Has anyone ever heard of this anime? also known as "Gankutsou". I've read the novel and while this anime is a sci-fi version of the story, I've heard it is quite faithful to the book and the animation, though unusual, is GORGEOUS!!!! made by studio Gonzo (wheeeeee!) it's fairly new, only about 10 or 11 episodes, and has already gotten good reviews.

any thoughts, questions or comments?

I watched the first episode after it came out. The animation drove my eyes crazy for a while, but once I got used to it, I really liked it. And I loved the opening theme. None of the characters really interested me, though, so I didn't pursue it further. Would you say I should?

And, it's called Gankutsu Ou or Gankutsuou, Osaka.

How old is it? I'm having flashbacks to the few episodes of "Rose of Versailles" I caught at Oni-Con. *shudders*

If it's not too terribly outdated, I'd probably be interested in seeing it too. I hope it's better than the book itself; I'm a great Dumas fan (er, was at one point anyway) and I still hated it. :shady:

And you're alive to tell the tale!? You're braver than I am. I have a friend who is simply infatuated with Rose of Versaille. She has all the manga and she almost bought a live action movie.*thinks about a Rose of Versaille movie and gets sick*

Oh, and I was just browsing around and it seems it's a recent work of Gonzo. Looks promising.

It's Gonzo's most recent work, which means it is still being aired in Japan, I believe.

Studio Gonzo does tend to make some good anime, so it does sound promising.

ok, that sounds like a really good anime, maybe some suit down at turner will get the wild idea in his head to air it on cartoon network, or at least on adult swim or somethin'

I read the book and gave it a "meh." But seeing it in anime form definitely sounds like something worth checking out.

I read the original book, too. I quite enjoyed it... but like some other classics I'd read it takes AGES to get interesting.

I liked the movie, too - but the ending was WAY not what happened in the book. Kind of understandable, though - the book'd take perhaps 2/3 movies.

Whoa - I'd love to see the anime for it, though. It'd be interesting, and possibly very, very cool.

Like I said, it seems to be rather faithful, but from a different character standpoint (Albert's, not the Count's) and starts in the middle of the story, when Albert first meets the Count. The original chars all seem to be there as well, which is good because the recent movie sorely lacked Haydee. (Bad movie! Bad! Bad!) That, and the original style of animation, and a sci-fi setting...I can't wait!!!

It's new. If you watch it, watch 3-4 episodes before you decide. The first one you see, it's "aaagh! the weird patterns that don't move with the people!" and by the fourth, it's "you know, once you get used to it, this series doesn't look too bad."

I like the series.

OH MAN!! The Count of MC was my FAVORITE book we ever had to read in high school! Everyone in class seemed to think so too. What a great story; I couldn't put it down! I bet it makes for great anime! The movies I've seen left most of it out and added a bunch... But you say it's pretty close? I'd like to see it! ^_^

I think that I'll check out the series when/if it gets licensed. I'm reading the book right now. So far, not to interesting but I'm only in the second chapter so I'm still giving it a chance. Even if I get halfway through the book and still find it boring, I'm going to make myself finish it.

I didn't know about anything like this was even out there. I love classic books and anime, so a combination of the two! Wow! I am really gonna have to check this one out.

Euh.. I have a magazine that gave a news article on it, it's very small. It doesn't say anything that well, but I will just translate, just in case.

(c) Mahiro Maeda-- Gonzo/Media Factory-- GDH
*Debut 5 October 2004, 2:12 on TV Asahi
*Offical site: http://www.gankutsuou.com

To escape his boring life, the vice count Albert de Morcef, son of a rich noble of Paris, takes a voyage interplanetary with his friend Franz d'Epinay. It brings them right to Luna, where they meet the Count of Monte Cristo, on which there are many rumours: extra-terrestrial, monster, vampire? What ever it is, Albert is fascinated with the charisma that released from the Count, who leads a life surrounded by superb women. At the occasion of the carnaval and his public execution (?), the Count proposes to Albert to play cards in order to save one of the condemned to death (?). The young man accepts this risk, but so falls with no doubt into a complicated position.

The studio Gonzo astonishes us once again with its penchant to alter the anecdotic with series such as Vandread, Bakuretsu Tenshi or Gravion, and the original, such as Last Exile and this series, Gankutsuô. Here, they seem to have left the green light to Mahiro Maeda (Blue Submarine #6, Final Fantasy: Unlimited) for a psychedelique futurist interpretation of Alexandre Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo. A work that is taken by a choice of innovant colours and transparent textures that are applied on the characters. The result is shimmering and bewitching, and we wait with impatience the continuation to verify if all this isn't just dust to the eyes.

I'm sorry, this isn't very much, and my translation is horrible~

It's a very good series, I'm rather well addicted to it. The textures will throw you off at first but once you get into the story which really starts to unfold you completely forget about it. Though there are times when it just sticks out, but in a good way. (as the series progresses the crazy use of textures declines a good bit)

Been awhile since Gonzo has put out a series of this caliber.

OMIGOSH I love this series. It made me read the book (I'd be done with it by now but I've been lazy >.>)
The graphics almost made me dump it at first but I made myself get through a few episodes. By that time I was hooked and the textures didn't bother me as much. I'm totally used to it now, and once they get back to Paris the patterns are far less drastic.

I want to watched it very much, now. i went to the website and the art is so original and beautiful. I like the way they use the textures instead of plain colours. It makes every picture so interesting to look at.

But I'm disappointed since it just came out, it will be a long time before I can watch it in language.

p.s. thank you Mangafanatic, don't worry, you said it fine! :)
