What is your oppinion of this movie? I loved it although it is certainly not Miyazaki's best. Certainly easier for non-Anime fans to swallow than "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away".

I haven't seen it yet, though I've been meaning to. I've heard nothing but good things, though you can never really trust the critics anymore anyways... right?

I liked it. A couple of characters were kinda weird, but over all, I thought it was a very good movie. The voice of the girl was done by Anna Paquin (sp?), who played Rogue in X-Men the movie.

I found it interesting that Miyazaki once said that he believed "Caslte' would have been better if it had been an hour longer. That would have made the movie, uh, three hours.

I don't think that would have made for a better movie. While not my favorite Miyazaki work I found it entertaining.

I probably won't have been able to watch it another hour. I loved the movie - but I have a very short attention span when it comes to television. The plot was really interesting, and there were some cute parts. It did kinda bother me that there were slight implications against christianty at the end, though.

Not Miyazaki's best!? What are you talking about, Castle in the Sky was WAAY better than Mononoke or Spirited Away! I think those other two are really over-rated. And now I'm probably going to get blasted by all the Miyazaki fan-people

I didn't really like Princess Mononoke because of some of the "weird" stuff in it. It's been a long time since I've seen it though, so I'm in favor of Castle in the Sky. I don't remember any implications at the end though.

Yes, well, we are all entitled to our oppinions even if they are wrong. Expect the Spanish Inquisition to visit you tonight to force you to see the truth and then share your newfound love for Mononoke and Spirited with us. Just remember they'll be there when you least suspect it!

JUST KIDDING!!!  The whole above paragraph was a joke.

*(Gazes nervously at the moderators.)*

Seriously though, the weirdness factor of Mononoke and Spirited is a stumbling block for many. And Mononoke is a very complex piece of work so don't worry, we wont get all "inquisitiony" with you. In fact to a degree I agree with you, but my favourite Miyazaki would probably always remain "Castle of Cagliostro".

I liked Castle in the Sky. I also like extremely long movies, so I probably would've loved an extra hour in there. My favorite part is when they are at the castle (that's the castle on the ground).

Castle in the Sky was good but I feel it was a little slow in some parts. I haven't watched it in a while so I can't give any examples. Either way, I think it's worth a watch.

I don't think I would have minded the extra hour - I loved the movie. One of the early shows I saw that turned me on to anime.

It depends what the extra hour would have been filled with. Half of the movie (more or less) can be summed up as:

Pazu: SHEETA!
Sheeta: PAZU!
Pazu: SHEETA!
Sheeta: PAZU!
Pazu: SHEETA!
Sheeta: PAZU!
Pazu: SHEETA!
Sheeta: PAZU!
Pazu: SHEETA!

OK, I'm kidding (a little) - but they do scream each other's names a lot.

Spirited Away was very good, but many Americans unfamiliar with anime or Japanese culture won't get it, and Mononoke will go over the heads of younger audiences. Castle can be understood and enjoyed by all.

My personal favorite – for those who read this Miyazaki thread and no other – is Nausicaä. A master piece, even if Miyazaki himself doesn’t think so.
