bad anime

Postby Nia-chan » Fri Sep 05, 2003 4:06 am

I'm one of those people usually don't like to watch anime unless it's been sort of approved.(I'm still confused about somethings in anime bother some people more than others) I was wondering if anyone could give me anime to avoid in case I ever see it. I don't want to watch anything bad...
And is full metal panic safe to watch?

I hope this isn't a dumb topic..

I think the position you've taken is very admirable, Nia-chan. ^_^ It's all too easy to slip into watching anime that wouldn't be appropriate for whatever reason. I guess the question is, what kinds of things do you call "inappropriate"? You're right, people have varying views regarding content in anime. I'd suggest starting out by reading a few of the threads in the Anime and Anime Reviews section here, since the topics tend to be pretty balanced in terms of content review. It's a bit difficult to give you a list of anime to avoid, but I'd be happy to tell you some wonderful shows that I've enjoyed. ^_^

Oh, by the way, I don't know anything about Full Metal Panic, sorry... ^^;;;;

Two things that comes to mind for me to avoid are EVA and Beserk.

There is nothing remotely objectionable that I've seen in Full Metal Panic. It's a pretty good series too (I've seen up to the third DVD).
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Okay, danke! :) I was just wondering about full metal panic because in one of the episodes they show one of the girl characters(don't know her name) in a skimpy swim suit (ugh! why do they always have girls wearing two pieces? :stressed: :shady: :mutter: :shake: :bang: :comp:
 So not necessary!) I'm a girl and I hate seeing stuff like that... is that one of the things that bother some people and not others?

Well, a lot of girls wear bikinis, and the story does take place at a more or less average high school.

I'm opposed to hentai. That's one place where I draw the line: pointless, plotless, worthless sexual content heavily offends me as a Christian, as a writer myself, as a human being.

I have no problem with implication as long as it's done tastefully and there's some reason for it, but explicit depiction or content that fits one of my above descriptors is something I never want to see.

Another place where I draw the line is at language that is incredibly disproportionate to the situation and extreme. i.e. characters screaming the F word every other minute, at some minor inconvenience. As a Christian, I'm uncomfortable with this, as a writer I'm absolutely disgusted because it shows a lack of intellect and thought in writing.

Otherwise, I'm not at all very conservative or easily offended, especially when it comes to fanfic (note the loss of my old AntiYaoiFangirls banner).

Please don't ban me. -^.^-

I haven't seen very much, only the stuff that comes on Cartoon Network, so my knowledge of questionable anime is limited.

Gundam Wing is good, and Trigun is good. Haven't seen too much of Bebop yet, but I liked it from what I did see.

I've heard that you don't wanna see Neon Genesis Evangelion, but I've never seen it myself.

Trigun - :)
Gundam Wing - :)
Bebop - :)

Bebop is enjoyable, though there are bad things in it, especially in one of the eps. "Jupiter Jazz part 1" *Shudder* Next time I watch the series, I'm definately skipping that ep., and if you are thinking of getting Bebop, Nia-chan, I would suggest the same. (or skip the last min. of the ep.)

NGE (don't get me wrong, I don't mean to judge the series, but I'm going by what I've heard) - :shady:

Well, the show... It's got a heavy dose of fanservice, and some say it's where the term originated from (but I don't think that's true... I seem to remember talking about fanservice in the earliest days of my anime fandom, in refference to "Project A-ko" the Queen Mother of fanservice)

Besides that, it has barbie-doll ism ala Sailormoon, though a little worse. Oh, and I think there is a sex scene that doesn't show anything directly.

What bugs people most about the show are the biblical refferences. Evangelion is a Greek theological term meaning "Message." Of course, "Angels" sticks out like a sore thumb. There's a very seductive woman who wears a cross, there's talk of adam, eve, and lillith (which is from extra-biblical lore... Adam's "other" wife.) Nerv's symbol is a fig-leaf, which connects to the "adam" thing, the computer running nerv is called the magi (in refference to the 3 wisemen) And, oh yeah, there are 3 main units in the Magi. Rei is considered the untainted (sinless) human being, because... well, I ain't gonna spoil it even if I'm telling you not to watch...

The show goes from slapstick silly in the beginning (though decidedly not a parody in any way...) to dark and creepy towards the end. I feel like the last two episodes fixed the problem I had towards the end of the show.

