Looks like http://www.viz.com has Maison Ikkoku DVD set #4 for purchase finally. However, I'm hearing from my Very Reliable Local Source(tm) that they are only offering it for sale through Viz, not through any other channel.

You mean the company that produces it hasn't had it in stock until now. I preordered Box Set 4 about 6 months ago (and it came with the nifty Piyo Piyo T Shirt as an extra incentive to preorder it). I received it in November.

There are two places, and only two, that you can get the Maison Ikkoku Box Sets now. One of course is Viz. The other is through RightStuf, which is where I preorder mine from. In fact, you can preorder Box Set 5 now at RightStuf and it's usually cheaper than Viz. In fact, every once and awhile RightStuf will have a Viz sale where their products are 40% off (even preorder items). I got Box Set 4 for a little over $29.00. I've been kind of holding off on Box Set 5 to see if another sale comes up. However as Box Set 5's release date of May 17th draws closer I'll have to break down and get it.

Yeah, so will I. I was going to buy the Furuba artbox from them anyway, so I might as well toss this on there too. Going broke saving money!

OH, I want to see this series so bad! It's been on my list for a while along with "Kimagure Orange Road TV and OVA's". Though having 96eps... Do y'all know if it tends to drag at times? Is it like Love Hina type genre? If only I had to money... All in time, all in time

It seems to get really good reviews from most people. For example: At animetempy.com, Maison Ikkoku got 5 reviews for the total score is a 4.8 out of 5. Not too shabby.

It's nothing like Love Hina. Maison Ikkoku can be very funny, very melancholy, very romantic, very down to earth in regard to the relationships. There are no robots, magical girls, or space aliens. It as simple as a college student who falls in love with his young apartment manager and having to deal with rivals for that love while trying to keep his nosey, obnoxious neighbors out of his life as much as possible. It's one of the few shows that keeps pretty much to the manga without a whole lot of filler (although I am sure there is one or two episodes here or there). To tell you the truth I have never felt it drag during it's run, but I am sure others will disagree on that. I feel that in the question of character development, it is one of Takahashi's best works.

Likes: I really enjoy slice of life titles and this is one of the best. Dislikes: A great deal of drinking is portrayed along with one of the characters constantly wearing a nightgown that is somewhat revealing.

I also highly recommend Kimagure Orange Road. While Maison Ikkoku is my number 1 favorite title, KOR comes in a close second.

I've never felt that Maison Ikkoku drug, either. Not in the anime or the manga, but for those who are accustomed to action titles, well, this one isn't. It's the best romantic comedy I've ever seen, though and I highly recommend it for folks who loved Hina or Ai Yori Aoshi.

I wouldn't say it nothing like Love Hina, though. I believe Maison Ikkoku was barrowed heavily from to make Love Hina, only with the more ridiculous stuff tossed in on top. If you've seen both, did you notice the Maison Ikkoku parody scene in Love Hina's opennig titles?

It was somewhere around epsiode 13 or so when I noticed it. I laughed out loud, drawing odd looks from my friend who was watching with me.

Is there much fanservice in this title? *Is starting to get VERY curious.*

Sorry, I still don't know what you are eluding to and I don't have Love Hina around to check.

In regard to fanservice, yes there is some mostly towards the beginning of the series with Akimi, one of the residents who wears a see through nightie. However, this tends to lessen as the series moves on. But still, you will find it here and there but it is much like Ranma 1/2 and not very graphic.

I wish I could find a screen capture of it so I could show you. I looked for one, but came up dry. Perhaps I can come up with one of my own this weekend.

Fan service is present, even somewhat common, but very manageable. Not at all like Love Hina or Ai Yori Aoshi, or any other one with frequent trips to the hot springs.

Awesome, thanks for all that input, now I want to see it even more. Like the Rev, I love the "slice of life" type of stories. To me, it thend to has more of an impact on the overall story and feelings/emotions. I think I should give this series a try. Next time I goto the anime-rental place I believe I'm going to pick up the first volume and see what it's like.
Also, is it me or do the old school animes tend to always have a strong story. *shrugs*

That would be really helpful. When I hear about fan service like this, I always imagine the worst.

I got Maison Ikkoku down as one of the manga I have to buy one of these days.
I'm a great fan of Inuyasha and also the Ranma 1/2 manga so I think it be interesting to see how MI compares to Rumiko Takasahi's two most popular
series.

The anime is tamer than the manga, however. I haven't read much of the manga, but I know some of it was toned down (or dropped entirely) from the TV series.

I wouldn't really call what's in there fanservice in the modern sense. The closest it comes is Akemi, who is easily ignored (and the series gets over it pretty quickly).

Definately. People do it all the time. I would cancel that order tonight and then just reorder sometime tomorrow or the next day to avoid any confusion.

I just preordered mine. $29.99 plus $4.00 shipping for a total of $33.99. Not too bad since it's original price is $49.99.

Nor did I. What I would do is get your order number, call their toll free number (1.800.338.6827) and tell them you wish to cancel a preorder item. Then just go back on line after it is canceled and reorder.

You might be able to get them to apply the sale price instead of the cancel/re-order route. They're generally pretty easy to work with.
