Ok, I was on Amazon this morning browsing DVD prices, when I found the 7 DVD Boxset of Last Exile (to be released Dec. 14, btw) for about $30. Then this afternoon I come back and the price is now $146.98! :wow!: I've never seen that happen before. :mutter: I COULD'VE GOTTEN A BOXSET FOR SUPER CHEAP!! :bang: AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!

Grrr...I just had to get that off my chest. Thank you for reading my rant.

ROFL yeah don't you just hate when that happens. Sometimes you can get lucky though and find a nice box set being sold by a total NewB who has no clue what to price it at, though once they find out how much its really worth BAM! the price goes way up :P

That's had to be wrong. There's no way that's right. Too bad that you didn't take advantage of that though.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I got the whole series of last exile for $30. It was a legit. copy from japan that was imported by my local anime shop :P The one downsid is that it has no dub and the sub is a bit sketchy. (Lavi is called Rafi at points)

I actually don't think that this copy is. This store orders through legal channels ( at leadt I think It does) they just buy It at japanese prices with american money. You can easily get bootleg copys of entire series for under five dolars in china. ( I have a friend who used to live there)

It is possible that this is bootleg but I don't think so.

That's cool. But I always find anime to be very expensive wherever I go. How come an anime DVD is like $30, when normal ones are about $18?

$30 sounds like a bootleg price to me, but it would be great to get it for that little.

The $30 price on anime has two factors. One is the cost of licensing the show from the Japanese rights holders and then translating and dubbing it into English and the second is the realativly low production runs for anime DVD's. As popular as anime has become, they still don't sell the volume that they do of big movies.

However, neither of these two factors accounts for the price nearly as much as the third and largest reason. Enough anime fans will pay $30 to make that price worth while. As long as the market will support $30 DVD's, we will pay $30.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a bootleg since Amazon was selling it directly, it wasn't from a marketplace dealer (or whatever those dealers are called). Anyway, I'm very tempted to just go ahead and buy it at the higher price. You know, just make it a gift to myself. Hard decision, I don't have a job right now so I have to be careful with my money.

-Cheap Price? Check.
-Sketchy subs? Check.

I bet it has Chinese subtitles too. More likely than not, it's a bootleg. You will NEVER find a real, legit Japanese anime dvd set for $30. A single DVD costs at least $30 dollars in Japan.

As for the topic creator, are you sure it just wasn't the 1st DVD + the boxset only? Someone would have to be nuts to sell it for $30. That's a pretty big loss. And if it was a used one, I would have been wary that it would have been a bootleg.

Edit: I found the box set and vol 7 and it does come out the same day as the box set.

I think they goof on putting the price for the full box set at $30. I think someone at Amazon most of thought it was just box with Vol 1. This has happen before, I know.

From what I understand about the Japanese market and the plummeting US dollar, that would make it more expensive, not less.

From these recent responses, I have come to the conclusion that I was probably initialy mistaken.

How much trouble do you think a store over here in america would get in if it was discovered to be selling bootleg?

They could be taking to court over it.

I heard that House of Anime store was being sue for selling bootlegs posters or something in that matter.

Even in Japan now, they are cracking down on DVD Piracy Bandai Entertainment has really started to crack down on DVD piracy and Intellectual Property Infringement.

From what I understand, once it gets through customs it's considered legal, but that doesn't make any less dubious. Also, Amazon is not above selling bootlegs. The first thing I ever bought online was a Cowboy Bebop set for $30 thinking it was legit, only to discover Chinese subtitles.

Depends. If it was selling licensed anime like Cowboy Bebop, Haibane Renmei, or Tenchi Muyo, a lot of trouble whether it got past customs or not.

If it wasn't licensed, aka Naruto, Bleach, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (or however it's spelled), they probably would not get into much trouble.

Hmm...I guess that means the Trigun DVD's and other anime I found for 30 bucks on Ebay are bootlegs then huh?

LOL. I just found out the entire Escaflowne series my sister got on Ebay is pirated! Oh no!