Then I saw End of Evangelion. I couldn't watch it all at once, it honestly made me sick. However, I'm one that I won't judge a series or movie until I'd seen it all the way through (porn excluded, mind you) So I sat through 10 to 15 minute chunks until I finished it... After finishing it, it left me depressed and sick for days. I could not get it out of my mind. It was the sickest, most twisted thing I'd ever seen. (and I'd seen episode 26 of excel, puni puni poemi, goldenboy, sakura diaries, and some other bad anime, so that's saying a lot... of course those were just dirty...)

So, yeah, I'd say don't watch it even for review purposes. If you're young and don't get the stuff that's going on, you may not understand my hatred for this, but please don't test it... It could leave you permanently scarred...

As far as anime to aviod, I think what it should come down to in the end is you and God, not what anyone else says or their opinion. You need to talk with the Lord, and find in your heart what you can handle at this point in your faith. And that is completely different things for different people. For instance, I had no problem with End of Eva. I didn't think it was that great, I wouldn't go back and watch it a second time, but it didn't bother me much either. However, some people would be much more affected by it. It goes back to what really impacts you, tempts you, etc. personally.

I don't think reading reviews and heeding cautions from other Christians is necessarily wrong, I just don't think you should base your judgment on all the reviews you hear or you might miss some pretty good anime. I'll say again--feel free to listen to others' opinions, but the final say goes to God, and what He teels you personally.

All that being said, I'm going to offer one opinion...
Stay away from hentai. That's where I draw the line. Read Milly Fan's post, that pretty much sums up how I feel on the subject as well.

Stay far far away from Puni Puni Poemi (I never saw it but I've read reviews) it is apparently full of lesbian innuendo and several lesbian touching scenes with UNDERAGE GIRLS. It also contains horribly tasteless jokes and a PARODY CRUCIFIXATION (I've seen the screenshots of that and I was pretty steamed). The series is supposed to be parody but ther is no excuse for what they show. Also stay away from:

Noir, it's body count is massive and it contains strong lesbian undercurrents between the "heroes" and later an actual lesbian scene.

Cowboy Bebop: I've seen a lot of the episodes and they are entertaining but the show is so nihilistic and every character lives by atheist standards and most of them probably are atheists.

Pokemon, Yugioh, Transformers Armada, SD Gundam: Adults won't be affected by these shows but if you show it to kids it has been proven it will suck them into the occult (There have been studies on christian sites).

Harry Potter: Not an anime but STAY AWAY my little sister got into it and she follows =WICCA= now and some of her friends are JEWISH.

Just a few more words to add to Bobtheduck's post regarding Eva. ^_^ Yep, I'd recommend that you would shy away from it, based on the opinions you've expressed. ^_^ My local anime club was showing Evangelion as its premeir, and even though I went into it knowing a lot about the series, I was a little surprised with the level of open fanservice. ^^

There are several theological references that are pretty skewed, as Bob mentioned... for instance, the quite sarcastic phrase, "God's in His heaven, all's right with the world" is written next to the NERV logo (did that put anyone else off, or was it just me? ^^; Maybe I'm overreacting ^^), and the title itself, "Neon Genesis Evangelion" translates into "The New Good News" or "The New Message" as Bob put it.

Satsuki you need to tone it down...not all anime is evil as you so claim...One question...if Pokemon is evil...and leads to the occult...why do you use Ash and Picachu in your sig? Thats kind of curious. As for the anime you listed...while some might be bad...Cowboy Bebop is fine...I own that anime and would watch it with my friends or anyone...little language...and a few odd scenes...but there is not a heavy nihilistic undertone....In case you missed it...99% of anime have a do your own thing vibe...same in video games and everything in this world pretty much...and one more thing. Someone cannot be Nihilistic and be an Atheist at the same time....look the meanings up on those words before you toss them around. Please stop this senceless spamming now...this is a warning

I was being sarcastic, I read the rules and it said all religions besides Christianity were sinful, you guys forgot to include Judaism.

Anyway I think Pokeman is cute but I heard it has negative effects on kids. Bebop is too violent for me and Spike doesn't seem to care about anyone but himself and Julia, hence my nihilistic comment.

hmm... you must have skipped the entire series and saw EoE straight away. no wonder it'll look bad.

it's like seeing people eating coffee itself without water. you need the base structure and story line, or else it'll be all sour and yucky.

well, if you've seen it, too bad. just don't see it again, and become like... me. which isn't good at all, i can tell you.

