What are some of the most depressing anime series or movies of all time?
Here's my votes:
 • Geneshaft
 • Gundam SeeD (I'm not finished with it yet, but it's getting there)
 • Full Metal Alchemist (ditto)
 • Gundam Wing
 • Wolf's Rain
 • Galxy Express 999 movie
 • Metropolis
 • Memories episode 1 "Magnetic Rose"

Story wise, Wolf's Rain was a serious downer for me. x_x; Fushigi Yuugi was pretty bad too, and Yami no Matsuei. There are a couple of other series that kinda get to me for some very personal reasons, but let's not talk about that here, shall we? ^^;

Most drama anime are depressing or have a depressing theme I mean the main character or one of the main characters dies which is sometimes so annoying. . .one of the most depressing to me was Chrno Crusade

Overall, or what?

Personally I vote for Magic Knight Rayearth. It was a light-hearted and amusing series, but the last episode was...WOW. Man, did that depress me. If you've seen it, you know what I mean. (By the way, I feel the ending for MKR was the best ending I've ever seen in an anime; as such, I refuse to watch MKR II, as a sequel was unnecessary and merely a ploy to make more money, IMHO.)

Arc the Lad wasn't a magical, wonderful, happy anime either. Though I much prefer the game's storyline to the anime's, both are equally depressing. I almost cried at the end of Arc the Lad 2...it was so sad...

That's all I can think of, honestly.

The ending to Shin Getter Robo Armageddon. It made absolutely zero sense. But I did get to see Jupiter cut in half.

Giant Robo is very sad.

The ending to Casshan....Happy sad.

GI Joe: The Movie

Gundam W: Endless Waltz

How can you say MKR II is just a money making ploy when it's based on the second half of the manga that CLAMP wrote? Now the Rayearth OVA I could see as a money making scheme. If you liked the depressing ending of season 1 then I think you might like season 2. It's much darker and more serious than season 1. At times the amount of stress the girls are put through is almost Evangelion like ^_^. The MKR series does rank up there with some of the best depressing animes. some others that I think are really depressing

Evangelion
Sailor Moon: I know some might say "huh", but at times it can be very depressing. Just watch the end of season 1 or season 5, or read the manga.
Teknolyze
X
Yugioh: Same as with Sailor Moon. Some of the episodes, at least in the uncut version, are very dark. Almost all of the Doom saga is depressing
Escaflowne
Kare Kano: Half of it is light hearted comedy, but the rest is Evangelion-like angst.

I knew there was a second series in the manga, but I had never read it. As I said, the ending was so shocking and sad and awesome that I had no interest in reading it...it should've ended as it did. However, if you say the second season is darker and more serious, I think I shall check it out, then. After all, you are quite a knowledgable fellow. ^^

Sailor Moon: I know some might say "huh", but at times it can be very depressing. Just watch the end of season 1 or season 5, or read the manga.

I wouldn't say that...Stars did have its moments...however, I'd have to say the darkest and most depressing part of Sailor Moon was the latter half of S...especially the episode where Saturn appears. Not that the last few episodes of Stars were a walk in the park either. ^^;;

Oh, I'd also like to throw in the second half of Mahoromatic. The last two episodes were EXTREMELY depressing...I didn't like how it ended, but...

*Walks off muttering*

The entire world that Now and Then, Here and There is set in is depressing, but the main character Shu is so hopeful and full of spirit that it's almost paradoxical. IMHO Best. Anime. Ever.

Yeah I'd have to agree with CDLViking. Now and Then, Here and There. If not for Shu nobody would be allowed to watch it when sharp object were around ^_^ And it is one of the, if not the best, anime ever. Samurai X: Reflections...Second saddest movie I've ever seen...Only Grave Of The Fireflies beats it out. Saddest movie I ever done seen.

I can only parrot what others have said, although I don't know that "depressing" is a word I'd use if I were to mention great stories like Grave of the Fireflies or Now and Then, Here and There or even Fushigi Yugi. The stories had sad elements to them, but they were also uplifting.

However, if I were to think of depressing anime, I'd have to agree with Kae as the end of MKR would really made one question what she had been fighting for in the first place.

Watching Yu-Gi-Oh! always depresses me, but not for the same reasons.

So thinking about how series depressed me in this light, the most depressing series to me was Escaflowne (although Nescaflowne helped me cope - anyone seen it?)
I felt they wrapped up the series nicely at one point, but I was then shocked to learn there was still another 2 DVD's in the series. I became nervous, what were they going to do with the extra episodes? My trepidation was well founded. Enhanced luck soldiers? Fate altering engines? Atomic bombs dropped from balloons? Most depressing, but no comparison to what the story still had in store for me. I didn’t think it could get anymore depressing after revelation that the madman who had hounded our heroes throughout the series was actually the long lost sister of one of those heroes. *shivers* That made the evil-emperor-turns-out-to-be-Sir-Isaac-Newton plot twist pale in comparison. But the coupe de grace, the ultimate depressing thing of the series… I mean, the Hitomi chick really should have been prosecuted as a war criminal seeing how she created the whole mess with her tarot card readings, but really… She and Van spend (as is typical of many anime series) the whole series loving and hating each other. Then, as expected, they finally realize that they were made for each other. They are soul mates, and as the realization of this dawns on each of them, they pronounce their undying love for each other. Surely, all will be made right because they have found true love. And upon the confession of her unyielding love and devotion to Van, she hops the next light beam home, never to see him again. Most depressing.

