Anime Withdrawal

I was wondering if there was any moment in your life where you've watched (or bought) way too much anime - Right up to the point when you finally decide to give it up for a couple of months?

Somehow I am in a situation where I buy a lot more than I can get of anime and manga. Like an addiction, it seems that I've seen way too much anime this year, and I probably need to give it a rest. Not to give up the hobby entirely, but maybe to go back to the things I used to do before becoming a fan...

Just wondering if anything like this has come up with any of you guys.

For me, I spend most (well, all) of my money on anime manga. The main reason is because I've felt guilty downloading so much, so wanna try and pay back as best I can with my favorite series.

Right now though, I've been withdrawling from anime. Been spending too much time with friends and it's great^^ Of course, anime can always be great toshow at our get togethers (depending on which one it is). Right now, I'm still watching a few various downloaded eps, as well as watching through my DVDs when bored.

Yeah I dunno... maybe it's only cause I've watched too much or because nothing new has really sparked my interest in a bit or maybe because I'm just plain too busy and gained a bit of a life!

I'm like the opposite, i can't get enough anime! when i finish a series i'm like that was really cool but, now i've got nothing to watch, until i get more. So i usually re-watch anime alot too.

I sort of know what you're feeling, Helios. This summer I discovered the wonderful yet dangerous world of ebay--I had gone all semester long without my job, focusing on my studies, so in the summer cash was flowing in again and things became far too tempting not to buy "for such a great deal!" So I ended up buying a great deal of memoribilla--posters (geesh, I have like, 11 of them I bought from ebay), figures, cards, cds, etc. etc. etc. Pretty worthless junk--fun junk to have, but worthless. I was still tithing regularly, but the Lord really hit me hard on my unwise spending habits, especially on someone who used to be so frugal!

It is a rough addiction to deal with, but the first step is just that: realizing what it is. An addiction. An idol. Your own personal god-with-a-little-g that you give your time, effort, enthusiasm and money too. Once you realize that, asking the Lord to forgive you and help you put Him back into the #1 spot is a little tougher, but it's definately doable. Our God is a wonderful, compassionate, caring, loving God who wants us to be close to Him if we would but ask for it.

I used to go throught withdrawal...
WHen I first got a job I was 16yrs old. With money coming in each week I would use that to buy anime. Now it became a problem when I got accepted into Texas State. Having to pay for school myself I could really afford purchasing anime every week. So i stopped buying for a while until I could afford it. Had some minor side effects such as: dizziness, nausea, constant anxiety... haha JK.

But it was a difficult thing. So now I buy anime every so often, when I can afford to. But like Ashley has stated, i think, that you just have to prioritize things. Some things are more important than anime, such as your relationship with God, your family and friends. It's okay to like anime but you just have to know what is more important in your life.

It's been my hobby of choice for several years now. My job has a good bit of stress and it's nice to be able to pop in a series with a good storyline or some good humor. It also is a bit nostalgic for me. Growing up in the mid 60s I watched a good bit of anime on TV. This is somewhat hard for a lot of people around me to understand so I'm not an in your face type of fan. It's pretty much something that I keep to myself. It's my personal indulgence. Not the priority of my life by any means, but for me a good source of leisure. As such I've not grown tired of it.

Oh yes, I can completly understand the "idol" status we give anime sometimes. One week I felt like God was telling me to sacrifice it for a week.

I'm still alive today. :-)

I think Ashley put it nicely.

As for myself, I've been almost altogether bored of anime for about the past year... and about 100% bored with anime for about the last few months... haha.

There's no good animes anymore. Every season it's just one crappy show after another. Even if there is a series or two worth watching, I wouldn't be interested anyways... I can't really explain it. I've just become flat-out bored with anime.

I used to love anime, and I would download even more than I could watch. I've even been into fansubbing for a little while now. In fact, I've still got obligations to my groups, there are things I should be working on... but they're making me work on stuff I absolutely hate, and I just can't bring myself to actually sit down for a few hours and get it over with. -_- I don't know what I'm going to do.

Rev.Doc, that pretty much is the way it is with me. People my own age never understand why I would watch anime, including my husband, but he puts up with it. He has his own hobbies, flying radio control airplanes - of which, I put up with happily.

I think as long its not your obsession, yes it's fine to have this as a hobby.

However, back on topic, Helios, I went through a period like that a few months back, where anime and manga just didn't interest me much. I do that with everything. You really can't get obsessed over anything too long, or it does become your little "g"od. I love it when I'm obsessing over studying the Word of God - that's a worthwhile obsession. ^__^

Like someone else mentioned, I am also the victim of the eBay addiction. Lately I purchased a bunch of those Volume 1 + Box deals that are out there. The trouble is, I worry that I have to fill those boxes up since I bought the box for THAT reason (which is to collect them all.) And so I have a lot of empty spaces in those sets, making me wonder, "Why the heck did I get the artbox if I can't afford to collect all the DVD's?" Probably I got a little carried away from those "irrational" purchases which is making me wonder if I'm starting to get obsessed. I love watching anime, but I can't stand the price you have to pay to collect them!

With that in mind, I'm sort of taking a break from all my purchases. It's tempting to collect everything that is out there, even as a hobbyist. But a hobby shouldn't be life's priority and I think the best thing for me is to lay-off buying anime for a while (as my budget definately needs some headroom! :) )

I have withdrawels not because I decide to have them. After watching the same anime tape over and over again (I'm very limited on the anime I own), you kind of get tired and give up...

like most of us here, you could probably classify me as "obsessed with anime." It is what I spend the majority of my extra money on, anyways, and I love reading manga, watching DVDs, and what not. However I can't really say there's been a time in my life where I've bought too much anime/manga.

^_^; I guess it's just a part of my personality. I set aside series that I know I'll want to read, and I strictly buy manga/DVDs from those series only. I never buy something just to "see what it's like," and I keep my DVD purchases to the very bare minimum - if I downloaded the fansub, then I buy the DVD (another good way to keep your downloading in check. XD). If not, then I try to watch it in an anime club, or rent it instead. The only time I let myself splurge on my anime addiction is at AnimeExpo, which comes around once a year. And again, I set myself budgets and make sure I don't spend more than what I have. I try not to let manga or anime get in the way of my writing, or eat into my study/quiet time (that's a job for a good RPG! XD; j/k...) It's all a matter of regulating yourself and excercising a good degree of self control. ^_^;

I blow too much of my money on other stuff to buy a lot of anime. So for that reason, I can't really relate. I'd like to start buying more anime, but I often end up spending all my money of videogames or hanging out at the mall or something.
