthearted as any cutesy anime can get. Also "Stellvia" is another good choice if you need a sci-fi setting to go with the lightheartedness.

There's nothing more light-hearted than Metropolis.
(I'm being sarcastic).
Try Dai-Guard. It's silly, and I don't remember much objectionable content. Speed Racer...
Yeah.

Considering your avatar, I'd think Jubei-chan the Ninja Girl would be a good fit. I will also second Azumanga Daioh as one of my favorites that certainly is not heavy.
I have nothing more to add to Ranma, but I liked it, too.
I will also add for consideration My Neighbor Totoro. It's geared for younger audiences, but it is a light hearted and fun movie sure to lift your spirits.

I've got four Ranma 1/2 mangas. It's pretty hilarious especially the number of times they use the Ranma switches sexes gag in each story. The first one I got was the
Shakespeare storyline where he thinks the grand prize for winning a drama contest is a trip to China.
