That would be Future Boy Conan. It was the first TV series Hayao Miyazaki directed.
It has never been released in the United States.

If it ever is released, I'll be sure to see it. Miyazaki rules.

Expect to see the name changed. "Conan" has been copyrighted in the US since the 1930's...

"Future Boy Conan" is admittedly the direct inspiration for "Castle in the Sky" although the plot is slightly different. Essentially the same, essentially different. Here is the plot-outline I got from IMDB.com
The story takes place in the 21st century, 20 years after World War 3. The world as we know it has been destroyed, and 12 year old Conan lives on an island with his grandfather, believing they are the only two survivors of the war. But one day Conan discovers an unconscious girl on the beach. She is 11 year old Lana, and she's fleeing from the evil rulers of Industria, who want to kidnap her and use her as a bait to convince her grandfather (who has fled from Industria himself) to give up the lost secret of solar energy, which would allow Industria to rule over the world. After Lana is kidnapped from the island, Conan decides to rescue her and sets sail to Industria.
Also according to the Internet Movie Database this TV-series aired in 1978 before Miyazaki would go on to direct "The Castle of Cagliostro" the following year.

From the title it would be easy to confuse it with Detective Conan(Case Closed here).I think the reason it would have to be changed if it were shown here is because of Robert E. Howard's Conan The Barbarian.
aside:Conan is a Celtic name.