BAD STORY. BAD. NO BISCUIT.
nooo....Wolf's Rain isn't depressing! It's beautifully sad. haha, right now that's a serious contender for my favourite anime. But i still have a far ways to going in seeing stuff so I can't really speak.

Witch Hunter Robin has some really depressing moments. seriously. But I love it as well, minus the ending which was kinda frustrating. LoL. oh well. what can I say....I like closure.

um...Blue Gender was somewhat depressing. look @ how many people died lol.

o.O I think all my favourite series have depressing elements and that's why I like them. LoL. *weird* man....and now I really really want to watch some. :( limited watchability is evil.

Nah, the most depressing thing about that series was the totally screwed up two-part finale that just screamed forced ending. :hits_self

I think you can find it at most Blockbusters.

I'm curious where you thought the show should have ended Termyt.

I got some in no particular order:

Fullmetal Alchemist (Animenfo Description) because the people behind the anime sure knew how to raise emotions from the viewers, the range going from anger to sadness. Especially the episodes

If you follow the dubs only, don't click!
where Nina's father transmutes her into a chimera (Nina's dog + Nina) made me pretty mad (That was in Episode 4 if I remember correctly). Another really sad moment was when Colonel Hughes get's shot by Envy :( (Don't remember the episode though ]

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (Animenfo Description)
Wow, episode two is really sad: The main guy Takayugi starts to date Mizuki's friend Haruka (he likes Mizuki in the beginning though). After a while he falls in love with Haruko, everything is good and at the end of episode two Haruka gets over run by a car at their rendevouz point because Takayugi arrived late (he met Mizuki and bought her a ring as a birthday present, thus the delay). After that he blames himself that Haruka fell into coma.
Even worse: After Haruka lies in coma, Mizuki and Takayugi get together and everything is well until Haruka awakens from her coma. What to do now? ^^;
Now and then, here and there (Animenfo Link)
This anime is pretty disturbing; it depicts a guy who gets transported in another world where water is scarce because he wanted to protect some girl (Lala-Ru). He arrives at a battle ship called Hellywood and is taken prisoner. The ship's dictator Hamdo figured that if they had Lala-Ru's power of creating water he could conquer some countries and tries to "persuade" her into helping him by torture. If that wasn't bad enough, they didn't torture Lala-Ru but a girl that got mistaken for her :/ . *figures that explaining everything in detail would be too much*
To cut things short: A very disturbing and sad anime that shows us how cruel human can be (child rape, children getting tortured, children being recruited into the army, children who shoot themselves).
I recommend watching atleast 4-5 episodes of this series and see for yourself.

And the last one: Some parts of Naruto are pretty sad too. I.e. the Zabuza arc or Naruto's character background.

Full Moon Wo Sagashite, hands down. I have never cried so much in a single series. For a week afterwards, if I even heard piano music I'd fight the sniffles. ;__;

Personally, I'd nominate Jin-Roh.

Gundam Wing is depressing? Really? I understand Seed, but Wing? Hmmm...

Gundam Seed is depressing and sad because it deals with war and in war good
people on both sides die as in Seed.What really depresses me most about it
is my favorite character dies in the end.

Silent Mobius has some rather depressing eps.Mostly dealing with Katsumi's fate,
although ultimately it works out well for her,still it can be a real gut wrencher to
watch especially the final 6 eps.

While maybe not depressing I have noticed that as the seasons go on the dub for
Yugioh gets darker.However the manga is darker still.

Gungrave is pretty depressing to watch.

Ah ! I love X/1999 ^_^ ! It's not horrible, you just have to understand the series >_>.....either that or have an undying love of Kamui XD

A sad series in my opinion would be :
- Ceres: Celestial Legend [ Its amazing how 5 seconds can ruin an entire series ;.; ]
- Samurai X [ Any one of them ;.; I ALWAYS TEAR UP ]
- Peacemaker [ Not the ending per se, but parts of it made me bawl >_>; ]

NOTICE : NONE OF THESE SERIES ARE OWNED BY ME. I ABHOR Sad things. I HATE TO CRY. o_o 2 out of three are owned by one person e_e She on the other hand LOVES TO CRY. YOU ALL MAY KNOW OF HER AS ' Yeito '. All I have on my shelf is happy funny shows XD; ..
