You've seen Samurai X, but have you seen Rurouni Kenshin?

Samurai Champloo is my pick of the litter when it comes to anime of the genre.

Super Milk Chan?

Tsukikage Ran.
Jubei-chan is sort of a modern take on the samurai blended with zany comedy.

Not many good anime. Hakkenden was probably the best I've seen. You're better off with live action movies:
Zatoichi (Takeshi Kitano version)
Sure Death
Lone Wolf and Cub
Azumi (import R2 only)
[Warning: The above are the equivalent of the R rating]
Then there are classics like "Seven Samurai", Chushingura (Tale of the 47 Ronin), the Miyamoto Musashi trilogy and the like

I second Seven Samurai! Best samurai film, if not the best film, ever made.
If you can handle it, Kill Bill volume 1 has some nifty samurai stuff.
Also, if you can handle it, check out Versus. More guns and such, but some of the coolest samurai-fights I've seen.
I believe the films called "Samurai I/II/III" are very good, but I haven't seen them.
As for anime... Er.. Kenshin? Champloo? Tsukikage? Jubei? S'all good.

I second Tsukikage Ran and Jubei-chan and I will add the Ninja Scroll TV series to the list.

Make sure it's the TV series.
Samurai I/II/III are the Musashi Miyamoto series. Very good, but it can be kind of slow. I believe each one won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film when they came out. They are classics of the genre. The third movie is even parodied in Irresponsible Captain Tylor.

Another live action Samurai film to check out is Samurai Fiction. Though I haven't seen it yet, I've heard good things, and they sound..good.
It's a sort of funky, cool Samurai film. Not a parody, just a bit more light-hearted and goofy, yet it is filmed in the old-school black & white akin to Kurosawa's classics.
I haven't seen this either, but apparently "Samurai 7" is decent. It's supposedly a futuristic take on Seven Samurai. May God save us.

As far as Kurosawa movies go you can't go wrong with Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Hidden Fortress, and Kagemusha those are the best in my book. Also I'm a big Musashi nut I've read the book by Eiji Yoshikawa twice and the Book of Five Rings. The three Samurai movies are really good you're in luck too Amazon is offering the box set for $55.

Samurai fiction is good, but it does contain a bit of implied homosexuality.

Then you probably want to skip "Taboo" (which is about the shinsengumi (sp?) that shows up in RK anime)

Peacemaker Kurogane, is another quality samurai anime, but if your wanting a pure action, samurai one that maybe stay away, theres alot of character developmet episodes with little or no fighting, but when the final big fight comes around, its stunning. It also follows hte historical side of the Shinsengumi quite well, (apart from some weird side plots...) but i love it.

Just seeing the screencaps from that one made me cry. >.<; I heard it was pretty bad, content wise. I'd definitely say you're better off not seeing that one.

I heard Peacemaker Kurogane has some yaoi implications- anyone know for sure? Btw, I'm glad to have found this thread! I like samurai movies, but I have a hard time finding titles! I tend to come in half way through things.

I haven't seen Peacemaker myself, but being an former fanfiction writer, I can tell you that people can find yaoi/yuri in ANYTHING, so I'd recommend quickly skimming something before deciding whether you want to read it or not..

It does not! There is one character who likes cute things and he implies that Hijitaka and Tetsu are a couple but it is NOT meant to be taken seirously. Where did you here that?

Apart from that weird necromancer guy, he was pretty homosexual i'm sure, (p.s. he is weird) but its a stunning anime, and no yuoi thingy stuff,

I'm glad to hear it isn't yaoi. This is what I get for trusting my sources, second and third hand reviews and some really twisted fansites. >again is very glad to have found CAA!

Yeah. I rented it because I liked Takeshi Kitano in Battle Royale and Zatoichi. This one was pretty bad though. Maybe Violent Cop was worse, but not by much

It'll make more sense if you've seen the TV series first, at least up to Saito.

There really needs to be a sticky post about watching out for bootleg anime. I've seen alot of posts lately of people that are getting deceived.

Hmm, I've seen very few samurai anime, and the ones I have seen have already been posted...well, except Samurai Deeper Kyo.
But that's one I wouldn't recommend....I personally didn't like it after watching a few episodes (I watched it after reading a few manga volumes).
You might like it, as it has a good amount of action and a pretty nifty storyline, I don't think on a moral issue it isn't that bad of a problem (generally just violence), but I didn't like it because of the overall quality ( pretty poor animation, some blandish art). But if that doesn't bother you, you might want to check it out.

yeah, kenshin has the FX on it, is it bootleg, or import, cuz i herd people go to japan and buy the cheap versions, not bootlegs, and sell it for more here