I really don't mind a lot of anime, for instance, I enjoy Noir (granted I have only watched the first four disks and didn't know it had lesbo stuff in it), which seems to be against the general consensus. However there are a couple of animes I would definately recomend against, such as Ninja Scroll, and Ninja Ressurection (they are both sick and one shows a girl being raped to death).
depending on your convictions I would also caution you about Vampire Hunter D parts 1 and 2, I like them, but some people will find them offensive. I also echo the people who warn against episode 26 of Excell Saga, Puni-Puni-Peomi, Berzerk, and angel Sanctuary.

Hm... anime to avoid. Hmmm... :forehead:

Since I have a bad habit of just downloading any new stuff that I find on *sulks* IRC (yeah, I use that, sorry. ~_~) or Bittorrents, I come upon some of the most discusting stuff out there. I have a bad habit of not reading reviews and just jumping right in and downloading. :\

When I do download, I don't just curl up in my chair and watch from beginning to end. What I do is jump around in the episode I have and check and see if it's bad. If it is... well, lets just say that you can hardly read the word "delete" on my old delete key. :shady:

Here's my list:

- Najica: (I think that's how you spell it)
- Onegai Twins: (ugh... I shouldn't have started this. It's not THAT bad, but I would NOT recommend it. :shady: Since I saw Onegai Teacher [long story why], I wanted to check this out, and then they rope you in with an interesting story, then they start throwing in a bunch of what seems to slightly be like incest without it actually applying it :dizzy: <-- hope that made sense!)
- Mouse: ohmygoshem is this just horrid!!!!!!! So wrong!!!!

Eh... sorry for my brainfart... but I can't seem to think of anything else at the moment (I'm at work too, so it doesn't help ^^). I saw the start of this topic a while back -- about Full Metal Panic, it's great! Yeah, it has SOME shots that are a bit... ugh... but the story is great (and gotta love Sagara Sousuke! )... and the new season of it is just full of laughter!!!! :thumb: It's called "FMP?? Fumoffu!" Or something like that!

I need to write a meta-review about this, but if you're in a bookstore, pick up "The Anime Encyclopedia" (it has Astro Boy on the front). It's very comprehensive, has reasonably good plot summaries, and also marks series of, um, more prurient interest.

Note that incidental nudity, non-core-plot relationships (including ones we would consider inappropriate) and so on generally aren't flagged, but raunchy, porno or overtly sexual/offensive/exceptionally violent titles are.

I'll write a more thorough meta-review later, but it was worth the $24 to actually know what I was looking at in the shops.

When I wrote this I thought you were talking to me... That's where most of this comes from, but what I said is still what I want to say.

I saw all of the Evangelion TV series in subtitles. I then saw End of Evangelion with subtitles. I didn't see death and rebirth, but I heard that it was merely a recap of the show with the beginning of EOE. Even so, EOE is wrong. It is beyond disturbing from one end to the other.
From shinji, um, spilling his seed over Asukas comatose body to strangling her and the incestuous thing with rei and shinji as well as rei and shinjis dad. The happy (sorta) music they played while everyone was being killed... turned to lcl or whatever its called... the incredible change in personalities of several main characters... thats only a small list of what this thing is full of
I know some people who weren't bothered by it, and that is just beyond my comprehension. However, the people not bothered by it are a very small minority. Most people were disturbed by it in some way, even if they ended up liking it better (many times, only because of that fact)

Oh, and I know kids who have watched it (or teens who didn't understand many of the things going on) and because they missed some of the more disturbing aspects, they weren't bothered by it. However, it's not a risk I would want any of my friends to take... I don't want to show it to anyone and I don't want anyone I know to watch it.

Nia-chan, you sound a lot like me. I haven't really seen any *bad* anime, but i can reccomend some, and believe me, i'm super sensitive so i think these would be okay for you. Trigun is really good, a little fanservice in one ep but nothing horrendous (partial back side) . Gundam wing, if you don't mind Heero's dirt mouth. (bad heero!! i've seen wayyyyyyyyyyyyy worse tho) Saint tail! I don't think i can find anything wrong with this! It's really cute and clean. I highly reccomend both the anime and the manga! ;)
